I'm currently having this same problem, a tingling pain in the back of my jaw whenever I take a sip which is the reason I'm on this forum. But I just realised if I have 3 quick mouthfuls one after the other it seems to stop and hasn't come back since done so, maybe this could help kill the pain for now like It has for me

I agree with the sulfa reaction being the problem. I have an extreme pain down both sides of jaw from ears when drinking wine that states it contains sulphites (usually a cheaper wine). My Grand Mother was also allergic to sulphites so I'm thinking this may be a sign I may be allergic or having a reaction too. The comment above regarding the pancreatitis is unnerving as well and maybe something to look into. Thanks!

I'm allergic to sulfa drug and I have an issues with this!

Drink a sip of orange juice or eat an orange when this happens.. The vitamin C takes it right away...

I have this issue, it most often happens if I drink red wine. I am allergic to sulfa as well. I think your explanation makes the most sense as it doesn't happen every time I drink, but probably when I drink a wine that has a lot of sulfite in it.

NO...food makes it worse. I was starting to believe I was the only one with this freaky thing because I never found anyone else it happened to (I asked probably 20 people over the years and the couple doctors I asked had no clue either). Also, BTW, my wife had TMJ (somone mentioned TMJ in the thread ) and she never had this happen to her. I'm in my 50's now and drink very infrequently, but it STILL happens more often than not...like just now, and, as usual, I also ate while I drank (I drank a Jack Daniels and 7-Up, but it can happen to me with beer and wine too). Anyway, the pain is sometimes so intense I have to massage my jaws until it passes (usually 15 to 30 minutes), but if I have another drink, it doesn't come back. I like the "like pancreatitis" theory and I'm glad to finally have an answer to a decades old question.

Really...??? Gotta try that! Thanks!

All due respect, but Dr. Gupta is guessing. I don't grind my teeth and I have no allergies or other diseases. Please read the reply re: ectopic pancreatitis. Since ectopic pancreatitis is generally a-symptomatic (gosh I love google), this suppots the theory of it being the source of this odd and sometimes excrutiating pain since there seems to be so many people experiencing it.

I have found that drinking something with calcium neutralizes the effect - milk, icecream, almond milk or whatever else....

I'm having this problem as I speak, and I am allergic to sulfa drugs. I had a couple glasses of wine and both sides of my jaw up to my ear are stinging pretty badly!

That is interesting. I am allergic to sulphur drugs too. Does your jaw get worse when you try to eat sweets? Mine exacerbates with toothpaste too... But I am telling you, for immediate relief, suck ice and place it close to your salivary glands. The pain intensifies for an instant, but then complete relief is experienced. So I always have a glass of ice cubes nearby when I drink my wine. Lol!!!

This has happened to me on and off for years. Exact same crippling pain. I believe it's related to my overall sugar intake or related to yeast somehow. I'm a light drinker, maybe 1 glass every two weeks. For me beer, usually amber or dark beers mostly, bring the most painful and consistent results. Wine and sweet hard alcohol are next, and then I usually don't have trouble with vodka, gin, or bourbon. The pain comes more frequently if I'd had a lot of pastries or other sugary foods in the same week. However when I eat less sugar and drink more water I can consume more than 2 drinks in a night. Anyone else have a sweet tooth in this thread?

Thanks for the Vitamin C suggestion! I drink red wine on a weekly basis, and tonight I experienced this pain for the first time. Googled it, found this great thread, tried drinking a glass of OJ, the pain subsided immediately, and now I'm on glass #2. Cheers!

I am allergic to sulfa drugs and have this same jaw symptom when drinking certain alcoholic beverages. Weird, never made the connection!
