I found this forum after looking for some answers as to what may have happened to me the other night..

I've been taking 10mg of Lexapro for 1 month and found very little side effects, the first tablet I took made me feel quite euphoric and high but after that, little to report and my anxiety seemed to improve after a matter of days.

I am a fairly seasoned drinker, don't drink every day but generally binge quite a bit most weekends. In general, the lexapro has made me not feel like having a drink so I don't even know what possessed me to drink so much the other night..

I had a few drinks, remember feeling quite fine.. Felt drunk though, continued to pour drink after drink.. STUPIDLY I also took 2 valiums.

suddenly I completely blacked out, I had no memory of anything I said or did moments after doing so. I was acting out of character and screaming and yelling at my boyfriend..

All I remember is one minute I was talking to my mum who had just got home, the next minute I'm chasing my boyfriend down the road screaming at him and not understanding why he was leaving.. I came back inside went to bed, got back up and was walking around the house in the nude, I had no inhibition that it was inappropriate.. (my poor mother got out of bed and found me in said state!) :$

I've never had an experience like this, even with the exploits of my younger days where i'd been known to take a 'cocktail' of other substances with alcohol.. I'm definitely pretty much stopping the booze all together after this, one or two occasionally.

Hi,l I read your post as to you taking Lex and alcohol and having blackouts and landing up in jail. I had a similar experience but on Xanax and of course I am now facing a jail term as I apparently assaulted my husband and son. I do not recall drinking alcohol whilst taking Xanax on the second occasion when disaster struck, I literaly passed out at approx. 1130am, so was definitely not boozing. Of course I dont remember a thing, in fact I was out for two days from Friday morning to Sunday 6am. Then the cops arrived and I was arrested and spent three days in prision whilst waiting bail. I just cannot deal with this as I have no memory and assaulting anyone, especially my beautiful family is so out of character. How on earth did your lawyer have the case dismissed?

Ok WOW... reading all these posts, it suddenly makes so much more sense. I used to be able to drink quite a bit, but about 8 months ago I was prescribed Lexapro for anxiety. The first couple of times I drank with it(I was only on 5mg to begin with), I had a feeling of euphoria and got extremely hyperactive(which I didnt mind too much because I was still in control). I have sinced had my dose upped to 10mg, and have noticed a definate change. I have had several big nights(still not drinking as much as I used to) where I have blacked out, and not remembered big chunks of the night. Apparently I act completely out of character, including starting arguments with people, including my friends and doing things I wouldn't normally do, even when drinking. I notice that when I drink, I will have a couple, still feel pretty sober, then BAM.. I black out and do crazy sh*t I don't remember. Some of it I hear, and I don't believe the person because it really doesn't sound like something I would do...

I wasn't warned by my dr that lexapro and alcohol didn't go together, I must say the warning on the packet doesn't really say DON'T DRINK.. maybe it should.. I have now had my medication increased to 20mg, so after reading all these stories, and my own experience.. I will definitely not be drinking(except for maybe 1 or 2) again.

I've been taking 20mg of Lexapro for a few months now. The first time I drunk on Lexapro I spewed multiple times and my stomach burned so much, I couldn't move for 5 hours and my mates called the ambulance for me (first time i'm ever puked while drinking)

Second time, I spewed yet again.

etc. I get drunk after about 2-3 standard drinks comparable to on Citalopram I could have about 9-12 standard drinks and be fine.

Last night I went out, had 4 bacardi's, a nice stodgy dinner (which ended up in the toilet bowl could you believe?)

Also Lexapro gives me bad stomach aches and toileting issues,,, I also get panic attacks when drinking caffeine and alcohol at the same time.

I give it a major WARNING. I think i'm going to abstain from drinking until I get these horrible pills changed!

OMG!! The same thing happens to me! Are you still taking this meds?

I think it depends on when you are taking it. I had this problem as well, when I first started and then switched to a morning dose. Now I seem to sleep through the night. Although, everyone is different.

Every doctor in the world will tell you it's a poor choice to drink while on Lexapro. Alcohol is a depressant so if you are attempting to battle depression alcohol is going to make the decision worse. I know this message board is convenient way of asking medical questions and getting feedback, but the doctors opinion is the only one you should probably listen to. My advice ask whoever prescribed it.

Don't do it. Sure you can have a few, but from what I am reading, I'm sure the amounts of alcohol you can consume without any effects has to do with your dosage. I am on 20mg of lexapro and by drink 3 I am on the floor. I black out more frequently and cannot remember things from the night before. The blackouts are so bad I have even wet the bed in my sleep. Mind you, that sort of thing never happened to me before I started the medication. Ultimately, alcohol and SSRIs don't mix!!

I've been on lexapro on and off for a few years now. I've always experienced blackouts way too easily. After only a few drinks to where I'm only feeling tipsy, I've still had blackouts. I basically stopped drinking because always blacking out was potentially dangerous and it was never any fun to not remember anything the next day. It wasn't until recently that I realized this all started happening around the time that I started lexapro. I do believe that lexapro can easily cause blackouts. I just stopped taking it, but have not tried drinking yet, so we'll see if it's any better!

Just wanted to share what happened to me last night.

have been on lexapro 10 mg for 3 years now. Went to my boyfriends house last night and had a glass and a half of rum and coke. That it- that's all I remember. Woke up in the hospital with my mom crying at me.

BAC was .224. Impossible! From less than 2 drinks?! So I started researching and found info about a study done - 19 FDA reports that showed proof of an increase of BAC while taking the drug Lexapro. By the way I'm a nurse.

And for those of you being prescribed more than 10mg- the FDA has only approved it for 10mg- nothing higher-Doctors' will prescribe higher- but know that there has been no research or studies done above that FDA approved level.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Cheers

I've been on 20mg of lexpro for a few weeks and I went to a concert forgetting to take it that day but I took it the day before so it was still in my system. My friends and I were drinking Captain Morgan. We were taking shots and drinking from a water bottle we poured it into. I had a lottt to drink and I was drinking even more because I was drunk. We were in the car driving to the concert and I remembered being able to control myself. I sat on my friends lap and then all of a sudden I appeared in a room backstage with my one friend helping me out. I had no idea what was going on. I blacked out again and came back to reality sometime later. My friend was gone and I was with a nurse telling me that they called my house and I was being picked up. I was so confused because I had no idea what happened. The next day I didn't really have much of a hangover. I talked to my friends and they told me security wouldn't even let me into the concert. They also told me I was doing very strange things. I didn't remember most of the night. I was blacked out but still conscious and moving and talking to people. It wasn't my typical drunk. I've drank that much before and blacked out but the things that I did when I was blacked out were very different than the blackouts I had on lexapro. It was like I wasnt myself. My friend told me it was almost as if I was tripping. I also didn't throw up at all so I had all the alcohol in the the whole time and I wouldn't sober up like you should after a few hours. it was like I was getting worse. It might've been because I have drank so much I don't know. All I know is my first experience drinking on lexapro was not a good one.

Glad to find this. I started taking Lexapro 8 months ago. Never used to black out and have quite the tolerance. Now a couple of drinks in and the things my friends tell me that I do sound completely unlike me. This recently got me in trouble at a work function where I told off the VP of a partner company. I have no recollection of it and it's not something I would ever do normally, even when intoxicated.

It is used to treat depression and other anxiety disorders. Works by increasing the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. An extremely high amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin, however can cause toxic effects.
