I have got a swollen uvula and it has become really long and is horrible and I can't sleep? Do you know if I will stop breathing during the night because it is choking me?

I would recommend the following:  drink some cold liquids to help reduce the swelling; you can also take some Ibuprofen- since pills may get stuck in your throat, you may want to swallow them with applesauce, pudding, or yogurt.  Make sure they are 200 mg tablets or capsules so that they are small enough to swallow without difficulty.  You can also buy ibuprofen in liquid form.  It is found in the children's section where the pain medications are.  If you can, try sleeping sitting up if you are worried that your throat may close up.  Get a doctor's appointment as soon as you can.

I woke up with the same issue this morning. My uvula is so long that I can exhale strongly and push the uvula to lay on my tongue. It even sounds crazy as I write this. If it starts to hang, it makes me gag. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked in the mirror this morning

Hello all.

A swollen uvula, or uvulitis, can be caused by various factors, including infections, allergies, dry mouth, dehydration, snoring, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Identifying the cause is important for appropriate treatment.

While you're waiting to see a doctor, there are some home remedies you can try to alleviate discomfort. Staying hydrated is essential; drink plenty of water to keep your throat moist. Gargling with salt water can also help; mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle to reduce swelling and soothe irritation. Avoid irritants such as smoking and alcohol, and consider using a humidifier to keep the air around you moist, which can help soothe an irritated throat and uvula.

Depending on the cause of the swelling, a doctor might prescribe treatments like antibiotics for a bacterial infection, steroids to reduce swelling, antihistamines for allergies, or other specific medications. To ease the sensation of choking while sleeping, try sleeping in an upright position, like propping up with pillows.

It's important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience significant difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening swelling, or trouble swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately. Even if symptoms begin to improve, a follow-up with a healthcare provider is essential to ensure the underlying cause is addressed and to prevent potential complications.
