I'm 22, smoker, ang roughly 40 lbs over weight. Ihave just recently started experiencing all of the problems that you all have posted about. About 2 weeks ago while driving to my house, I began having shortness of breath, mild chest cramps on the left side of my chest, and a fast irregular heart beat.. it got to the point that I had to call 911. They checked me out and claimed that all of my vitals were only slightly out of the norm. Later that day I was able to see my doctor, who explained to me that he was certain that this was an anxiety episode, and it is nothing to be worried about. Now.... at night I am starting to experience the heavy heart beat, short breath, leg, foot, and arm numbness, and as of tonight, a pressure on the left side of my head..

Well I got to this forum by searching "rapid heart rate while sleeping at night" in google

I am 26 year old indian guy with 97 Kgs and 5 feet 11 inches tall.

I have recently started facing this problem but since last year I was diagnosed with depression and high blood pressure around 130/90. I was on high blood pressure pills and some ant- anxiety pills to overcome anxiety. For last 1 month I was been feeling no pressure or stress and was sleeping on time and even stopped taking my medications. I was going through this forbia that i will die with heart attack.

I am an software professional and works from home and recently I have some pending work issues but they are not major but they run in background of my mind and even if I want to sleep they seems to over in my conscious mind and recently when I try to ly down for sleep I feel my heart is beating faster than normal I can feel the beat my placing my hand on my chest...its so loud. It scares me and I dont seems to like nights anymore...and when I walk outside in fresh air listening music from my ipod I feel better and then once naturally tired..i go to bed for sleep..

I have noticed if I have sex or masturbate I feel more relaxed and sleeps naturally...this is all weird happening...I had a history where I fellt that I will die with my heart condition and i am almost scare of dooing heavy physical work. I was also tired of taking those pills which makes me feel low in the morning...like no energy at all.

I have noticed a nother thing...last month when I was socially active and was doing conversation with people I was not having any symptons and was not taking any medication also. I was also taking walks every evening and morning followed by good diet and some exercises mentioned below. I want to share that people like you can also benefit..becoz I know how scary this is..since i have experienced it myself.

Some observations that worked for me but I need to be consistent:
May me my doctor is actually right
1)I need to take 20 minutes walk in the park everyday in morning and evening. (don't run...just walk naturally but with consistent and comfortable speed). It keeps everything in balanced..your body acids, sugar and blood thickness..
2) Don't exercise too much or do any cardio work outs atleast for 6 months
3) Eat fibre rich food and drink lot of water- a lot of water till you have non-yellow urine and consume garlic in your diet. Garlic capsules or
fresh garlic crush juice keep your blood thin and its only to keep low pressure on your arteries when your heart rate goes high.
4) Eat all 3 - 4 meals ...include more vegetables....if you skip your meal..you will have acidity and even headaches and feel low in engery as well. which is not good for your current problem of anxiety.
5) Avoid citric juices or fruit juices....instead eat fruits by chewing them not more than 1 a meal.
6) Increase a little bit of social activity with calm and relax people....
7) talk to your friends or family people..share your problems with people who are positive in nature and calm as well and dont blame you for your problems...we dont need that.
8) Avoid conversation with people that you don't like for a while....most probably avoid people who shout or always mad at you for no reason.
if you cannot control avoiding them, then give less care to what they say...use more smiles....
9) Dont do any conscious breathing exercises which are more dangerous and may increase to much of consciousness for your heart beat even if it is normal. So Take lessons from proper indian yoga trainer they teach you do proper stress relieving exercise but do this post 3-4 months of the above things.
10) Do activities that makes you happy like hanging out with your mates or anyone whom can calm you with good talks....but avoid to much anxious action or thriller or horror movies only for few months....because currently you are already too anxious because of your scary symptoms of rapid heart rate.
11) Add a joke book in your list and read them whenever you are free

The above all steps will help you to overcome the problem permanent thats what my personal doctor is so confident about...he has done a lot of research on this and has improved hundreds of people's life.

I am promising myself to be consistent in above and get back to normal once again just how i was in last month.

In order to stop such numerous thoughts to hover your mind, you should learn to shutdown your brain and body system before going to sleep.
1) sit in a relax condition with fresh air around
2) press your eyes and ears with your palms.
3) after pressing eyes, close them and then finally close your ears with fingers
4) no need for conscious breathing, just talk to your organs like heart, lungs and brain and calm them each while saying them that everything is well and you all can do everything alright and that you trust their functioning.
5) Connect to the above universe as a imagination and ask for the power to shutdown your system
5) press your eyes with your palms again and slowly open your eyes
6) now sleep on your right side for couple of months after this and go to bed (make sure you consume atleast 2 glasses of water before bed)
7) good night for now

Morning
1) No need for alarms..throw them..(you can ask permission from your HR department for some medical leave for couple of hours if you wake up late). In time your body will adjust and you can control when to wake up unless you are too tired.
2) Dont get up immediately from bed and dont stand up fast or jumping from your bed.
3) Sit in your bed and close your eyes with palms and connect to universe above in imagination and start your body system and have a beautiful day ahead.

