Something that I did was went on a liquid diet 24 hours before the surgery and have now just eating more solid foods.
You have to expect that these little guys are going to get somewhat angry when a band gets stuck on them. So take a few days relax and let the swelling go down.
I just would like to share my experience with others on this topic and possibly to give some advice as well. I had done this procedure 3 days ago on Friday late morning. I have 2 bands put on on my 2nd degree hemorrhoids. After the procedure I felt discomfort, tightness and pressure both on my lower abdomen and on my bowels as if I need a bowel movement. I took 2 500mg Paracetamol for the pain and after 24 hrs I put Ice on the place in the plastic bag. The ice numbed the area and the pain relief felt good. Also 2x a day in the morning and in the evening I took 1 sachets of Fybogel prescribed previously by the GP which helped me greatly. After 48 hrs I had only bearable pain that was gradually subsiding. I could do and continue with light housework and could go to work on Sunday - work in Retail so I have to walk a lot. No temperature I measured not even from the day one. I drank lots of water and eat small portions of light foods like lentils soup and wholemeal bread (Five Seed Batch - my favourite :). smoothies (strawberry + blueberry+ fresh mint leaves+ little lemon juice). On my day 3 one of my band fell off I caught it on the tissue I had a slight yellowish discharge in the morning then I saw the band. The other one is still there. Every time a slight blood can be seen after each bowel movement. Now I feel great back to my naughty self and my appetite has returned as well but I am still a bit cautious not to eat too much because then there is a great pressure on the intestines. I wish everybody a speedy, trouble free recovery. All in all it wasn't that bad this procedure but before I had a colonoscopy or a flexible sigmoidoscopy done which added to my pain degree and the bowel preparation from Monday ( diet without fibre) and on Thursday to take 2 sachets of laxatives the day before of the procedure on an already empty stomach was just awful. . Wish you all the very Best.
Had a banding performed last Wednesday and have experienced an unbearable amount of pain every since. I Am on Tramadol, oxycondonhydrochloride and paracetamol. Despite all these medications I am still in immense levels of pain. I have not had a bowel movement in 7 days despite being prescribed Movicol. The pain has gotten worse since the banding and when I returned to the hospital they discovered that in the process of banding me they had also given me an anal fissure, for which I have no been prescribed diltiazim. Other than this the hospital seemed wholly unconcerned. I am at my wits end. The pain cuts through the pain killers all the time and i am in so much pain i can not sleep for more than a few hours before waking up.
I had a banding 8 days ago together with one skin tag removal. The skin tag was not stitched but left open as my doctor says it heals naturally and avoids possible infections.
Being prescribed with Dicoflenac & Co-Dydramol for both anti-inflamatory & pain killer, I thought I would not need them by now. My supply from the hospital ran out yesterday and I was already advised that I should contact my GP for further supplies if needed. Well, they are definitely still needed. The pain has died down but after a toilet visit, I am almost incapacitated for a while.
Thinking I would recover sooner, I took my daughter to a craft fair 3 days after my operation but had to go to the loo whilst there and thought I would not be able to walk back to find her afterwards. The ain died down after an hour or so and I was able to drive home, though in hind-sight being on pain killers, I propably shouldn't have gone.
I was given a paper from the hospital about banding and it says it is fine to go back to work the following day after treatment - this is absolute rubbish! If I pass a stool, I am out of action for at least an hour and in pain for around 2-3 hours following.
The nurses said there would be no pain the following day, so lots of conflicting information and I think we are all different and feel different pain thresholds as well as have different surgeons and conditions. We may all take different amounts of time to recover and as I have never needed any hospital treatments or operations in my 46 years to date, maybe I am hyper-sensitive but I am in pain.
I took a mirror and had a look at my bottom and it looks "normal" again, so no signs on lumps or bumps. I found that baby powder after an evening bath or morning shower was a good move. As there is slight bleeding or leaking, the bottom can get sore and baby powder kept me dry. I was also using baby wipes frequently, especially after passing a stool due to stinging either from the open cut from the skin tag removal or as someone mentioned in a previous message, it could be from a discharge that I cannot see.
I started taking prunes yesterday and it gave me soft stools by the afternoon but be careful not to take too many at once, I had to go three times and it was painful every time.
