I have the exact same thing and it also has been sonce I was a baby. I was always told that it was just growing pains, but now that I am 20 as well. I asked my OBGYN and she said that it's just part of the cramps I guess. But I've had this even before I started having my periods. I have poly cystic syndrome. Last week I was supposed to have my period but sadly I never got it. All the pain that can feel even today is my knee pain and pain around my right ovary where it's mostly effected. So I'm not sure what's going on.
Hi, I have the same thing. I always know when my periods going to start because I have severe aching with my knees like clockwork, the day before my period starts. I know this is associated with progesterone dropping suddenly, but I have no idea what to do about it!
I'm 34 years old and have dealt with this issue for years. My knee pain generally starts a day after my menses and will start in one knee the first day, then switch to the other knee the second day. It's very odd, but happens exactly as explained every month. The knee pain usually happens at night and the pain can be excruciating to the point that it wakes me up in the middle of the night. I need to take pain meds in order for the pain to go away, otherwise it just gets worse. My doctor also looked at me crazy as if I was making the whole thing up. Aside from the knee pain, I also have painful mentrual cramps. I recently started acupuncture to help with pms symptoms, which has been great, but I just realized that my knee pain has now for once started at the beginning of my period. I'm assuming that my hormone levels are now starting to level out, so I'm hoping this pain slowly dissipates as well.
I recently saw a gynaecologist and had a hysteroscopy to investigate my period pains and nothing was found. I too have hip and knee pain going back to when I was a teenager. The gynaecologist said that the womb is attached to spinal ligaments and nerves which can radiate pain down to the thighs and knees. Hope that's useful xx
So happy I'm not the only one who has this problem! I was worried it was going to be something worst. Told my mom figured her being a nurse she'd be able to help me or something but she looked at me like I was insane and then I told my Dr. he gave me the same weird look
I am 55 yrs old and get my period regularly. I too get this knee pain almost to the point of not being able to walk. I have passed out 3 times from it. Like clock work always on the first day of my period. The closest I have come to finding a reason has been a female hormone called relaxin. Some studies are being done with female athletes who have more knee injuries during there period.
It was interesting to read the thread of the same issue we all have. I have been with knee pain for the last 2 months. I am a very active lady and I am 49years old. Please visit your Dr. and ask him to check your level of estrogen and progesterone. Thank you
From reading these posts it seems this type of pain is the norm. Women's Health, -a Mainstream magazine, published an article about how hormones affect the way the muscles fire which may be the reason women are more vulnerable to ACL injuries. We've always known women and young girls were more likely to tear the ACL so it really shouldn't be a surprise that it's hormonal. I've always experienced severe pain with weather and with menstruation. I feel like the pain with menstruation is getting worse as I age; I know feel it in my knees (like usual), in the elbows very intensely and in the tailbone. I've read that magnesium and B12 may help. There are some supplements/herbs on the market specifically for this problem and I plan on trying them soon. analgesics do help me and I've learned that generally one must take massive doses to get kidney issues from it so I do take Advil quite a bit to take the edge off.
I get hip, knee, ankle, and feet aches a week before during and after my period. It's miserable don't have medical insurance to go to my doctor. I am only 20 years old.
I'm surprised to hear this is so common I've had these problems since I was young and recently noticed the flare ups during my periods I typically use creams and painkillers but hopefully soon doctors can figure something out to help us ladies out
I feel slight pain in my knees before I get my period But when I'm actually on it and get cramps my knees ache and it's usually my right one. I haven't seen a doctor, yet it hurts so bad but I hope for all of us to find a solution to this pain
I can relate to this but the only difference is am only 25 years old. I have had these severe pain since my first period and it got worse over the years amd doctors says on nothings wrong.etc..which pisses me off. The only pain killer that helps are Aleve and not just any one either. I suffer cramping in all my joints amd muscles especially my knees the become so inflamed and i get fever which along with the pain lasts two whole days. This makes me entirely weak and shivery and have my uterus feel as if someone is thuggin on it to come out. Its crazy cuz i get pms for two weeks before my period and pain worsens as my period starts even if there os jusy spotting. I was told to cut cold drinks from my diet as well as caffiene intake and include a bit more exercise and i tried it for a while it helped bt not for long. PS i would never wish this on anyone.
I’ve been dealing with the same thing every since I was a child at around 13 my mom took me to see a fix doc he took x-ray said my knees are fine. Chopped it up as growing pains. I’m 30 now and I still get those pain.
The pain comes and goes it feel like a weird sensation at first then it turns into an ache sometimes in one leg and at times both. It feels like radiating pain from my groin to my knee. I’m trying to do better job at tracking when it happens.
My period starts in 8 days and my left leg is hurting from the groin down to my ankle.

This also only happens at night
I'm 30 years old and I've been experiencing this knee pain since I started menstruating at age 12. It's horrible! I've found that any form of exercise that involves the knees relieves the pain, so tell your granddaughter to go for a walk (or dance!) as soon as this pain starts. I know that's absolutely the last thing she's going to want to do, but trust me, after 17 years of dealing with this, I've figured it out.
Also -- This is almost certainly not related to your granddaughter's weight, diet, etc. I'm 5'5.5 and since age 18 I've ranged from 83lbs (when I was very sick) to 150lbs. I'm currently sitting at 125lbs. My weight did not affect the pain in my knees whatsoever.
