Iv had dry skin eczema all my life too im 30 now, my skin never breaks or bleeds but its just pure cry and i have like dandruff all over my body.. If i leave dark coloured items or clothing beside my bed at night when i wake in the morning its covered in a fine dust and even reaches shelves in my room as dust its rediculous.. My hands have always been very dry too the have always looked like old mans hands even when i was a kid... What i done was early in my life i just stopped using any creams, although they relieved it temporarly i found it to also get a bit worse after the cream had worn off and i dried up again, i mean i itch like mad after showering but it bad for about 30mins and then its gone although if u are sitting about not doing anythin it can feel worse so shower during the day instead of night time before bed.. After a while i just forgot all about it although i always knew it was there and it annoyed me at times to look at but i never covered it up, people actually in day to day life dont look at peoples skin and analyze it at least not the way you would think and especially the people u are friendly with would never judge you for it, they might notice once and then shortly after that its old forgotten news.. I can honestly say i have never came across anyone like friend or partner or even strangers that have passed any remarks about it.. As soon as you accept it fully and be as everyone else you know livin their day to day life and not covering up and just get on with your liife the worry and self conciousness about your dry skin will slowly fade and in the end you'l not give a sh*t about it i honestly mean that... Always remember people will not judge your situation the way your thinking they will thats all in the head.. I urge you to show it to your friends and embrace it and be strong at the start if anyone says anything bad about it like i say in time you'l not even think about it... A few tips here to help you from my experience and i think these are the best for myself personally.. Try to avoid showering every day i know u might not like it but i mean its ok to wash areas like your under arm between showers with a soapy cloth or something, NEVER rub your skin with a towel after a shower/bath never rub it dry as this breaks/flakes the skin again and when u dry i might not look as bad but the little flakes are smaller but ther is more than before only smaller, When showering or bathing never use really hot water i mean just have it comfortably warm not hot as this makes the skin even worse after drying.... Another thing i noticed like most of my life i never really drank pure water that much it was always Tea, Coffee or fizzy drinks, a few years ago i started drinkin pleany of water just to try and help my body a bit to feel good, i eventually liked drinkin the water freezing cold i was drinkin 2 - 3 pints throuhout the day and i soon realized my dry skin especially on my arms had improved more than ever i mean i just had a little below my ribs on my sides but my legs, arms, bottom, and my back.. I mean i was like 100% dry back to id say 95% dry it was great...... Until i stopped drinkin water a while back as i moved house and havent got my mums ice maker any more cus i only like ice cold water and now it has returned with a vengance... So im buying an ice maker soon and will start with the water drinking again.. So i hope my story helps you out please please dont be self concious and worried about it anymore and say to yourself that u dont want to be spending your time thinkin about this sh*t for the rest of your life and you'd rather be livin your life like everyone else, i guarantee you its easier showin it that hiding people will look upto you more in time... 1 No really hot water 2 Dont rub dry only pat/dab dry 3 Best relief for me plenty of WATER throughout the day... Hope this helps lol iv never typed to anyone this long Good Luck (",)

I've had horrible eczema when i was born, and thankfully it has gotten better but i have red spots on all of my upper body. No one makes fun of me but people always ask me why i have red spots all over my neck and shoulders and stare at it....especially when i do ballet where i wear a leotard :( Also I have wrinkles all over my forhead since i was born, does anyone know if this is because of eczema or something else? I've been using CeraVe for dryness and Vaseline for red spots and i use elidel and desonide when i break out a lot. I am 11 years old...hopefully my dermotologist is right, she says that it will get better when i am 15. Just try to ignore anyone who stares at your eczema or makes remarks about it, its hard but it will help you feel better about yourself!

Hi. I've had eczema on and off throughout my life. It stopped almost completely between when I was 18 and 27 . But has returned every now and again since then, I'm 29 now.

