Its comforting to know that I'm not the only one suffering this pain. Mine started as a vague right sided toothache (top and bottom jaw) after a glass of wine about 6 weeks ago. Then it became worse, and noticeably after 3 sips of wine. I read the comments on this forum and thought perhaps it was just white wine, so tried vodka. BIG mistake, the pain was far far worse. It started as usual around the right jaw/teeth, then within minutes had spread to the ear, temple and down to the upper right chest. 2 or 3 of my upper teeth started throbbing and I could barely breathe through the pain. The next time I tried drinking wine with a straw in case it was a cracked tooth or something, trying to avoid the right side of my mouth completely. Same effect as the vodka, so its getting worse. Now I'm too scared to try any alcohol at all. Really not sure whether I should go to a doctor, dentist or just never drink again. Its only alcohol that produces the pain.
Is anyone else finding that its just one sided, or are you all feeling it generally in the jaw? And yes, I'm allergic to sulphur....but that doesn't explain the vodka.
I have had this problem for the past several years and it only gets worse. I sought the advice of my doctor and he sent me to the allergy dept, and ears, nose, and throat. They had no idea what is up with this. It started with wine, but now I can not drink any alcohol without having pain. I'm glad that I found these postings, because when I first googled this problem, I read that this was caused by cancer. WOW that was scary. I don't have any vices and have noticed that most of the people making posts, like me, don't drink very much or very often. I guess I'll have to take up skydiving.
i am a physician and also have this same problem of pain in jaws , but it does not always comes with a specific type of alcohol, neither it occurs always . ususally more when i takealcohol empty stomach and particularly mixed with soda . the same sensation is also felt when one consumes sour drinks or sour food items like lemon juice .the pain mostly is felt and starts from the angle of jaws where the parotid gland is located , hence i feel that this is due to stimulation of parotid gland produced by alcohol , the resultant swelling of the gland in turn irritates facial nerve which passes through its substance . any irritant material which stimulates salivary glands may bring about he same kind of pain . the salivary glandsecretion does not contain significant amount of amylase as compared to pancreas, hence , auto digestion like phenomena should not apply here .
I am and have the same exact thing but I also need a tooth taken out and it began 2 days after I had my teeth cleaned!I am allergic to sulfa! I was thinking it had to be my tooth! Warm water to the face area helps!
Hi Everyone,
I've had the same issue with alcohol and jaw pain too. Didn't start until my early 30s (40yo now-AA,F). My husband is a dentist and he has no idea what might be causing it, but I think I've discovered it.
Check your vitamin intake. Even if you take a multi-vitamin every day, like me, check to see which minerals have low doses in your multi-vitamin. I discovered that there are low dosages of magnesium and calcium in mine (and by 'low' I mean well below the daily recommended allowance or RDA). I take Centrum for women under 50, BTW. So, I started supplementing my multi-vit with extra calcium and way more magnesium.
The result? Feeling and looking better overall, but I had suspicions my lack of magnesium may have been contributing to my jaw issue too. Magnesium is such an essential mineral for the body, it suprises me that I don't hear more about its importance. So, I brought my magnesium (and calcium) intake up to the proper RDA for the last two months, and, last Saturday I had an entire glass of red wine with no resulting tightness or pain! NONE! And it had gotten to be where one sip did me in!
Now, could this be a coincidence? Could be, I suppose. But that's all that's changed in my lifestyle. I'll have to have a few more glasses of wine or some other alcoholic drink for me to feel totally confident, but I'm so impressed thus far, I had to share with my fellow sufferers.
Do some research. Check whether you may not be getting enough magnesium (and other essential minerals/vitamins). And try it for yourself. I hope this helps someone to become pain free.
I was having these pains, I started eating some apples, and even before I read this post as I finished my 1st apple, the pain increased while eating and then died down as I was reading this. I started eating my 2nd apple the pain had completely subsided by the end of my 2nd apple. Lol guess it was right.
I went to Bj's and had some jack daniels whiskey with my food. When I left and got in the car my jaws started to hurt like a sting so much I could not tolerate it or open my jaw. Searched google and found this forum. Read vitamin c and had some in my cabinet. Took it and pain immediately dissapeared. Thanks people... VITAMIN C definitely works.
P.S. I was on an empty stomach when I started drinking and only had two glasses.
I have this as well. It only happens when drinking beer or wine. I am also allergic to Sulfa!
Try drinking a few German import beers that specifically state they are brewed under the purity law;
I find don't get as much or any jaw pain from them.
My son (age 21) had all 4 of his wisdom teeth surgically removed at the end of Aug. 2013. It has been about 8 weeks since they were removed. He consumed some beer on Wednesday evening. Thursday morning he woke up with excruciating pain in his jaw. I was concerned it had something to do with the wisdom teeth extraction and we went back to the oral surgeon. The doctor said everything looked good and where the incision was, everything looked great. He took an x-ray just to make sure and that came back clear. The doctor prescribed Motrin to be taken every 6 hours for the pain. It took 4 doses of the Motrin to finally alleviate the pain. This morning (Fri) he is finally pain-free.
I started thinking about what lead up to this pain and remembered he was consuming beer the night before. He had consumed alcohol before but this is the first time it has brought on such pain.
If you are having teeth extracted, lay off the alcohol for a while!
YES! I have had this problem with alcohol consumption for quite some time and i am indeed allergic to the sulfa line of antibiotics. Thanks for the info.
