Back pain and stomach pain is normal during your period. This is near your spine which is central to your nervous system, the knees are the end of a main nerve connected to the spine and is tricking you into thinking your knee is the source of the pain as well.
Hope I helped!]This is probably why doctors have been brushing people off cos this is normal for all kinds of pain and weren't bothered to explain this!

Although there can be several causes of knee pain, which hormone changes can aggravate. The most common reason for knee pain, swelling, and redness (all signs of inflammation) can be caused by or aggravated by menstruation. The reason being that during menstruation there is an increase in prostaglandins, and prostaglandins cause inflammation. The higher the levels of prostaglandins in your body the more inflammation you will have. So system in your body that is more prone to inflammation is going to increase during menses. Knees are the most common joint for people to experience inflammation, as such they are most likely to be effected by your menses. Even something as simple as sinus inflammation (due to allergies) can increase significantly during menses as a result of prostaglandins. Assuming that there are no larger issues at hand (which should always be evaluated by a doctor), switching to a anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle can make a huge difference. It will also ease the pain associated with monthly cramps. Taking fish oil capsules daily is by far the easiest way to ease inflammation, and it also boasts a number of other health related benefits. But make sure to see your doctor and get evaluated as there are ailments that could be causing or compounding the level of inflammation in your body.

Hey, I too have knee pain during my cycle. I'm not a medical professional but on chatting to a friend who deals with sports injuries she suggested that it could be to do with water retention. Fluid on the joint could be causing the problem, which is why it comes and goes.

I'm 20 now, but my period was like that, I found out I had an ovarian cyst...yeah. But they put me on birth control pill and it helps a whole lot!

My experience is that it's the 'weakest link' in the system that hurts.
I had serious knee pain during the period, like some people complain of back pain.
I decided I needed to build up the quad muscles more - I started using weights and doing squats.
Then, jogging to lose weight and tone those muscles.
That worked for me. No more knee pain.
Also - strangely - drinking milk before my period seemed to prevent pain.
I suspect if someone has back pain, they should work on their abs.

Hi,

I have these sporadic knee (mostly right knee) pains and I noticed recently it happens around the time I'm going to have periods. Also, I'm a thyroid patient.

I wondered if the thyroid could be messing something up, any pointers?

It is interesting to find so many people with this same problem. My knees have also always hurt just before my period starts. However, with me it is very little pain but mostly a strange sensation - like my knees are going numb. Also it always happens approximately an hour or two before my period so I've found it pretty helpful- a warning of sorts. :)

I saw my doctor again. After various blood tests and x rays that all came back normal except for my vitamin D level, I have been ordered to take vitamin d everyday. I have another appointment in three months to test again and hopefully the pain is gone or there is another theory..

I never thought I was unique in this. Periods can make you hurt all over. I usuall hurt from mid stomach all the way to my feet the first day. You hold extra water when you are on your period and the swelling makes you hurt worse. Well it definitely causes me to feel worse. But I always have a really bad first day and then my period is pretty much gone by day 3.

I am 23 and I always hurt really really bad the first day. I have hypOthyroidism, but am not overweight, I am actually borderline underweight. Im sure the thyroid disease makes it a little worse seeing as to how it controls every hormone in our body. My knees and hips also hurt really bad. I usually hurt from the waist down when I am on my period. Just makes me feel achy and terrible but it doesn't last long...one time last year I had the usually terrible period bloating and it was hurting extra bad and kept going after my period stopped. I got an ultrasound and they told me I had a small cyst on my ovary. I know that these can make periods hurt worse. Unfortunately it is just something we women have to deal with. Rotate nsaids, take some diuretics, Apple Cider Vinegar helps everything, whether you think it will hurt too bad or not do some cardio, you will definitely feel better after. One of my favorite things to take during my period is Holy basil. It is amazing for stress and it just stops you from being grouchy when you have to endure the pain...
