Im dying from the smell!!!! I often catch my boyfriend frowning from the smell during sex. COMPLETE TURN OFF! I have had Mirena for almost 5 yrs. I have had at least 8 (BV). One time i went to the doctor and she couldnt find my strings, I had to go get a xray done and come to find out, the strings were there but they were covered with so much yeast that they were not visible. GROSS. Mirena is ruining my life. I have asked my doctor numerous amounts of time about removal and she always come up with some excuse to remind me of why I should keep it, and i always fall for it b/c another child is not for me right now. But this thing has to go. My removal date is January 2013, I cant wait.

I had an IUD inserted about 4-5 years ago. It was great for the first 2 years and I had no problems. The thought of not having to worry about birth control was awesome. My husband and I have an active sex life. We have 2 kids. About the 3rd year with the IUD, I had a severe UTI that the urgent care dr thought it might have affected my kidneys. I was put on antibiotics but my symptoms continued. Burning, itching, irritation, pain with sex. The constant urge to urinate. I say the urgent care dr, my pcp and finally a urologist. They all insisted the IUD was not responsible. I tried OTC yeast infection meds, antibiotics, pills even a med for frequent and painful urination. I finally had it removed after hearing time and time again that it wasn't the IUD. The pressure, burning, irritation, pain is gone. I started on diflucan and now the rest of the symptoms like itching is gone. Now the urge to urinate is finally gone:) I will never use an IUD again!!!

Hey everyone! It is very reassuring to know that i was not alone...I have had this mirena since 08 its 2012 and its been giving me BV for over a year now but my doc always told me that it was not doing that. Im glad to see that I was right, we as women know our body better than anyone else so we have to make the decision to take care of it! Thanks again for being so open about this topic, it was very informative and im taking mine out ASAP!

I'm having the exact same problem. My Mirena was inserted only 6 months ago and since then I've had multiple infections. Recently I had an abdomen exam and an ultrasound. My doctor insures me that this is not a result of the Mirena. I am going absolutely insane with all these infections!

So glad you posted this. I have had similar symptoms as well. I have been really discusted by them and I am very glad im not the only one. Ive went in and been checked a few times and keep getting these yeast infections and I do believe at times the BV as well. The Mirena seemed like a really good choice but I think it may be time for it to go.

Hey for all of you that have gotten the BV. Also have your partner get checked and treated, They say men can't carry it but my husband  had to get treated for it shorty after I had my mirena put in. My BV kept coming back because we were passing it back and forth. Mirena incresases you chances of BV and yeast infections because it is a forgien object and it upsets your PH. This maybe the reason you continue to get it. Even if you are relucent to have your husband go to the doctor for this problem trust me it has made a huge difference. Since we have both gone and gotten treatment for BV we have no problems and that was over 3 years ago. ANd I still have my Mirena in

I just had my IUD removed today 10/08/12. I finally had enough of this drama. This IUD was the second one I had after the birth of my daughter 2.5 yrs ago. With my first IUD I experienced a few bacterial infections and a few extra yeast infections, but the second time around I was noticing I was getting a bacterial infection almost every other month and a yeast infection monthly. This had made my sex life with my husband miserable. The doctor reluctantly took it out. Too bad I need to figure out if this is causing the problem. I was told by another obgyn that because I didnt get a regular period that could be causing the problem. Getting a regular period is a way for the vagina to natural cleanse itself. It makes sense. It cant natural cleanse if its plugged up. Although I'm not excited about getting a regular period, I would rather that than constantly have bv and yeast.

I had changed to dove unscented years ago and even use unscented laundry detergent, which is better. The second IUD around I noticed that things were getting worse even though I was following doctors orders. I have to say since having the IUD removed on Monday, I'm feeling great. I had a bacterial infection again so I am being treated and I'm excited for the change. I also decided to contact my pharmacy and track how many times i was put on meds for bv and yeast.

I have had the exact same problem as you Ity_patt and i totally agree. I had my last one in for 3 years without any problems and then all of a sudden i started having all these problems , had either urine infection or BV constant for 5 months it was embarrassing/uncomfortable and i couldnt handle it anymore. I went to the GP and spoke to someone who deals with the coil and asked if this was caused by the IUD they told me it could be and the bacteria could be stuck to the strings of the IUD which keeps causing reoccuring infections. The reason i got the coil was i have endometriosis and by this point the coil had stopped doing what it was suppose to do go so my GP had suggested that i have it changed and see how i get on even though i wasnt so keen on the idea but she talked me round. Since having it changed i have had no infections (yet) but the first sign of any symptoms and i will be straight back there and asking for it to be removed.

However since having the 2nd one fitted i have had to wear panty liners because of the discharge, its yellow/green colour and it is constant. I was told this was normal and should ease down but this is now the 3rd month. Has anyone else experienced this problem and can give any advice?

I have had the mirena for 2 years and three months.  I can say that I have had BV a few times before I got the IUD, but I have never in my life had a yeast infection, not even when I was prenant.  I used to get horrible bladder infections about 8 years ago because I was partying a lot.  Ever since I got my mirena, I have had a yeast infection every other month, and BV almost as many times.  Then, today, I woke up to, by far, the worst bladder infection I have ever had in my entire life.  I was peeing blood.  Today is the first time I asked my doctor if the mirena causes all these problems, and she said no.  But after reading all of this, I am seriously considering removing this God forsaken thing.

I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND I HAVE HAD MY IUD FOR 4 YEARS AND IT ALL STARTED THE 2ND YEAR BUT IT WAS LIKE 4 TIMES OUT OF THE YEAR AND THE SAME FOR THE 3RD YEAR BUT THIS 4TH YEAR HAS BEEN HORRIBLE AND I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE. I HAVE MADE MY APPT TO GET IT REMOVED. I RATHER BE PREGNANT THAN HAVE THIS BAD ODOR ON ME. I AM VERY CLEAN AND NEAT AND THIS BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. I DRINK PLENTY OF CRANBERRY JUICE AND NOTHING GOES AWAY. I TAKE PILLS AND EVERYTHING AND NOTHING HAPPENS SO I KNOW OW YOU FEEL AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.

I am 23 and have been experiencing the same problem since I have had Mirena placed. I have had no yeast infections but am now on my second round of bacterial vaginosis. When I weant to my GYNO, I told her I thought I had BV and she said the smell may just be "old blood". I laughed when she took a sample and low and behold I was right. I have done research on this happening to women. My advice: If you have had Mirena placed and start to experience symptoms of BV get it removed!