I've gone through the sweat /water turning into acid like sensations, the dust and blood stains in my sheets. The self consciousness, the itch, the smell, looking like I have elephant skin.. asking why me etc

I think every person has eczema for different reasons. It's all the same symptom. The dermatologists have no clue how to cure this. Steroids and anti corticoid medicine is poison. Just temporal relief, but it does not deal with the underlying problem. Contrary to what they say, I think it's possible to be cured, or make it manageable.

It's best to get tested for allergies. This includes what you eat as well. In my case, dogs, dust mites, excessive alcohol and exercise supplements cause my reactions. These days, once I get a reaction, it takes around two months for my skin to come back to normality. But if I avoid these, I don't get eczema. For some of you, there might be similar causes that you can easily avoid.

Things that help me when I get reactions. I fast 1 2 days on natural juice to let my gut rest. Then eat a lot of salmon and avocado. I take flaxseed oil, vitamin e and echinacea. These help with the dry skin.

I don't use creams before going to sleep to let my skin breathe, but I need it to work in the morning. Keep in mind that once it flares, and you scratch or if it dries, you will get bacteria or fungi infection, which delays the healing, so I like to use tea tree oil, and salt baths with my creams. For creams, I'm using a calendula extract cream mixed with salcura, and a few extra drops of tea tree oil, for the less affected parts I use to coconut cream from the bodyshop.

For the night, I take the drowsy antihistamine to help me sleep.

I moved to London too, I think places with dry weather do me no good.

I think in my case, my allergy /eczema must be linked to some sort of insulin resistance or thyroid gland problem, but this is just self diagnosed.

This is what works for me, I would not wish this illness to my worst enemy. If this works for you, or brings you relief then I'll be happy.

I have eczema too, i'm 16 and have had it kinda on and off for a few years but now it just won't go away. It's on my back (top), shoulders, arms, hips, one hand, and legs. I can't really afford to seek medical treatment and like one other response on this forum I have to completely cover my body all day at school (which looks ridiculous on hot days) and can not go out anywhere involving fun. As a result of this I sweat alot causing even more problems. It helps to know there are others out there (not saying it's good that you/they suffer though.) Does anyone know anything helpful for us?

IT MIGHT BE FUNGAL! i have had bad eczema since i moved to Vancouver,( damp rainy climate) but every summer it cleared up.BUT the last year and a half it was SO BAD! worse than ever, all over my body, i scartched like crazy, it was unnatural how itchy i was and it would get worse at night. I stopped sleeping because i COULDNT stop scatching!! I felt like a crawling sensation. my skin was so EXTREMELY DRY and FLAKY. I went to doctors and a dermatologist and they kept giving me creams and i even tried light therapy (which seemed to make it worse) THEN i developed a rash on my bottom (which i thought was eczema) turned out it was Fungal (yeast infection) i asked the dr if my all over skin problem could be related to yeast and he didnt give me a direct answer so once again i left the dr office disapointed. A few days later i went to the Philipines and saw a dermatologist there. and for the first time in a year and a half someone listened to me! She told me it might be Fungal. And for the first time someone took a skin sample (why did no doctor in Canada ever do this??!!) anyways turned out it was fungal, she gave me antifungal medication (pills) for 2 weeks and betaderm lotion to put on my body. In 3 DAYS my skin looked like porcelin, no excema, no itching, no dry skin!!! all my problems gone... if your eczema sounds like mine PLEASE ASK FOR A SKIN TEST its the only way to find out if its fungal i hope this helps somebody, the suffering i endured for a year and a half i wouldnt wish on anyone

What can I say my son has eczema since he was born and what a lot of doctors don't want to tell you is that it's due to a virus I don't know exactly what virus. but I do know that the herpes virus is very common and it doesn't display as exam that especially if you have that creepy crawly feeling is definitely herpes it's like a systemic herpes. the doctors are not going to say that because I don't want to put everybody in a panic but to see a herpes probably in your system and it's causing um breakouts. what is herpes? It is a skin infection. but don't panic to herpes vaccine is coming out very soon. so what do you do I do with this information? You have a systemic infection you need to use peer hydrogen peroxide food grade 35 percent put it in your water when you take a bath you fill up the water a person on in there maybe just a capital of ferries folded and you must not drink it is leathal. you can also bed with regular oatmeal from the grocery store. lotion your body with that's a and a and D ointment.

