Not everyone responds the same way so just because "everyone" else can do it, it does not mean that you can do it. Some guys can't masturbate by "gripping" their penis and instead have to thrust into a pillow or something.
When you are told it may be "all in your head" it means that there is some reason, you may not even know what it is, that is holding you back. It could be anything. Trying "so hard to just do it" could be part of the problem. So, next time, relax. Don't try to "just do it." Just relax and enjoy the feelings.
