I'm speaking from my own personal experiences; I am not medically trained in any form. I've suffered from yeast infections since I was a teenager. It has gotten severe a few times. The first time I went to an OBGYN about it he didn't find anything wrong so I continued for years to have the same symptoms which came and went. Eventually I got into drugs which made everything worse. I wasn't an addict, but I was partying too hard on a few occasions. This lead to my immune system becoming virtually nonexistent. I'm not exaggerating when I say my discharge was so acidic it caused my skin to fall off. I didn't have health insurance and I was too embarrassed to go to the doctor. I knew I didn't have an std because I wasn't sexually active at the time. I ended up getting 2 Monistat 1 day treatments which I did back to back in 2 days. It comes with a cream to use on your vulva which I used for the wounds on my vagina. I also bought Gold Bond extra strength powder which is in a green bottle for itching relief. It took a while, but I eventually healed. The second time wasn't as terrible, but I ended up drinking too much and again my immune system depleted so the cuts returned. Not as bad discharge and the cuts were more like paper cuts this time, but still painful and uncomfortable. I repeated the process just not as extreme. Diet has a lot to do with these types of issues. Having a poor diet consisting of unnatural sugars, white flour, white rice, and processed foods in general is also a major factor in recurring infections. I try my best to maintain a healthy diet, but it's hard for me since I love all the things I listed above so I keep dealing with minor infections. I've been on the newest one for a couple months now so hopefully I keep to it. I do feel great!

What you have I think is slightly different.
I notice skin peels around the vagina after shaving and if you don't shave it rarely ever occurs.

Most women never think of it because it mainly affects men. Similar to a yeast infection, but YI treatments wont really help it.
Salt water bath, then try a jock itch treatment designed for use on private areas. Im excited to kow if this helps anyone because Ive had this and it's awful.

I've found this happens to me whenever I, er, drink too much alcohol and not enough water over several days (i.e., I get dehydrated for several days in a row). It usually lasts for at least a week (usually two or more), but goes away after about a week (or two) of consistently re-hydrating myself (i.e., cutting back on the booze and drinking water religiously). My symptoms are always: (1) dry (pasty) labia; (2) strong onion smell; (3) peeling skin inside vagina and over the labia and clitoris (peeling/flaking like sunburned skin with lotion on it, or like the bottom of your foot sometimes after a long bath); (4) itching and, eventually, redness and burning (as a result of scratching or rubbing in response to the itching); and, eventually, (5) random bursts of very watery discharge (usually only after the first week).
It all comes down to being dehydrated. You know how your lips split or tear in winter when they're extremely dry and you try to smile? I think that's whats causing the pain/burning and itching (itching is really just a minor form of pain) -- your vagina and labia need to be moist at all times to be healthy, and when they're not, you can get hundreds of micro-tears across them which cause them to itch and burn. The lack of moisture also interferes with your body's ability to flush away the usual layer of dead skin cells (as well as making more of them die from dehydration), so that could explain the peeling/flaking skin. Finally, the lack of proper hydration is going to affect your PH down there, changing the smell.
