I'm 47 years old and have had this issue since before I had children (I don't remember when it started). I have had xrays, cortisone shots and every other treatment that anyone suggests. It hasn't gotten better. As a matter of fact, it tends to get worse as I get older. It started in my left knee and now have similar pains in my neck, shoulders and hips. Honestly, I hurt everywhere a day or two before I start and a day or so into my period. I can even tell when I'm ovulating because I have general achniess in my joints. I do have controlled hypothyroidism (my levels have been normal for years) and I am now overweight (but haven't always been). Anyway, I know it doesn't help correct your problems, but it is nice to know that I am not crazy. Everytime I speak to a doctor about it, they say that they have never heard of such a thing. My 17 year old daughter has begun to have similar symptoms (she is in great shape, exercises and does not have hypothyroidism). I feel really bad that I have passed this along. It is not fun to deal with.
Wow, so I'm not the only one out there. Mine has always slightly ached about a week before my period, but a couple years ago at about the age of 38, it started hurting severely and not only does it hurt just before my period, but now it also swells quite a bit, and is hot to the touch. Sometimes it hurts so bad that I can barely stand or walk on it. I have often debated going to the emergency room, but I have had many different problems with my periods, and I hate hearing that it is nothing, our that it is just my imagination. Or the worst thing that I get quite often....it's a hormone imballance...take birth control and you will be fine....sorry but I have been taking birth control most my life with no results, and have finally taken myself off them cause I feel they do absolutely nothing...besides....what is causing the hormone imballance...why do all doctors just use a hormone imballance like an excuse...Gand why can't you give me something other then birth control to help ease me? Ugh...so frustrated with both my menstrual cycle and doctors both!
At the same time as being diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (hypo thyroid) I began to experience severe knee, ankle, hip pain around and during my period. I wonder if there is a link?
I have had sever joint pain during my menstrual cycle for years but now over 30 years old it seems to be getting unbearable I feel like I did a thousand squats. I do have many reproductive organ issues such as endometreosis (spelling), pcod, cervical pre-cancer and PID..Yeah I got the c**p gene pool..but through all that I did find out that my hormones are all out of whack. I dont produce progestrone like I am suppose to when it is needed. Your hormone level and other unkown issues could be a cause for the pain. Put your foot down with doctor do your research and make a long list of ideas and questions. Make your doctor go through the lists with you. I hope the best for grand daughter after 19 years of this stuff it can be very hard to get people to believe or understand the pain level. Try heating pad and naproxen hope that helps..
I have the same thing, my doctors told me I'm anemic, which means I don't have enough iron in my blood. When you're on your period, you're obviously losing blood so it enhances the anemia which causes joint pain and other symptoms. You're granddaughter could take iron supplement pills to ease up the pain around the time of her period.
I'm 44 years old, and I've always had sore knee's associated to my menstral time. My doctor told me that discomfort in the knee's can be from this, especially if accompanied with pain on the lap part of the leg. He never told me why. This is not abnormal. I will mention, that I have been many different weights over the years, and the knee pain is lessened with a lower weight, at least for me. This might help. As far as pain killers.. anti-inflammatories are what work. There are some good natural anti-inflammatories that may help. For the really bad days, Ibuprofen. A heating pad wrapped around the knee is just amazing. Sorry to hear this young lady is stuck with what I got stuck with. As she gets older and can better handle the hormorne changes, she'll be able to better handle it.
Me to only mine is hips, knees and my ankles hours before my period and through the whole 10 days if mensies. Been brushed off by numerous doctors and even sent to or, when someone finds out please let me know.

I have an under active thyroid and 6 months ago came off the depo (contraceptive injection) since I have had agonizing period crapms in my abdomen going down to my knees. Currently on sofa with water bottles on knees & tum. It's so sore!
Kathy, I realize this is an old post but wondering how your knees are doing now. I finished a course of Cipro a month ago and have barely been able to walk since due to the knee pain. It's unbearable during my period and the few days before. I hope you are feeling better!
