I drink a lot and it happens randomly for me. I found this answer and the web and think it is the closest answer to what I imagine most people in this thread are experiencing:

The phenomenon is called first bite syndrome.

How it happens?

It's from your salivary glands pushing out a large volume of saliva when you first bite into some types of foods. The large amount of saliva being excreted causes pressure in the salivary ducts which you experience as pain. Your major salivary ducts are located below your tongue and in the cheek next to your top molars. It's pretty common. Completely harmless. It should improve as you continue to eat your food

I just had a glass of cognac which i don't drink often (once every 2 years?) so my pain is usually triggered with beer or wine but i just wanted to share it might not be just beer and wine but prob. All alcohol

I've had this problem for many years and have googled it at various times. I usually get the pain, like others, when drinking alcohol. Generally just wine coolers or other sweet alcoholic beverages. I don't drink beer, so I can't comment on that. I did, however, just eat a plain peanut butter sandwich on soft white bread because my stomach has been sour all morning. I'm having intense pain right now. It's never happened after eating. I'm drinking a diet coke, nothing alcoholic. I hope I don't start getting the pain after eating as well. It's so frustrating.

Every time this happens and I try to describe it, people look at me like I'm saying the weirdest thing in the world, so I couldn't be happier to hear that this is an actual thing and not just me!

From what I've read online, there can be different reasons for that. I think mine is related to a mild case of "temporomadibular joint dysfunction" because, in addition to the painful tingling sensation I sometimes get when drinking alcohol, I have always noticed some pain and popping in my jaw when I try to open my mouth a bit more than I usually would for talking/eating.

The tingling with alcohol doesn't always happen, and there may be long periods when it doesn't with any type of drinks. Particularly, it seems to happen if it's been a while since my last drink, with sweet cocktails (but not always), or when I drink alcohol and then drink something else, like water - that seems to trigger it. It usually goes away after 20-30 minutes, but it's so uncomfortable!

I read somewhere that massaging the area and/or applying a warm cloth can help when it happens, so I'll try that next time this happens.

I am the same way. I tell family members about it a d they look at me I'm crazy it's always when I drink beer. And only beer causes this I suppose other alcohol might have but I just don't remember it. I just had this occurred to me now which is why I search for it I was drinking Coors Light after I had some nuts. And it hurt bad real bad still hurts right now it's been 30 minutes. I think this guy is right that has something to do with what you eat prior to drinking the beer. Or with the beer.

Same thing happens to me and I am allergic to sulfa

This happens to me, too, but not all the time. It seems like wine and liquor are worse than beer, but sometimes beer does it, too. I can't figure an rhyme or reason to when it happens, but it is excruciating when it does.

I have had this problem for many years. In the past, I'd found that drinking water would slowly lessen the pain. Recently, I discovered that eating sharp cheese gets the pain to disappear almost instantly. Has anyone else ever tried that?
