The areolas of my left lower breast is very itchy. The other parts are very not. At times there are dead skin that flakes off. Its like dried skin coming off. At times the whole areola and the nipple is itchy and I get relieved when I put creme or lotion on it. The other parts of my left areola looks very good, but the part that itches looks darker. Just alittle above are two red spots (one is on a higher locaton) which gets very very red when it is itchy.
Im very concerned cause I read somewhere that Paget's Disease of the breast has this symptoms (itchiness & flaking skins) and I want to know more about this. Can someone tell me?
You should know that the symptoms you described also resemble symptoms of dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis all being skin disorders and disease that have nothing to do with a tumor. You should also know that Padget’s disease is very rare.
Apart from these conditions, you could be suffering from mastitis. It is a bacterial inflammation of the breast/ducts that may cause similar symptoms.
To get a proper treatment, you need to find a cause. If there’s no discharge from the breast, it would say it sounds more like one of these skin disease but you can’t know for sure without proper examination and maybe even a biopsy if necessary.
It would be best if you saw a doctor! I hope you sort it out soon!
I wondered how you resolved this as this is what I have had .. it started several weeks ago about the time my daughter gave birth to my 2nd grandchild .. and I thought how weird that I was having an itchy aereola at the same time she was suffering with sore nipples from early breast feeding days and had been told to pick off the blisters by her health visitor/midwife. It itched so much it nearly drove me doo lally I have to say.. each night I would check to see what was there and there was nothing visible yet it still itched. Then one morning I noticed that there was a small pimple on the edge of the aereola .. the nipple was fine, looked healthy etc.. (we women worry a lot about our breasts .. or rather we don't until we see or feel something) .. and I thought okay its a pimple but what a funny place to get one.. but it felt just like the times I get one on my chin (am 59 now) and been having random breakouts like most females since puberty.. one or two only though now years apart. I did not squeeze it, just left it alone but noticed that night in my bra was a crusty debris and realised that at some point during the day, it had leaked out a creamy discharge and had dried in my bra. I hoped it would clear up but it still itched like crazy. A scab formed eventually and the itching continued but seemed relieved slightly by putting on a litle petroleum jelly with almond oil in it or Germolene (antiseptic cream) and if I kept busy I could forget about the itchy feeling.. sometimes though it did get the better of me and I suspect one night in bed I must have unknowingly scratched it as the next morning the scab had gone and it looked red and angry and it still itched!!!! arrrrgh. I looked it up on the internet as you do and most cases for itchy nipples were hormone changes.. so I thought okay daughter giving birth etc.. yes conceivable our bodies were tuning in to each other as I did this with my 1st grandbaby too. I watched and waited and kept putting the antiseptic cream on every night and every morning and it seemed to settle down. Then I noticed last night when I took my bra off that there was a dried crusty crumb stuck to my bra.. and it had been clearly discharging this yellowy creamy stuff again and now the area is larger than it was and is very red but not as itchy.. but just a few moments ago I had a few sharpish pains around the area internally which reminded me to look it up again and I found this website and read various posts here appertaining to the same or similar.Whether this is anything to do with the fact too that I have a 'lump' in that same breast which has been checked twice now with mamogram and ultra sound and although the doctors can't actually see the lump they both were able to palpate it. I asked was it a cyst and was told no .. yet no one could really say for sure what it was but they said they did not feel it was anything sinister. I had it checked again as a recall last February and again yes they could feel it there by hand but not detected on x ray or ultra sound. I am somewhat puzzled by all this. I rang my doc today and there was not a doctor free to see me but they are going to talk to me on the phone to see if they can offer some advice on what it may be and how I can treat it.
Having read lots of posts here I am sure its nothing serious but it sounds as though it may be something hormone related and that it could recur at any time just as randomly as it arrived, it may go....or maybe not. I have a plaster (band aid) on it today to have a dressing between it and my bra and that does feel more comfortable I must admit. Ho hum............. I will post again if Doctor advises anything that I think others may benefit from knowing. :-)
PS I have spoken to my GP today but he wants to see me on Monday.. I could not get there today but they would have fitted me in. He gave me the option of seeing a female colleague if I prefer too.
