Wow...nice to see some useful information that seems to match my problem. I'm in my early 40's and here's what I'm experiencing or experienced:

1) Feet get cold

2) Feet feel numb occasionally

3) Lower legs hurt on occasion

4) Feet and lower legs become swollen if I drink more often than not

5) Work in an environment requiring 50-50 sitting and (standing or walking)

6) For the past 1.5 yrs., drank 1-2 scotch or tequila's over ice per day - maybe 3 on the weekend (family member died - needed the crutch)

7) Overwieght by about 30 lbs.

8) Recently found out a family member had diabeties, was overweight and drank quite a bit more than I. Eventually had legs amputated and passed away about a year later. (Just stating the facts) :-(

9) Seen by a Family Dr. since my complaints and have had multiple blood tests and a full physical exam not showing us anything relative to the issues.

10) No longer drinking alcohol as of 2 days ago and it's a permanent change (hopefully not too late)

11) Smoked for 25 years about a pack per day but stopped 4 years ago (no cheating)

12) A Family member has Arthritis

13) A Family member has overactive thyroid

14) I have had abnormal Gas issue since as long as I can remember: Mostly belching from the time I wake up until bedtime (who knows...maybe while sleeping too) :-)

15) Pain in chest sometimes depending on food consumed and belching releives the pain

2 things I know w/o a doubt:

1 - No more drinking alcohol

2 - My feet are cold, hurt and partially swollen at this moment


If there was any value in this post for anyone else, I'm glad it helped. I posted after reading a previous post which has helped me make the decision to cut out alcohol.

It sounds to me like you might have a circulation problem if your feet get cold and numb like that on occasion. Have you looked into any assistance with that? It would be a good idea to see a doctor about it.

Everywhere I've looked the assumption is the leg pain is after heavy drinking and/or often. I'm twenty two and I rarely drink. The few times I do, its only enough to be social and I still end up with pain between my left hip to my knee. Same spot, every time.

I've never had a hangover, but I am usually moody the next day, but who wouldnt be with the pain, right?\
So, without excessive alcohol usage, is it the same thing?



And yes, I know, if it hurts- stop it.

I have never gotten drunk, i have only in one day have had maybe one beer. but like tonight i have had a half of glass of wine and my legs are starting to hurt.

No it's for none of those reasons.

it is because of these:

1) Alcohol causes the body to release lactic acid, which is the same chemical that causes your muscles pain while working out or during exercise.

2) Alcohol dehydrates you, which causes your body to stop producing electrolytes, which the muscles need to function.

To try and fix this: Drink plenty of water when you drink, and if your legs start to hurt drink something with salts in it, like Gatorade.

I'm 22, a heavy drinker and get sharp aching pains in my shins after a night of heavy drinking on some occasions. I am at work now and have had the pain for a few hours. It must be noted that I did not eat a lot before heavily drinking perhaps this is why the pain only occurs on some occasions? I will have to see if there is any correlation.

My husband had AVN problem. Doctors say, it is because of the Acohole. I was reseaching on this when i found this question. Now I believe it is true. My husband started getting pain on his hip and the joint area. We thought it could be some muscular pain because of work then pain spreaded to thigh and cuffs. After 6 months we found out he has got AVN (Avascular Necrosis of the Hip). and has to replace the joint with an artificial one. So PLS GUYS STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL!!!!

Symptoms include painless weakness of the limb muscles closest to the trunk and the girdle muscles, including the thighs, hips, shoulders, and upper arms. This weakness develops gradually, over weeks or months, without symptoms of acute muscle injury. Muscle atrophy, or decreased bulk, may be striking. The nerves of the extremities may also begin to break down, a condition known as alcoholic peripheral neuropathy, which can add to the person's difficulty in moving.


The way in which alcohol destroys muscle tissue is still not well understood. Proposed mechanisms include muscle membrane changes affecting the transport of calcium, potassium, or other minerals; impaired muscle energy metabolism; and impaired protein synthesis. Alcohol is metabolized or broken down primarily by the liver, with a series of chemical reactions in which ethanol is converted to acetate. Acetate is metabolized by skeletal muscle, and alcohol-related changes in liver function may affect skeletal muscle metabolism, decreasing the amount of blood sugar available to muscles during prolonged activity. Because not enough sugar is available to supply needed energy, muscle protein may be broken down as an alternate energy source. However, toxic effects on muscle may be a direct result of alcohol itself rather than of its breakdown products.


