This forum has helped immensely so far and have gained a lot of useful info so far. However, I have a specific problem, more related to the ‘’legal’’ aspect of carrying insulin than its medical counterpart. I will be leaving for a trip to Mexico soon and was wondering if I’m going to have problems crossing the border? Would they check my insulin? Do I need any documentation – bills? Doctor’s note?

How exciting to be going to Mexico!  I believe getting into Mexico shouldn't pose a problem but coming back to the States may.  I would get a document from the doctor and have all your bottles with the prescription labels on them in a plastic bag where the attendants at the airport can visibly see all of your diabetes supplies.  I cannot believe there would be much of a problem since so many people are diabetic compared to twenty years ago.  It is common place to see diabetic supplies anymore.  Have fun and be rest assured that you will pass through border control without any issues.

Insulin can be carried abroad since it is considered an essential drug. However, that does not mean you can walk freely acroos the border, since if anyone could just do it - well, you can imagine that trafficking would be much easier. Thus, you will not have any problems as long as

1) You keep insulin in the origianl package with label

2.) You have a statement from your doctor you are diabetic and are required to use insulin.

Make sure to comply with the laws of the country you will be visiting and if the law says you need to declare any medications - well do it.

Wish you a pleasant journey. Best, Tom.
