I got my good 'ole Jones Fracture on my left foot on April 14th during my off season training up at my university. Really is a pretty sad break considering all i was doing was just make a hard cut on my left foot and snap. I was in a hard cast for a month and couldn't get home because I was finishing up classes and exams. I play soccer for my school and it is a fall sport so the surgeon opted for poppin a screw in there. Anyone else who has this fracture i would totally opt for surgery. It speeds up the healing process so much. Add alittle bone graph from your heel like my surgeon did and it really helps. 3 weeks crutches no weight. 2 weeks walking boot. 1-2 weeks of therapy and you will be fine.

Also, I would beg the doc for a walking boot when you see him for your post opt so right when your off the cast you can get in the pool and get back in shape. Im so close to being free from this mess. Good luck!

I too am sitting here with a jones fracture. It happened on May 23. I am a first grade teacher and had to leave school before the end of the year testing. It is very frustrating. I am in an air cast without walking, using crutches and a knee walker. In four weeks I will get and xray to see if it is starting to heal. I am hoping that I will not need surgery.
I keep telling myself that happiness is a choice and I am choosing to stay happy, but it sucks not being able to do anything. I just keep praying that I will be able to return to work in September for the new school year.

Good luck to all!

Well when I first saw the dr at the fracture clinic and was told it was Jones I didn't understand what he was going on about and was given a cast and told not to put any weight on my foot at all. Last Friday it was 4 weeks since I injured my foot and it's starting to heel and was given a aircast boot for next 4 weeks so hoping to be without any cast soon. So hoping all is well and good luck to everyone else.

Any up-dates to the stories above?? I am now 4 weeks post-op after breaking 4 metatarsals in my foot, and last week's x-ray show no signs of healing yet. I would like to know how everyone who posted above have made out now that time has gone by.
I am hoping that in another 2 to 4 weeks the doctor will tell me I can switch from hard cast to plactic boot and begin to put some weight on the foot.
Can anyone tell me how long it was for you from time of break to when you could actually put enough weight on it to say that you were walking comfortably?

Hi! I got a Jones Fracture on April 11, 2009. I went immediately to the orthopedic surgeon the same day and was put in a hard cast for 4 weeks. When I went for my 4 wk checkup, x-rays showed no healing, so he put me in a cam walker boot for another 4 weeks. Still no healing. After 3 months in the cam walker, a decision to operate was finally made. So, 2 weeks ago I had a screw put in. I was a soft splint for 10 days and now am in a hard cast again. Still no weight bearing for 4 more weeks!! I am getting really discouraged. The doctor says after 4 weeks in the hard cast I should be able to walk again (after physical therapy). Has anybody fully healed after this injury? I am beginning to think this is a never-ending process.

Hello fellow injured people.

Had obtained my jones fractured around Aug. 20th 2009 playing soccer.
Was given an air-cast (no weight bearing) for about 6 weeks. After the cast came off, doctor said to wait 3 weeks and then slowly get back to impact exercises (ie. running).
It is now November 6th. Last night I ran on it hard. I mean HARD. Jumping on the broken foot, spring, pivoting, etc... Trying to assess where I was at. No pain the following morning and it feels good.
HOWEVER, every post I've read indicated a much longer healing time. I haven't seen any updates from these posts so I'm not sure who else has recovered.
I geuss if you've healed you have no real use to come back to the site...but follow-up on these cases would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS

Hello everyone!

I twisted my foot in the driveway after stepping on an acorn, of all things! (Really, the fun story is that I was skiing in Aspen and fell while on the black diamond slope...at least I would have been having fun!). Anyway, I limped over to my neighbor's house and got crutches right away then was taken to the doctor. I was told I had broken the bone all the way around but it was not displaced and that it was the 5th metatarsal, Jones Fracture. Well, I opted not to have the surgery and have been in a hard cast, non-weight bearing, for 6 1/2 weeks and on crutches. The doctor wants me to come in for an appointment so she can xray the injury and then put another hard cast back on. What's the point? I think I'd rather just wait until 8 weeks are up and then have a soft cast and boot. Does anyone have any similar stories....those who did not have surgery??? I have been taking bone and joint supplements that will really speed up the healing process. I'm healthy and was very active, usually walking a very brisk 5 miles a day, 4-6 days a week. I'm ready to exercise!

Thanks and great healing to all of you! :-)

I'm also an unlucky person with a Jones fracture in my right foot. i did mine on 21st October 09 during a game of netball. It's is apparently a stress fracture due to spending so much time on my feet especially at work, so if I'm really unlucky i will get one in my left foot also. After my first xrays i was put in a moon boot and allowed to walk, after 4 weeks i had further xrays and the fracture gap had increased! So i went into walking plasters for 6 weeks, during which a small amount of healing had occurred, then was put in a non weight baring cast with crutches for 3 more weeks. I visited 2 ortho specialists when this plaster came off, but even though it wasn't healed one told me to go back to work, the other said wait 3 more weeks and come back for more xrays. I then contacted a sports surgeon who specializes in foot / ankle surgery, so im booked in for my op in 5 days :-D This has been a tough 3 months as i cant work at all, thank goodness for my parents support. Being only 23 i didnt want to just go on without being able to play sort or exercise again. ill let u no how my recovery from surgery goes, but i wish you all luck!

