My wife has gone through with a Cesarean almost five years back. Since then she is having swelling in her lower back…..We initially consulted the relevant doctors and told them about this swelling and permanent numbness of lower back portion but they didn’t took it seriously and said it’s a normal thing and will go by time……
Now its more than five years she is still having lower back swelling and now the situation is very bad…..she is having very frequent attacks of body numbness….I would rather call it paralyses. During these attacks one or more body parts gets completely paralyzed…she is unable to move it at all ….and most of the time she feels very severe pain……..Some time she is unable to even open her eyes…….
To tell you the truth for last five years I was not aware that this numbness condition is because of the lower back swelling……..some of the doctors gave her calcium for so many months …..some of them recommended neurobian tables and injection. In recent past one of the doctors advised that this is due to this lower back problem……he believes that during the operation while given the injection the Anesthetist has damage the lower back portion…..and due to that damage she is having this swelling and nerves are getting pressed and creating all these problems. I spoke to different Anesthetists and they completely denied this claim and said lower back injections cannot cause such type of damage…….
We are completely lost……..her condition is very bad and doctors are recommending surgery……but I am still not clear about the root cause……..I want to know what investigation or tests can be done to conclude the root cause of this problem…….I am scared of spinal surgery it is always a very risky business and if we do it because of wrong diagnosis …it will be the worst thing……
I will really appreciate any guidance in this regard.
Hi:
It sounds like nerve damage to me. You may be running up against a "code of silence" with the anesthesiologists. That's unfortunate. I have two C Sections and my worst memory of the who experience is the epidural. I had one of the originators of the procedure and he had A LOT of trouble getting it done. Terrible......Nerve damage is tricky. Did you consult a nerve specialist ( a CNS doctor). It sounds like you've gotten second and third opinions, but if not, do so. I would go to a hospital that is extremely reputable in many areas of medicine, not a community hospital. Preferably a teaching hospital. See what they think......Good luck to you.
