I have had the same symptoms and many others. Went to 3 doctors, was diagnosed with GERD's and they gave me med's which I was to be on the rest of my life, but didn't work anyway. I was surpose to go back to GI dr. if these med's were not working, but decided to take things into my own hands and did lots of research and now am ultimately symptom free and feel great. I starting eating differently and I must admit it was very hard at first and took a long time, but I was determined. I learned a lot about nutrition..... you are what you eat. The book that helped me the most was Christine Pirello's Eating the Whole Foods way (read the intro!!) that and miso soup...... at my worst point I wasn't eating because I would rather not eat than be sick. But miso was the answer for me.... and it was all I ate for weeks.... little by little I introduced other foods and found out what "worked" and what didn't for that time. Basically you need to heal your gut. I can not tell you in this space all that I learned and it is different for each one of you. Please, do your own research, read everything, talk to nutritionist (free at my health store in Denver) and they always had lectures on digestive "stuff" (the lecture hall was always standing room only....tells me we are being fed unhealthy food... processed and meat from stressed animals, etc.) Speaking of stress, yes, stress is a MAJOR contributor to GERD's, but once you heal your gut, stress doesn't effect you as much, if at all.

People, People!! You all need to go see a speech language pathologist!! What you are describing is stress related. Everyone's bodies reacts differently to stress. In some cases, people carry their stress in their "voice box" a.k.a. vocal folds (clinical term). SLP's have a large scope of practice that many people do not know about. They will treat you!! They will give you breathing exercises, do laryngeal massage, ect.... My guess is that your voice has changed. Maybe not that you have noticed, but other people have. Is it more tired, feels like too much muscle effort, and not enough air getting through? Trust me, see an SLP, explain your symptoms, and they will know what to do.

I would recommend everybody with unexplained stress and a lump in throat sensation to petition their doctor very strongly for an overnight pulse oximetry, as these symptoms can be caused by sleep apnoea / apnea. Doctors are fixated on the idea that it only affects fat people but that simply isn't the case. The pulse oximetry is a very inexpensive, simple test that you can do in your own home.

If the oximetry shows any apneas at all (even less than 4 per hour, which is the number you need to be diagnosed with sleep apnoea), then try CPAP and see if it alleviates your symptoms.

This course of action would be especially recommended for anybody who wakes feeling stressed / unrefreshed, or who wakes in the night with any sensations of suffocating or choking.

I am not a doctor and this is no supplement for proper medical advice!

It's not a rare disease. It happens to a lot of people. You are just stressed out, clearly. Get your mind off of what is stressing you out, and the feeling of there being a lump in your throat, and it'll go away. When you keep your focus on it, you'll just make it worse. Just relax, once it's gone, get a glass of water, and you are good.

I am currently suffering from the same symptoms, as everyone else in this discussion board. After hours of research I have come upon an internet site which explains what LPR is. There is testing for this disorder and there is help to correct it. It is actually a physiological problem with the malfunctioning of the swallowing mechanism. It appears that a specific spasm occurs when you least suspect it. Be kind to yourself, and realize that you have all day to eat a meal, two sips of water at a time, deep breaths, relax. Find foods that you really enjoy eating and take your time. Getting upset makes the condition worse. There is hope, and recently doctors are finding ways to try and control this problem. Research LPR on the internet, do your homework, and find a good doctor at a good hospital. Help is available if you look hard enough. Sometimes a slightly thicker fluids are easier to handle when swallowing. Cut your proportion size in half and eat more often. Try relaxation methods to calm your nerves. Realize that tension escalates the problem. Distract yourself with a project or friends that are light hearted. Find a doctor that can prescribe some anti anxiety drugs that can reduce the panic and can relax the throat and neck muscles. Gentle swimming, relaxing bath, warm mist vaporizer. It is very hard to control choking symptoms, when that is part of our bodies natural reaction to things that don't work well. Mind over matter helps. Again, don't give up in locating a good professional.

I wonder if it has something to do with holding back tears, after experiencing a loss or tragedy. Crying or holding back tears had been the only other time for me, that I felt that sort of feeling.
