Hi! actually this is one of my problems during my menstrual period, i couldn't bare the pain on my left knee and thigh i've been really searching for a solution for this for quite time, not only that my knees and thighs hurt, but also my spine, i let my cousin or anybody else at home who knows how to crack my back and I feel relived and can go to bed after the quick twist. but it's not good to always crack your spine, and i'm aware of that, so i'm looking for alternative solution. Since i was young 11 during my very first period, i've been suffering from this pain, long before, my uncle which is a doctor once told me that i maybe dehydrated and maybe i'm lacking calcium, so i've been drinking large pills of calcium for that moment, the pain did actually eased for about 2 months (i don't remember) but then even if i was taking the pills the pain did still come back. i really want to get rid of the pain already. it hurst so bad that i can't even sleep at night. if you have an update please post it for everybody :) thanks!

I know this is an old post but I just found it and thought I'd comment. I am 38 and only about a year ago started getting extreme knee pain before my period. It is difficult to get up and down stairs and even to sit and stand. I had extensive xrays and ultrasounds done on my knees to no avail. The doctor I saw suggested Vitamin D and Omega 3 supplements and they really seemed to help. I have been lax in taking them daily and have found the pain to be mounting again.

It's probably lack of hormones due to the cycle of hormones during your menstrual cycle

I just started having these same pains in my knees and thighs this year.  My weight did increase, but I thought the knee pain should not come only a couple of days before my menses if weight was the issue.  I found relief with the heat thermal patchs for the back.  I place them on my knees and prop my legs up, and a hot bath in Epson salt helps. I no longer get the pain in my thighs, just my knees.  I have never had such pain in my joints ever.  Also, I started taking Glucosamin and Chondroidin.  I can barely stand up it's so bad.  I got scared because I thought I was developing arthritis.

Try to soak your feet into hot water and refill the water to keep it hot (not burning your skin) for at least 15 minutes, Prefer before bed time. Try it two weeks before your menstrual period, repeat daily or at least 2-3 times per week. Also drink ginger tea few days before your period start. Method for making ginger tea: Cut ginger into slices and boil them in the water for 5-10 minutes. Then add brown sugar and drink the tea while it's hot enough to make your body warm.

thank god i fround this discussion i was scared that i was the only one. ive had knee pain when im on my period since i started but it started effecting my day to day life as i do dance as a hobby and gcse.i went tot the doctors and they said that they could find no reason for the knee pain and asked lots of questions abour my period that made me feel stupid. i have kept a dairy on when the pain hits and what i was doing at the time so i could see any cause for the pain. i adice anyone with this type of knee pain to do the same and if it gets to bad to go to the doctors and take the diary.

from what i understand it could be Anterior knee pain syndrome. This is knee pain felt at the front of the knee, around the kneecap. The cause is not understood, but it is usually made worse by sitting for prolonged periods or by climbing stairs. You can treat this yourself with anti-inflammatories, an icepack and rest, and you should also do strengthening exercises for the muscles in front of your thigh.

i recomend to go the the doctors if:

•you cannot put weight on your knee at all

•you have severe pain even when you're not putting weight on it

•your knee locks or painfully clicks (painless clicking is OK)

•your knee keeps giving way

•your knee looks deformed

•you have fever, redness or heat around the knee, or it is very swollen

•you have pain, swelling, numbness or tingling of the calf beneath your affected knee

i hope this information helped anyone!

Wow, I finally found that I'm not alone! My doctor assures me that there's no connection between my period and the severe cramping I have in my left knee. I'm 49 years old and have been having these awful cramps in my knee during the heaviest day of my cycle (usually the second or third day). The pain/cramp is only in my left knee and seems to radiate from under the knee cap. I've never had bursitis, but the pain seems similar to the description of it. I gotta note that I've only had the knee pain for the last 5 years or so, but have not experienced any dramatic weight gain, nor to I have thyroid issues.. Gosh, if anyone ever figures this out, please post your findings because this pain is seriously interfering with my work, sleep, etc.......

I have had this same symptom since I was 14, I am now 48, I have asked my Doctors, they allways shrug and say they dont know. It is very frustrating, It hurts so bad sometimes that I feel sick to my stomach, and cant walk. The only thing that helps is heat applied directly to the knees.