I have suffered for over 22 years with eczema and I've tried everything under the sun. I changed my diet dramatically and drink twice as much water as I use to drink. I started using Irish Eyes by Lorena a few months ago on my entire body and so far (knock on wood) no more breakouts or itching. I am not sure if it's the hemp they use in this stuff  or what, but my skin is also extremely soft and hydrated all day after I apply it. I have 8 patches all over my body and am praying my good fortune will last. Hope this helps for somebody.

I suddenly started with eczema a year ao. The moment when the medication is finished it flares up again. It is all over my body now. I did some research and found it is due to eating too much processed food, causing small pieces of fermented processed food caught up in the gut. This cuauses infllamation which somehow finds its way into the bloddstream. Long story short: we HAVE to eat extremely healthy! Buy Raw Apple cider vinegar from the health shop enad drink 1Tsp in a glass of water 3 times a day. AND drink fish oil twice a day (eat lots of tuna and salmon).. Eat healthy! No processed foods. I have started with it a week ago.

My four year old has had bad eczema for as long as I can remember. Ped and derms prescribed the same old creams an ointments. Nothing helped. I don't use soap I keep him moisturized. Aveeno didn't work for us although I hear many people say it does. His points were behind his knees, ankles, inner elbow, wrists and hands. I am posting this for those of you who are desperate and want to try something else. I have bought countless creams based on reviews and recommendations. Nothing. I tried restricting normal food allergy items like egg, wheat, etc. no change. I remember reading something about red dye but didnt pay attention. Then one day he was eating cake that had a red icing flower on it--where the icing got on his face, he broke out in hives. I google and quickly found information on red dye allergies. I eliminated it from his diet completely and after only two days-for the first time in years his eczema cleared up 100% in all areas except his hands. You wouldn't even know he ever had skin problems, it wasn't even rough or scaly. Since then, someone will occasionally give him something unknowingly (like ranch flavored chips, or chocolate pudding) that has red dye, and by the end of the day his "spots" are flared up. So if you are looking for relief, I would recommend eliminating red dye from your food for a couple of days and seeing if it helps (look for red40 or any other red in ingredients list). Sadly, still no answer for his hands.

Now aged 42, I have always suffered from acute atopic eczema all over my body. I was under Great Ormond Street at age 8 and have beeb to London specialists since - all to no avail. It had got to a manageable state but over a year ago now it became unbearable. I was covered head to toe in red rash, crumbling, flaking all over, as described by your other contributor. No amount of emoilents would soak in sufficentent to give relief. I have taken the usual oral steoroids and antihistamines but its all about making it as comfortable as I can.

I find showering at night best, sometimes in the morning as well and then applying liberal quantities of E45 cream, once skin is dry after shower and sitting in a towel for an hour or two. Then wiping off the oily residue with a squeezed out hot flannel before getting dressed. I have to repeat this in the morning as a ritual to see me through the day. I find betnovate to have limited affect when my skin gets into this state but you can try mixing it with E45 to get a better more even cover.  To give an idea of quantity of cream I use, I am getting through 1.5 to 2 x 500gm/ml tubbs of E45 per week.

I don't think the current flare up is dietary but stress related, work etc etc. Like everyone else I am at my wits end and again putting myself back on the oral steoroids for a short term relief!

Over the years I have tried all sorts of therapies all to no avail including the Chinese herbal remedies (there were some studies done in conjunction with Gt Ormond St years ago which showed isolated successes with some children). I have recently tried (over a four-five month period) the aloe vera gel which you consume in a liquid form (you need the concentrate liquid rather than the juice) - but anyway it didn't work, nedless to say!

Any other suggestions welcome!

Hey Vicki,

I stumbled across some dead sea mineral products, using salt from the dead sea. Since it's salt concentration is so high, these products are paraben free and it's hypoallergenic. Check it out, very natural and little to no chemicals.
