I just switched to a new shrink today and was told that the use of marijuana has a negative effect on lamictal and actually counteracts what the drug is supposed to do. I have been puffing tough for 11 years daily and the shrink who prescribed it made no mention of this. Can anyone shed light on what is correct? Does my new shrink have a hidden agenda against marijuana?

i have heard the same thing myself, although i cannot say completely that the ganj doesnt make it work at all. ive been puffin for 7 and ive stopped takin it a few times, leaving myself in a much worse state than before.. do you have any idea about the effects of alcohol or any other substances?

from what my doctor said it just increases the effects of alcohol. so for me its usually a pint of beer that would get me a lil tipsy, but now its half.
you gotta kinda try it out tho, basically just relearn your limits.
hope that helps.

I am a 16 yr old who is very active in marching band and other musical activities and am in excellent physical shape. I have officially begun the fifth week (100 mg) of taking it and have smoked a little on and off with it since I started taking it. I am getting tested on November 19th so for all I know until they stop testing me after this weekend this should be the last time I smoke pot if not forever for a long time. One thing though is that the cravings have decreased IMMENSELY! I no longer have the same cravings as I used to. The one thing I have noticed is mild to severe depression after smoking while on Lamictal in my case. Although today I am about to go buy some but the thing is I might not smoke it. I feel no need to or reason too. I just went through a terrible break-up and I almost became dependent on marijuana to try to stabilize my moods. IT DOES NOT BY ANY MEANS DO ANYTHING POSITIVE WHILE ON ANTI-DEPRESSANTS OR MEDICINE FOR ANXIETY!!! I am currently off of my anti-depressant/anxiety meds so I can only use that as the reason why I am smoking still. As for getting clean. They sell the lipton green tea and white tea with cranberry and it has added anti-oxidants on top of everything else and drinking three of those a day plus lots of water I believe should get my system clean in time.

I just started taking lamictal today. only 25 mg which is completely harmless since you have to build up gradually. I felt completely fine all day but it was giving me extremely severe menstrual cramps. I smoked a very small bowl to alleviate the cramps and to help me take a quick nap before having to go to work a few hours later. I smoke the same amount daily and this time, while I was trying to doze off, I started hearing voices/music and things got really loud. I panicked and opened my eyes and I literally couldn't see anything at all--it was like I was trapped in this dimension of angry noise and fear. I think I may have started having an anxiety attack for the first time in my life. Anyway, I did manage to wake up and snap out of it and take an uneasy nap for a half hour. Then when I got up to work, I went to the bathroom and started having severe chills and sweat and dizziness. I couldn't get up from the toilet because I was so dizzy. When I finally did, I was putting in my contacts and my vision went so fuzzy and then I went blind again and had to sit down because the room started spinning. Needless to say, I had to call in sick with a really weird excuse as to why I suddenly got sick an hour before work. Perhaps the chills are because of my extremely severe menstrual cramps (which often results in dizziness and feverish chills) but the hearing voices and vision issues are definitely because of the lamictal/marijuana combination. I am aware that 25 mg is NOTHING but when I combined it with marijuana the result for me was hell. Everybody is different and maybe some people are ok smoking, but I would never want to experience this feeling again and will avoid smoking pot like the plague if I continue to take lamictal.

I've been taking lamictal For 5 months(100mg I weight 120lbs 16yrs. Old
...male I also take 30mg of adderal) and lately marijuana has completely counteracted everything lamictal does for me ... I used to smoke once a month if that but since I've started it's been almost every day .. Since then my bipolar symptoms have gotten alot worst and I feel like I'm falling right back to where I was so from my experiences I think it really does cancel out the meds but that's just me...i may just have to up my dosage but for now Im going to try and fight the insane craving I have for bud.

Hey everyone. I'm a first year vet student who's been on lamictal forever, and weed for a while before that. I made the mistake of mixing the two (after getting some alcohol in me for a friend's birthday and going to a random house party where I didn't know anyone). Anyway, the results were NOT good. Weed has always done weird things to me (it's hallucinogenic for me), but this was horrible. I was trying to put my pharmacology knowledge to use, and came across this thread. As far as I know (and I'm just a first year so DON'T take me too seriously because I may not be accurate on this), marijuana stimulates nerves. I'm sure you've all heard of dopamine which stimulates nerves and marijuana prevents dopamine from being removed so the dopamine continually stimulates the nerve. Lamotrigine (lamictal) blocks sodium channels which inhibits nerves. So essentially the lamictal is decreasing the activity of the nerve while the weed is increasing it and both are doing this in different places. I hit the most awful depression (haven't had that in years since being on lamictal), and I am hoping that it hasn't hurt my grades to the point of having to repeat. So for those of you who are curious, that's what I think is happening, and I highly recommend you either survive on lamictal or on weed, but not both!