I will update you all with any new things that might help me and you all.

ONE IMPORTANT THING...IF YOU ARE AGED BETWEEN 25 - 45 OR YOUNGER, there is nothing absoluetly to worry about we are not having severe condition...as someone already said here that when our mind never stops thinking even if our body is tired, your heart rate goes high to wake you up just like a alarm that wakes you up to do your important work like going office or gymn or getting your kids ready for school...

Stay Happy...dont go around looking for post on internet just like what i did..i should control it...but seriously internet is a boon but equally dangerous to increase anxiety unless you find a post that confirms its normal what you are going through..or if some weird post may increase your anxiety to worst.

I am sorry for my english but I needed to this , I thinking if it helped me, it will help you all as well and what I have suggested is not even close to any health risks...I am feeling relieved after posting this.

Hi

I'm replying to all of you, but particularly to Guest because I have the exact same feeling you are describing particularly when you say that you feel like your heart stops and then beats really fast and that it happens when you go to sleep. I too am afraid to sleep sometimes out of fear that I will stop breathing and die. I have been awakened in the middle of the night and had to take a deep breath in as though i had not had one in a few minutes. those moments scare me espeically at my age, which is 28. i do have a considerable amount of stress right now and im not really sure if i am handeling it very well. Although most times I feel fine untill I am confronted with something i am trying to avoid, which brings on anxiety. Also like you, I do feel lonely and i don't know if that is part of my anxiety. I hope you keep writing because i know no one else who has the same symptoms and it comforting to know you do (even though I wish you didnt')

also i get a sharp pain in my chest which goes all the way to my upper back (left side)..
. i went to the ER...my heart beat was perfect, oxygen levels perfect, EKG perfect........????? what can this be?????? my doctor said i was having a MUSCLE SPASM?! doesn't make sense to me....
reading all the posts above, the only answer that makes sense to me was of the person who mentioned something about the vale vessel episodes...i am going to look into that thank you so much...tmrw im going to the doctor again, i went to the ER today and my blood pressure was extremely low ...again these r my current symptoms

i suppose i'm a few years late, but i really hope one of you will get this. i have been suffering from almost all of the same symptoms that are detailed here for about 15 months. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS SHOWN PROGRESS!!!!!

so here's my story, i'll try to keep it as brief as possible:

on easter of 2009, i took a pill of what was supposed to be ecstacy. i had taken pure MDMA (ecstacy) before, which, regardless of what you're told, is relatively safe in moderation. however this sure as hell wasn't MDMA. i still don't know what it was exactly, but it was some type of very very harsh, slightly psychedelic stimulant unlike anything i had experienced before. it was mostly unpleasant, but i got through it. my real problem didn't start until the next day, when after smoking a little bit of pot, i thought i was having a heart attack for a good 20 minutes. my mom was born with wolff-parkinson-white syndrome (a heart defect) so i decided to play it safe and go to the ER to make sure i didn't inherit it from her. long story short: they never found anything wrong with my heart, even after several EKGs, a halter monitor that i wore for 3 days, an ultrasound, and a treadmill stress test (although they picked up one of the abnormally "hard beats" on that one, they said it was harmless).

after it was established that nothing was wrong with my heart, i concluded that i must be having panic attacks.. and sure enough, the anxiety medication xanax was a cure-all for me. it relieved every single symptom, from the fear of dying, to the palpitations, shortness of breath, strange sensations, numbness, sleeplessness, you name it. i felt completely normal when i was on it, even when i was ready to call 911 less than an hour prior. the problem is xanax can cause dependency, and i began to fear that maybe i was having panic attacks just from coming off of it. so i weened myself off of it using a natural supplement called GABA, which is also a neurotransmitter found in your brain that prevents seizures. its very fast acting, you feel the effects of the chewable tablets in 10 minutes as opposed to 45-60 for xanax. so i hope that may help someone..

its been exactly a year since the last time i took xanax, and almost as long since i've taken GABA, so clearly i've been doing a decent job of living with this problem. but the fact remains that going to sleep at night just isn't what it used to be, and i'm still not quite myself and frankly this upsets me. there were many times that i cried because i felt like an empty shell of my former self; i feared that i had brain damage. it does feel good to know that so many other people have this same problem, and i'm sure its not brain damage since not all of you do drugs. clearly my problem is stimulant-induced; a friend of mine developed anxiety/panic attack disorder from abusing adderall, which is a pharmaceutical amphetamine. i never had a panic attack before that pill, i never even really had depression before that. i'd like to think i was 100% mentally sound before this happened. i guess the root of my problem is a chemical inbalance, and perhaps some people are just born with it. i just don't want to be medicated on xanax for the rest of my life, which is why i've endured hell instead. that can't be the only solution, right? any info would be appreciated more than i could express, and hopefully this helps somebody.

