I was looking into this thread because I've been experiencing the same symptoms and I too am allergic to sulfa drugs! Thank you for this enlightening information!

I came to look up why this is a thing with me and saw your post. I am allergic to sulfa drugs, and some (Not All) alcohol causes this pain. Now I need to experiment and try high vs low sulfite drinks. For science.

This happens to me a lot and there's no predicting when it will occur. I can go for weeks or months without a problem, and then I will have the severe tingling (tingling really isn't even the right word but I cannot figure out how else to describe it) randomly. I am allergic to Sulfa's antibiotics and I've read a lot about this topic and it appears that it is a sulfite issue and, in some cases, a yeast issue within the alcohol. I'd never linked the sulfa allergy to it, but that makes a lot of sense!

Is this a sign the wine isn't good? Because I've had the same problem time and again, more with Rose and Reds. The pain last time was really bad. Chewed a pillow peppermint candy and it seemed to relieve the pain, close to 10 mins. But then I could feel it rebounding. No more peppermint! Almost had my husband take me to the hospital.

THANK YOU!!! after a few years of googling this issue, i finally came across your reply and it makes so much sense. bummer that there is nothing that can be done to prevent it. the pain is very intense for me and does feel like the tissue in my jaw is being "digested."

I like not your father's root beer. My teeth and jaw hurts when I drink it. I would like to know if anyone else has that problem.

I have the SAME exact reaction. I like to enjoy a beer or 2 with my meal and it’s almost impossible to avoid the horrible feeling you explained. It’s at its worst when I eat bread or potatoes with it. It’s sucks because everyone thinks I am crazy when I try to explain it but I’m glad I can relate to someone.

I also get what can only be described as a cramp in my jaws upon drinking my first beer. It isn't as bad as what some of you have described, and goes away after a little while. I have always assumed that it was just the relaxing of the muscles in my jaws from the alcohol. I hold a lot of tension in my neck, and I believe I also clench my jaws as well.

Well I guess I'll just never drink again. Didn't drink much to begin with anyway.

I’m allergic to sulfa and have this issue with wheat beer, cocktails with sweet & sour, and highly processed c**p, like, red baron’s French bread pizza which just caused this sensation prompting me to finally google it.

First time this happened to me tonight. Adding my scenario for thread. Was fasting for 36 hours, broke fast, had wine after dinner and shooting pain in first sip, continued but diminished with sips. Of note this mornings I was rinsing with mouth wash and came downstairs and was cleaning and putting dishes from sink into dish washer before spitting out - so by far the longest I’ve ever had mouthwash in my mouth before and felt numb which made sense when done. So I’m assuming excessive mouth wash use could make mouth more sensitive to this effect.

I have the same issue and gland pain below my ears, I am allergic to sulfa drugs and eggs, which I still eat. Not only beer or wine cause it, margarita, Bloody Mary, gin n tonic. I rarely drink so it bothers me to have this happen on a special occasion when I want to enjoy a drink or two. My face also gets read and sometimes my ears are red and warm. My thought is the sulfates and/or lack of an enzyme to properly metabolize the alcohol.

I have the exact same reaction, a severe pain in jaw and neck area right under my ears that lasts sometimes up to an hour or more when I drink all types of alcohol. It’s debilitating when it happens. I been researching this for years without answers for a solution. I am also severely allergic to sulfa drugs, it causes my white blood cells to completely shut down. A few years ago I started experimententing with taking an antihistamine 30 minutes before I drink alcohol, and Allegra has worked the best with me. There are once in a blue moon occasions where I still get the reaction after beginning to drink while taking the Allegra beforehand, but it’s significantly less painful and short lived compared to when I wasn’t taking the Allegra before drinking. I hope this finds and helps others with this same reaction.