When I got up this morning, I thought I would not need to take the pain killers any more, I felt really good but then I went to the toilet and was almost in tears, I could hardly stand afterwards and it took me a while to get down the stairs to rush for the pain killers. One hour later I was fine and the pain goes for the rest of the day or at least until i need to pass wind (yes that hurts too) or poo.
Without checking these messages, I thought I may have to call my doctor as it has been over a week but it seems that 2-3 weeks is probably more likely before I can say I will have recovered. Luckily this is the Christmas perios and I am off work, otherwise I would be asking my GP for sick notes.
My partner had two internal and one external hemorroid banded today about 3pm and is in severe agony - cramps, bleeding, feels like he needs to go to the toilet - when he doesn't. Only thing that has helped him was having a bath. Am really worried about him because of other medcal problems he has. Is there anything i can do other than give him ibruprofen tablets?
My pain went away about 2 weeks after my last post (above) although there was a slight bleeding about a week ago, it is expected to be the case as the banding probaly dislodged and went down the loo without me knowing.
Speak to your GP, mine called me at home to see that the pain killers were right for me. They can be changed if not srtrong enough and I would say ibuproven is no where near strong enough.
What did the hospital give you? Call them up and if something has gone wrong - get an ambulance to take him back. He may not feel up to it and I suppose it depends where in the country/world you are, that an on-call doctor could come out to your house if you are worried - good luck.
Thanks for your reply. Spoke to NHS 24 last night and they said to go back to A&E. We didn't - he just wanted to go to sleep. He's awake now and feeling a bit better - still a bit of blood this morning, but he's as sarcastic as ever so he's getting back to health!
Good I did not read these stories before my procedure (yesterday)..... I had 2 removed yesterday and experience the same symptoms as described by some others (constant urge for bowel movements and slight abdominal pain). If this is it and if by tomorrow the worst is over, the decision to go for it was still the best ever! I had them for 7 years after the birth of my second daughter and on and off they were causing me daily trouble = always on my mind. I really hope I do not need to live that experience again.
I maybe wish my doctor would have been a bit more specific about the post-procedure pains.
i had my haemorroids banded yesterday via flexible sigmoidscopy omg the pain have same symptoms as you v sore good bit blood too
Wow! I'm sorry folks on this thread had so much discomfort from banding. My experiences were quite different, but I understand everyone's situation and recovery is different. Over the past 10 years, I've had the banding procedure 3 times. One procedure left with me with a dull ache for about a day, but I don't recall anything that I would call pain. My doctor kept writing pain med prescriptions each time, but I never filled them and used Ibuprofen instead. Don't think I ever missed work because of them, other than taking the afternoon off after each procedure. The banded 'roid always fell off within a week, and I remember some light bleeding that stopped soon after.
The banding procedures cleared up my issues at the time, but my 'roids kept coming back, and now I've a recovering hemorrhoidectomy patient. Been a week since my surgery, and I'm getting better every day. Looking forward to be rid of hemorrhoids for good!
I begun having rectal bleeding about 4.5 years ago when having a bowel movement. I had a sigmoidoscopy and it was found that I have internal hemmroids. I saw the Dr finally today as the bleeding has continued on and off all this time, this last bout was everyday for over a month. The dr told me I will have to have banding done. Question...do they put you under for the procedure? And how much if any time off work do you need?
thanks!
I am supposed to be getting this procedure done as well. As with a poster above, I am curious if they put you under any sedation for it? Thanks.
yes, general anesthetic. I am now having a "Halo-Treatment" much better and more logical.
Cuts off supply to blood vessels. Banding was a cheap alternative that didn't work. Now costing to try again. Luckily this is funded on NHS in UK.
Just had 2 large hemorrhoids banded today (12 hours ago), under general anesthetic along with polyp removal and colonoscopy. While I'm feeling pressure, fullness in the rectum and slight discomfort, the pain is not severe as i thought it might be. I have been prescribed heavy duty pain killers "just in case" but so far, have not needed them. I was not game to pass wind at all until just a few hours ago, but it was all ok. There are plenty of people with bad experiences but so far, my experience is quite bearable, and I know the ensuing result will be worth it. If you suffer with the pain of hemorrhoids, I recommend this treatment. :)
