So, had my tonsils out. Life-long history of throat pain and huge tonsils with tonsil stones and sinus infections. My tonsils have basically been chronically inflamed for 20+ years. It's been 14 days now and my post-op has been great so far. Not a lot of pain or anything. I'm pretty lucky. I went for my follow-up with the doctor today and she had the results of the lab work they do on the tonsils after they're removed. The cultures came back: Actinomycetes. She explained that this bacteria masquerades as a fungi. And that it is hard to culture (why I've never been diagnosed before) and hard to treat.

Doctor prescribed a three-week course of Amoxicillin.

When I got home, I looked it up. And it seems like the usual treatment is actually heavy doses of penicillin, taken with an IV, for like 3 months. Then a 6-month round of oral amoxicillin. So I'm wondering if just a three-week Rx of the amoxicillin is really enough.

But anyway, that's my story.

Anybody know anything more about Actinomycetes or have a similar experience?

Did you ever get an answer to this?

I had the same lab results after I had my tonsils out but they did not prescribe me anything. A few months before the surgery I was prescribed amoxicillin for 3 weeks but that did not seem to help with the “tonsillitis” and tonsil stones.
