I am not really allergic, but more oversensitive. This is a recent thing too. My sophomore year of high school I had a nasty cough, and being in theatre, I needed to shut it up while back stage during performances. I took 60 mg of DM cough medicine and thought nothing of it (i had taken it for years), but half way into our show I blacked out (talk about some serious improv for the other actors lol). I don't remember a thing but I woke up at the hospital and the doctor said I was oversensitive to the main drug in cough suppressants.
I thought I was the only one too, until I did some research (now) as a freshman in college battling her first cold.
I've been allergic to it since I was a kid when they first started putting it in cough medicine in the 60's. Makes for a tough cold season. Took a while to figure out the link between getting the severe hives and the cough medicine. Fortunately I don't get the internal kind where your throat swells up, but I sure looked terrible on the outside and can't stand the itching all over. Benadryl helps reduce the reaction. My early cases were so bad my childhood doctor said he was going to write me up in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Same here......Feel numb and weird....Dizzy. The first time this happend I threw up....now I am going on the second time and just feel really numb....like if i was stoned .....but in a bed way
Yes I use to take Delsym and thought it worked well. However, I took it from an open bottle while sick and got stomach pain, dizzy, diahrea and the shakes. I felt like I was poisened. Once it passed thru me I felt much better. Since I had taken it many times before I tried it again this time from a new bottle. Same reaction. Next time I'm sick I don't know what I can take. Any ideas?
Im taking Azilect so I've been told by my doctor not to take any medication with DXM. The problem I have is when I do get a cold I contact my movement disorder doctor which refers me to my primary care doctor. My primary care wants to send me to movement disorder dr which I can understand Parkinson is a disease. It seems to me that even the doctors don't know what meds to prescribe with Azilect. This morning called my movement disorder dr I have a sore throat, head cold with coughing with mucous I asked for something over the counter or a prescription again my doctor referred me to my primary then tells me I should see a nose throat ear dr. I do not know what cough cold medicine I can take with Azilect.
I took Buckley's this morning and I am not sure what caused my reaction in it but probably not the DM because I took two pills (Benylin)last night that had DM in them
I reacted within minutes after the Buckley's and with no one home I phoned 911
I broke out and severe hives but my throat and tongue were okay and by the time the ambulance arrived at my home I had passed out... spent seven hours at the hospital and they released me without really knowing what happened
I thought I was the only odd one. I took 2 tsp and ended up in emergency room covered with hives and they were in my lungs. Shot up with steroid and Benadryl.
All I can take is night time cold meds, like nighttime TheraFlu, with diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in it. Other options during day time would be a decongestant and/or expectorant (Mucinex) and an antihistamine that won't make you as drowsy as Benadryl.
Happened once before, same spots. Itches like hell and then peels like a sunburn. No more DM products for me.
