I have read many post. Every time I take this stuff I become physically weak. I take other stimulants Sudafed raw guarana and they have no effect as far as the side effects. I just find this weird that members of this thread aren't having the same side effects as me. I tolerate alcohol very well too

I feel lucky after reading all the things this drug can cause, I get itchy red blotches on my hands and they feel like they are sunburned and will peel. This is the third time I have taken a DIFFERENT cough medicine and it happened again. I finally decided to look for the common element in all three and there it was. Little slow on the draw but now I know. This post helped.

I too am allergic. But then I am allergic to oppiods (sp), codine morphine. This makes it hard to fine meds without DM in them seeing as most over the counter meds have it in them. Not only do I itch but it makes feel like my body is having a panic attack.

This also makes it hard when sending people out for a cold relief meds when you're unable to get it yourself; they inevitably come back with stuff you can't take or have no idea what to look for.

I wind up drinking a lot of teas, eating lots of soup and "steam baths". There is not a lot of meds put there that no longer have this ingredient in it, with bites.

Same. Every single time.

I want to thank OP griffie38331 ,  for making this thread. You helped me so much . I always get a common cold but I suffer so much during it. I had no idea I was allergic to it. I have what they call, fixed drug eruption. It causes my eyes, lips, toes , back to swell up with a certain drug. I had this for over 10 years and thought I just get a common cold really bad.

I couldn't figure it out until I made a few google searches. The doctors with my help and this thread correctly diagnose me.

I took Nyquil three years ago and about 45 minutes later my eyes started to itch and swell kinda felt like it was from behind and my ears and my scalp started to itch, I took Benadryl and thought maybe it was the combination medication. I took the cough medicine by itself about a year later and the same thing happened so I thought maybe its the red dye, but two days ago I took a different clear cough medicine and the same thing happened so I am convinced that I am allergic to Dextromethorphan. its a scary feeling because it seems that each time I have a reaction it gets worse. I took Benadryl and will never take that med again, I am going to the doctor today and will have it noted in my medical records and also ask for an alternative med for cough.

I am also allergic but my symptoms seem to change with dose amounts & over time have been different. I had my 1st issue in college, around 2001ish. Very lethargic & slept a lot. Felt very gross & out of it. Tried to stay away but took an OTC without realizing it was in there the 2nd time. But that time i had trouble with breathing. No swelling, but almost a light hyperventilating as well as the lethargy. Thats what prompted me to check the label. The 3rd unfortunate time, my mom (an nurse & emt in her hey day) accidentally gave me the wrong one. She was supposed to grab me codeine & grabbed the wrong one. That time i had trouble swallowing. Not breathing, just swallowing. Like i had novocaine at the dentist but just in my throat. Again, the reaction is what prompted me to double check. Its weird. Apparently my body is weird. Anyone else have this issue? I dint have anything else im majorly allergic to so i have literally nothing else to base this on

Does anyone know of a cough medicine for children that does not contain dextromethorphan?

I can't take any medication with dextromethorphan in it, so does anyone know of any cold medicine without it? I'm extremely sick.

It was in the pill I took, then I struggled, had chest pains, and trouble breathing. I t wore off after I couldn't move for 6 hours, but didn't know what it was. Then I tried 1/4 dose of liquid cough medicine, and immediately struggled to breath. I called 911 but couldn't talk. They got me to the hospital for lots of emergency care. I though I was a goner. I read it can have something to do with your enzyme that metabolizes Dex......

I’m am allergic to it too, like many other OTC cold medicines now I used to be able to take. I did discover that the preservatives they use in almost all meds now are in fact antibiotics, in which I am extremely allergic. I can’t even have a flu shot due to the use of antibiotics being used as a preservative. I feel like the compounds formulas have changed every since we offshored almost all of our meds production to China. Now the only I can do is suffer until the cold or virus goes away.

I feel as though I am allergic to destromethorphan. I get a horrible, painful, burning rash on my face (purple, scabby) and blisters on my hands. I would get cold sores and canker sores also.
Every time I get this "flare-up" it is worse than the one before. A dermatologist seems to think I'm mistaken but it has happened the last two times I took NyQuil and this time with Alka Seltzer cold tablets. I've gotten the flare-up before from the sun or stress but it seems the medication is a definite.
Thank you for those who posted on this forum because I feel as though I may not be crazy.