Alright. Im a sixteen year old high school student. Everyone on here has said nothing but negative reactions. I've been smoking marijuana for over a year on a regular basis. Ever since I have started on lamictal I have not seen one bad reaction whatsoever. The only difference is that Im more of a light weight now. by a lot. so i only need a little bit to get me where i want to be. ive been on it for about six months, and smoked regularly since then. So i dont know if you are also taking other drugs that mixed bad. And also if you mix it with alcohol and weed. The possibility of a seizure comes from the alcohol more than weed. I use weed to keep my back from hurting because i have skulliosous. Also my hands are always shaking from natural nervousness and when i smoke my body actually calms down. I havent even noticed a change in heart rate. I just get the relaxing feeling and the happy feeling. I mean i still feel other emotions when i smoke. I just dont dwell on the negative in my life. So either you are all weird and i highly doubt the majority is the weird group. So im probably one of the lucky ones that still can smoke without a bad reaction. So for myself, Im still gonna smoke till the day i die.

I have been on lamictal for my epilepsy for 4 years now and just smoked for the first time last month. I felt fine while I was high but the next day was awful. i felt like I was slipping into my seisures all day. Needless to say, if I ever smoke again I am doing on a day where I have had either my full dosage for the day or where I dont have to do anything the next day.

Ok so I smoked when I switched from lamictal 75 mg to 100 mg. I drank one four loco (which somehow got me sh*t faced) and I had to go to the ER. My body has the most unusual reaction with lamictal ever seen at this hospital. My body obsorbed the alcohol so fast by the time I whent to the ER two hours after I had drank there was no alcohol in my blood system. Yet I was inebriated beyond believe and was having seizure like symptoms as well as easily becoming hypothermic. I had an eregularheart beat dangerously high blood pressure and dangerously low blood sugar. My body was dehydrated though I had been constantly drinking water and is had eaten an hour before so the low blood sugar was unusual as well. It caused such bad anxiety plus the reactions to everything else and caused swelling in my brain which resulted in unusual bruising unexplained, rashes, bleeding sores, depressin and worsened anxiety I have been to the hospital in and out all week. I'm n cortisone and with the after effects of everything else it caused extreme nausea, food goes straight through me, that causes dehydratin as well, and unusual eating feelings I'm starving all the time like super starving while the thought of food disgusts me completely to the point of wanting to vomit. Lamictal and marajuanna especially mixed with alcohol can not only be lethal but expensive, and uncomfortable. Please don't do it together im still sick as f**k and I've missed a week of school already I'm going to have perminant scars from the sores and I'm dizzy as hell every single second of every single day.

Truly with all due respect you are 16. Your definition of weird comes from a very small well of experience which really puts you at a disadvantage to share any wisdom. People are looking for some solid answers not your naive assumptions. Let me know how your life of smoking works out for you. I believe you will have a completely different perspective by then.

I've been on 150mg Lamotrigine (Lamictal) for about 5 months now. About a month ago I smoked about a bowl and had to go to the ER... I felt like I was having a seizure; it was terrifying. My heart was racing, vision blurry, blacked out, my whole body was shaking like crazy. I thought I was going to die. It was like a heart attack. I felt so heavy and like my heart was going to explode. I had smoked before being on the medication and was, to me, fine. Calm, happy, lazy, etc.
So here's the prelude: before starting the medication (Lamotrigine) I used to smoke very occasionally. Once I started Lamotrogine I stopped smoking until about a month and a half before the ER incident. I started out slow, only smoking a little about once a week until I got up to like a bowl once every 3 days. Not much at all. But I didn't feel good when I smoked... For about the first 3 hours of being high I'd get really bad stomach cramps, my heart would race, I'd tremble, and my blood circulation would be really bad. (I'd blackout from standing too fast and my hands and toes got really cold). After at least 3 hours of all that it would taper off but still be uncomfortable to say the least. I could get high but it didn't feel very good. I'd be paranoid too and get headaches. I'm not sure why I kept smoking really.. It was like each time I would smoke those feelings would get more noticeable and worse. Till it finally got to the ER incident... The paramedics had to inject me with some anti anxiety medicine to get me to stop shaking. But really I just had to wait it out. It was the most terrifying experience I think I'll ever have.
A few days ago I tried smoking again. Half to see if it was just an isolated experience and half because I'm an id**t I suppose.. But I had the same reaction as the ones I had when first trying it on medication.
MY HYPOTHESIS / BOTTOM LINE: If you're on Lamotrigine (Lamictal), don't smoke marijuana. Period. Especially if you have experienced anything like what I have. The symptoms build up. I know that the combination has a negative effect on my body. I just really hope none are permanent.
