Hi,

I am a 48 yo male, very active. I sufferred an acute Jones Fracture on my left foot on NYE. I had the ORIF surgery and the 6.5 mm screw inseted to my 5th metatarsal on 1/16/2015. Had a soft cast - no weight bearing for 3 days. Surgeon examined the stitches and said they looked good. Now put into a hard cast for an additional 7 days of non weight bearing. Hoping to salvage ski season... Will keep you posted.

I was strictly on crutches and no weight bearing for 7 days. Hard cast removed 1/26, and I received a walking boot. My doctor said to bear weight as you can take. Well I put on my hiking boots and went to work today. We just got 30 inches of snow, so I couldn't use the walking boot outside, so I brought it with me to work. Well - I stayed in my hiking boot because I was mostly pain free. I did cringe once when I turned hard to the right. but it was for a split second. Will keep you posted.

Had a Jones fracture in December 2014. Tomorrow it will be 5 weeks and 1 day with this nightmare. I had no surgery, been using an ace wrap and hard ortho shoe, no weight bearing. Well, I am healthy, do not smoke, drink, eat well, no diabetes. I bought a knee roller the first week of the fracture, so I would not have to use crutches. Two weeks ago I felt my left popliteal area larger than the other leg. i went straight to ER and was diagnosed with a huge  popliteal DVT! I was devastated to say the least. I'm so sick of this whole thing. I am starting to touch ground with my foot while on the crutches. Do you think I can start slowly start walking on this foot?

No, I  go back to the podiatrist next week and I'm going to let him know I HAVE TO START MOVING ON BEFORE I DIE. I will search the whole state for a doctor who will start me on physical therapy. I have no swelling, just slight slight pain on the side where the fracture is. I can't stand this anymore. Can someone please tell me after over 5 weeks I can start getting better. So frightened that something else will happen if I don't start moving on.

Hello, I have an avulsion fracture along with a non-displaced "jones " fracture right below it. I was told that each should heal in a short leg fiberglass cast in 6-8 weeks. I was in a light fiberglass ,lots of padding, nwb cast for a week, and re X-ray. I never went to an emergency room, I waited 24 hours and found a foot and ankle specialist that takes my insurance. I didn't think it was anything more than a really bad ankle sprain. I missed the last step on my patio stairs, barefoot in the dark, in my pajamas, trying to get my dog. Stupid dog came to me when I was down and wanted to jump all over me and play and lick me...anyway, after one week, the xray looked exactly the same, no change. My doc who is a d.o, built me a really heavy bottomed weight baring short leg fiberglass cast, he told me to try and walk with crutches, partial weight and it would stimulate blood flow, but he wanted my torn ankle ligaments to heal also. He also gave me a Darco cast boot that is heavy, sturdy soled with traction and ankle support. It's heavy duty(Amazon has it for like $25 bucks. It's not like the first shoe he gave me which was like a blue sandal. Anyway, this boot has made it 50% less painful toput weight and I can even walk short distances without crutches. I've been in this cast now 3 weeks, and more and more im ditching the crutches. I ho back next week for more X-rays and a new cast hopefully, this one is getting dirty. I bought a waterproof cover at Walgreens to shower everyday and I can stand. I also read everything and I'm prepared to be in a cast a few more weeks and I will not consider surgery if it's not healing. I was told that 12 weeks is the magic number. He saidwalking boots cause it to move around too much and custom fit casts are the best. Plus, women tend to take them off more often or stay in them too long and walk around too much. Overall, it's been very painful but this cast boot is so helpful if you are walking on it. I'll try and update next week.