Although alcoholic peripheral neuropathy may contribute to muscle weakness and atrophy by injuring the motor nerves controlling muscle movement, alcoholic neuropathy more commonly affects sensory fibers. Injury to these fibers can cause tingling or burning pain in the feet, which may be severe enough to interfere with walking. As the condition worsens, pain decreases but numbness increases.

:after reading this website I feel so much better. I thought i was alone as nobody else that i know has eber had these symptoms after alcohol. This all started about two years ago after a very boozy weekend away celebrating turning 40. My hands and feet were burning and tingling and even had aches and pains in my arms. Also have noticed that it only happens when i drink large amounts of a
lcohol....... not just after 2 or 3 glasses of wine. Will try the bananas and as going to try and stop drinking as much and only in moderation.

I'm 34 years old. I've had the leg pain problem after drinking since I was 16. Started drinking regularly at 14. In my teens and twenties, I probably drank every weekend. Now, about 5-10 times per year. The pain doesn't happen every time I drink, just sometimes. I've asked doctors and they don't have any answers. For the past four years, my blood tests that the doc runs during my annual check-up show an unusually low white blood cell count. Doctor can't explain it, but she continues to run tests to monitor it. Otherwise, I eat healthy and stay fit. I'm a long distance runner; used to think the pain had something to do with that. Next time I visit the doctor, I'll ask about the Liver Function Test mentioned above. Thanks. I know, I should stop drinking.

I know after a night of drinking, especially if I've been physically active, say, by dancing, I will get leg cramps and charlie horses later that night, and calf pain the next day. (I am in my early 20's in case you feel that makes a difference.)

Leg cramps can come about specifically through dehydration, physical activity, certain medications, and malnutrition/chemical imbalances, so I usually attribute it to that. Drinking dehydrates you, and cramps happen more commonly to skeletal muscles that span two joints, such as the calf (between the ankle and knee), and your hamstring (between your knees and hips).

Also, leg cramping and pain usually affect heavier individuals (not necessarily obese).

Put these factors together and you have a basic reasoning for the issues your having.

I also have lots of pain on my legs , please guys alcohol is very dangerous, I drink it as I can't affort meds for adhd and the anxiety kills me at times, I used to do mdma and I was perfectly fine but I don't wan't to jeopardize my freedom and end in jail ironically I am allow to drink!!! that has being the only hardcore dangerous thing that I ever tried and sadly is the only legal and affortable to me. is not all the time tho, is like a few drinks every week, but still a horrible poison : /

from what i can see alot of the sufferers from this leg pain are regular drinkers, whereas i am not, and im not a heavy drinker either, however sometimes when i do drink the pain criples me and i am unable to sleep. tonight is a good example of this. i could barely walk to the toilet the pain is so bad :-(
i understand why it is best to stop drinking, but i have recently turned 18, is there really no other suggestions???

It is definitely alcohol I had the same issues seen the doctor was given heaps of different vitamins and sh*t and it had no effect at all. I had this problem for about 5 years and I gained 5 stole from the damn alcohol. I have been on a diet for the last 2 months and lost 7 kilos but still had the cramping I haven't drank any alcohol for over a week now and the cramps are gone and I feel so much better and even Hypo for a 17 stone fat bastard that can almost out run a 8 year old school kid is pretty impressive.
So yer fellas just lay of the booze and see and you'll feel heaps better for it.

i understand how the liver cant deal with alchohol so it causes dehydration and leg pain...but im not really a drinker and i can literally drink a half a cup of juice mixed with liquor....more juice then alchohol....and most likely not even finish the drink and my legs would be killing me...no more then 30mins from when i started drinking...from my hips all the way down to my ankles...im not a drinker and when i do drink its very rare and i dnt drink anywhere near enough to get drunk...ive looked it up but all i find is results with people getting drunk or drinking regularly and often....