Well, here's a story that will cheer you all up. My 'first' Jones Frature was on my right foot playing Touch Football in May 05. The doctor treated it conservatively and it healed within 12 weeks. I re-fractured the same break in August 05, snowboarding then December 05 playing soccer. Good fun hey. All were treated conservatively.
All was good until June 09 when I fractured the same bone in my left foot this time. Another Jones Fracture. This time the Doc performed surgery and inserted a screw to help the healing process and speed up recovery. All was healed when it broke again in October and then again last weekend in Feb 2010. So the moral of the story is. Even though the Doc has said you are all healed and ready to return to normal activities....tread lightly. Good Luck.

I tend to be a klutz so this should be a funny story to read. I spun around really fast and slipped on my backpack, of course had to get a jones fracture in the 5th metarsal. I was in a split for a week, then went to an orthopedic surgeon and he used to treat those fractures more conservatively and most of the time the bone didn't heal so he suggested I do surgery, put a screw in. I got lucky and there was a cancellation so I got surgery after a week. I've been non-weight bearing using crutches for four weeks. I get to finally start putting weight on my left foot.

The pluses of surgery is less time on crutches and the pin does stabilize the bone.

Hi

I fell over at work and broke my foot which turned out to be a jones fracture. The hospital missed it and said it was a sprain, even though they xrayed it. Gave me crutches and off I went. 5 Weeks later, I knew it was not right, so I went back for xrays and they had missed the jones fracture but said it looked like it had healed!!! I have a lump on the side of my foot and still in bad pain. My new employer sacked me (I am suing them and they have already admitted liability) so went to see a specialised 2 weeks ago for xray and mri scan and low and behold it is still broken!! I have now got to have a metal plate inserted to fix it and probably 8-9 weeks in plaster again, never mind physio, doctors at the ER really anoy me sometimes. Now I have a nice boss and luckily I can work from home through me being in a cast. This is in England aswell!!!

What I need to know is after surgery to insert the plate - will I go straight into a dry cast?

I had a jones fracture in January that refused to heal in January. Had surgery putting a plate and 6 screws in on February 12. I wore the boot, crutches, no weight bearing for over 9 weeks. Then wore the boot for an additional 4 weeks. I am getting very tired of it all by this point. At my post-op appointment the dr. says they can still see the crack in my bone. I was allowed to wear running shoes with additional sole supports in them. Now here I am almost 4 weeks later, and my ankle has started swelling. I haven't done anything to it, no running, no jumping, and the swelling continues. I don't know how much longer I'm going to have to deal with this. Does anyone have any advice or ideas of why my ankle and foot would be swelling when the surgery was 3 months ago?

I broke my foot 3/12th went to the Urgent Care 3/14th they said it was a Jone's Fracture and to go see my Podiatrist ASAP. Saw him 3/16th he redid x-rays then put me in a hard cast (fiberglass). I was told to use a wheelchair. I am a 3rd grade teacher & at school I am uncomfortable but at least I have 25 kids to help me with every little thing...At home, I basically have little help & can't manuever the chair in the house so I managed to crack the heel twice in not quite 8 weeks. Unfortunately, I managed to get both a UTI and sinus infection due to not drinking enough water (because I am unable to use the restroom very often at work!) ANYWAY, I Went back for x-rays on 5/10th only to be told that there might be "some" bridging (translation minor repair) but not enough to make any difference. So he put fiberglass cast back on, told to use the wheelchair ANOTHER 6 weeks...This cast is WORSE than the other one. It feels tighter and just awful! My question is my regular dr. told me that I should be taking Calcium AND Vitamin D supplements so I have been doing that but does anyone else have any suggestions. By the time he redoes the X-Ray next it will have been 14 weeks!!! This to me is an eternity!!! Any suggestions would be helpful!

I am very curious about the surgery. I have now officially finished week 11 of having the fiberglass cast on (went 5/10 for x-ray) & have an apt. in about 2 weeks for a new x-ray. The cast is HELL. It is making my ankle/the top of the foot and my big toe hurt (and this while having it elevated AND when i am in the wheelchair). I am reading more and more that surgery is faster. Can someone tell me what the surgery is like please? Is it outpatient? What do most Drs. do? I have had NUMEROUS surgeries and would prefer not to have another one but I don't want to deal with this all summer, I have been missing so much, I am DESPERATE (as in I read if you take extra Calcium, Vitamin D & C it would help so I have, I read a cat's purr would help so I have been making my cat cuddle & purr by me :-)).
Please let me know what other people think & about the surgery. This cast seems to be making it worst not better....