I visited my Foot and Ankle surgeon on 2/13/2015. At this point, I can walk, full weight bearing without crutches or boot and in my hiking boots. My foot feels "tired" after walking around the office. My guess is that it is going to take time to regain my stamina. The doctor gave me the ok to ski and wants a follow up in 3 weeks. So I go and put my ski boot on. It was excruciatingly painful and tried to keep it on for a half hour, but it was too much. To adjust this, I went to a local ski shop. They were able to "punch out" the boot to accommodate my foot. Cost $25 to fix. The next day, I went skiing. The foot felt fine, but the rest of my body is not in ski shape...off to the gym... Good Luck with your Jones Fracture and getting the surgery was the best decision I have ever made.

I visited my Dr. on 4/2... I have been back to skiing double black diamonds and in the trees - so I am happy. She finally cleared me to start lightly jogging around the HS track... So far Very pleased with my recovery.

Hello everyone!  i have been reading alot of your posts this evening.  Just don't know what to think.  I had my jones fracture while walking in Vietnam, on vacation.  When it happened I was in deep pain.  But, I was leaving for Singapour the next day, and kept walking for two weeks, enduring all the pain, till after two weeks after the fracture consulted a doctor in Saigon.  Told me that since the Jones fracture had been done since two weeks, the worst was behind and told me to continue my vacations. Coming back from vacation I was still having some pain, but I tolerated it, till I missed a stair in my basement and got a spranged ankle on the same foot, which ended me in emergency.  I now have an air cast, but I have been walking on it since day one, and this has been on my foot and leg since 4 weeks, one more week to go and the doctor told me to take it off 2 weeks before my next appointment.  I am a little worried when I read that most of you did not walk on it even when you had your air cast!  I do really hope I didn't over do it by walking with the air cast :O(

I suffered a Jones a week and a half ago. I am thinking about getting the surgery after reading all these horror stories. I worry the screw head will be painful in future for putting ski boots on or having them on for an extended period of time. Have you had any issues with soreness where screw is since surgery?

I bought a knee wheeler! They are awesome. Crutches are awful.

THANK GOD I found someone who suffered a Jones fracture the SAME EXACT WAY by stepping out of my car onto my driveway and stepped on an acorn and rolled my ankle. Like you, I WAS very active riding horses every day and I certainly WISH I had injured myself while doing something "fun" at least. At any rate, I have been in a hard cast now for three months on crutches! Yes…3 MONTHS! I was given a bone stimulator and have been taking calcium and Vit D3 supplements as well. After two months in the cast, the doctor said it was healing up and said let's give it another couple weeks in a hard cast. Well…something happened and it seemed to have stopped healing altogether. My doctor ordered a Ped-CAT which apparently wasn't in my favor. The doctor said the X-rays were deceiving and that the bone wasn't really healing up like they thought. So…now I'm scheduled to have surgery next week to insert a "plate" which my doctor said would push the bone together and reduce the chance of it breaking in the future. As mentioned above, I am an avid horse rider and I want desperately to get back to my riding and my life in general. It has been VERY hard learning to depend on others for just about everything. I wish ALL of you the best of luck and I will let you guys know how the surgery and recovery process goes.

Please give acupuncture a shot first!!! It's worth a try vs getting plates!! Give it four or five sessions and about five weeks!!! It worked for me!!!

I had a Jones fracture in early May. Was fitted with a walking boot and told to weight bear as tolerated. I tried the walker and crutches but couldn't stand either or after about 2 weeks I just walked on the heal of the boot. I could take it off when sitting for long periods and for sleeping and bathing. After a month it was taken off and I was told to wear hard soled shoes or sneakers. It took another 8 weeks to heal completely but after reading these horror stories I realize I was lucky that my doctor allowed me to weight bear as tolerated and to drive at 4 weeks as soon as the boot came off. I never really knew what "as tolerated" meant as people have different pain tolerance and mine is pretty high when I want to do something, like walk without a walker.

How did this work out for you? I am in a similar situation. Broke my 5th met, Jones, Jan 27, 5 weeks NWB, looked worse, had screw fixation, NWB for 6 more weeks and have been trying to walk on it for the last 2 weeks with crutches but can't rid myself of the crutches. How long did it take for you to heal and be able to walk without the boot