I had all the same things pretty much as others have posted, and i think it's psychological, cuz when i'm not thinking about it (ie. drunk or just forget) i rarely have the heavy heart beat. As soon as I start noticing it more and more it increases. Something interesting btw that a doctor told me once, is you can't consciously stop your own heart...i dunno why but this relaxed me so when i sleep i know it shouldn't matter whether or not i focus on the random heartbeats. helps me forget them and stop worrying.. I still get the random beats now and again but when i go a while without focusing on them they go away.

Also, it helps to: obviously get more rest, no coffee, maintain jogging at least every second day, less chocolate, deep breathing excercises, clear nostrils for "easy relaxed breathing", drinking Lots of Water, and sleeping in different positions.

No doctor seems concerned and i've never heard of someone young actually dying from a heart attack really, so we should all be good...

Hope something here helps.

I've been sitting here at 2:10am panicing that i was gonna die from all these symptoms, which have been happening for a long time but have been especially bad tonight, one of those "id rather stay awake than risk that again" nights, im sure some of you know what im talking about. I just read the gas blocking the nerve post, so I forced myself to burp, and the numbness and strange beatings lessened! Whether or not that was actually the problem or a nice mental placebo effect, im at least not one foot out the door to the ER anymore so I thank you for that.

I have experienced the strong heartbeat, numbness and tingling, and jolting awake. I had 2 decrease my thyroid meds. GET YOUR THYROID CHECKED!! It's a simple blood test. Have them do TSH, T3 AND T4. Good luck.

YOU SHOULD ALL GET YOUR THYROID CHECKED. The thyroid glands regulate the adrenal glands and affect sleep, mood, metabolism, allergic reactions, and more. When I don't sleep for an entire night, and have tingling/numbness, jolting awake, and feel a strong heartbeat, I cut my thyroid meds in half and the next night I sleep like a normal person. Good luck!

My symptoms are very similar although when i start to fall asleep i get numb almost over my whole body and my arms fall asleep. I do jolt awake again usually but sometimes i fall asleep anyways and then jolt awake later, totally out of breath, cold sweat on the back of my neck, totally light headed like i am going to pass out. Does anyone else have these more severe symptoms? Not just tingling but total numbness and feeling like you are about to pass out?

I have been having similar symptoms as described here the last few months. I am a 26 year old male, and I believe that the problems have been triggered by the severe pain that I am having as a result of problems with my knees. Before these sleep symptoms started, I had been having pain in my knees for months. Then, over a period of probably just a few days, one of my knees rapidly deteriorated to the point that I could barely walk. I woke up from the pain in middle of the night, and I was focusing on my knee. Suddenly, I started to feel tingling in my extremities. I then began to run through my mind what could be happening. As I mulled over my situation, my heart began to pound rapidly in my chest, and my chest began to feel tight. I then become lightheaded. I got out of bed, and despite the pain from my knees, I ran downstairs and sat on the sofa. I pondered whether or not I should call for an ambulance. I really believed that I was perhaps on the doorstep of death. Then it dawned on me. I was having a panic attack!

It was the first one I had ever had, so I really didn't know what to expect. Apparently, many people will go to the ER as a result of thinking that they are having a heart attack. I would suggest to anyone on here with these symptoms that they are likely facing a situation of severe anxiety or panic disorder. The good news is that you won't die from this. The bad news is that it can last for a long time without relief. Once it happens the first time, you start to fear the situations that caused the attack. So, for example, when I am lying in bed trying to sleep, I will start to feel slight feelings related to the panic attack. The mind the focuses in on these sensations. This results in a cascading effect where you start to fear the symptoms more and more, which results in more symptoms, since these symptoms are driven by fear and anxiety in the first place.

I think the first step to dealing with these symptoms is to reassure yourself that you're not going to die. What I often do when I start to get worse symptoms, or if I'm jolted out of sleep, is to sit up in bed and try to breathe normally. This will calm you down fairly quickly. Keep repeating to yourself that you are fine and that you're not going to die.

I've had many of the other symptoms reported on this thread as well. Random pains in my chest, a feeling a lightheadedness, tingling, tightness in the chest, and lots of other symptoms. You don't feel "all there". Do some research on panic attacks. You will find that these are all symptoms of that disorder.
