Correction: Anyone who applies their singular experience as a concrete label for everyone else's is quite simply (and more honestly) put, a fool. Mental health can have a physical impact as well. Likewise, mental withdrawal symptoms may very well manifest into physical ones as well, though they aren't physically harmful like other drugs' physical withdrawals.

I'm day 39 after smoking 24 years constantly, 44 years old. I'm right with you on the sleep thing and suggest you talk to your doctor about Gabaprentin. I take a very low dose (either 300 or 600 mg) about 1 hour before bed which allows me to sleep through the night and feel great. Without it, I will sleep 3-4 hours and feel lousy. With the low dose I am taking, I am not risking dependence or withdrawal. I've also been attending AA and MA meetings to help keep myself straight. Good luck with the sleep and staying off the weed, it's worth it!!!

You are wrong about sex though: There are lots of chemicals involved in sex; THAT'S why it's addictive. You don't just "feel good" without changes in brain chemistry, whether it's induced by something outside the body being taken in or something inside the body that's being released through stimulation.

i smoke weed everyday. Have two kids, a house a car. Im 24 years old living in a place where its hard to make it due to the economy. Everything is expensive here. Now i know that sounds quite contradictory. "How can he complain about the economy but still be spending money on weed"? Well, simple answer. Weed has gotten me to where i am. Everyone keeps putting down weed because of its so called side effects. What about its positives. I understand people reading this are trying to quit. Good for you. If you do quit then you will have some more money in your pocket. But money is not everything. Sometimes smoking weed brings you closer to family. Sometimes it relieves anxiety rather than causing it. Unless you are experiencing negative vibes when smoking then why are you quitting. Dont let popular opinion of pot bring you down and make you quit. You can be successful and still smoke weed. And as far as " physical dependencies" on marijuana are concerned, try doing anything everyday for more than a year and see how your body reacts when you dont do it anymore. Try drinking soda everyday for a year and then quit. Guarantee you will be feeling something "physical". Sweating and having nightmares may occur. But dying from smoking pot will never happen. No one has ever overdosed. No one has ever died from withdrawal. Can we say the same about every other drug or alcohol. No. Cant even say the same for one of them. My advice to you is, if you think you have a physical dependency on pot, then more than likely you have an addictive personality. And the last thing you want to do is quit and then remedy the withdrawals with alcohol. You would just be opening a whole new can of worms. How do you expect to quit alcohol with its " real physical withdrawals" and or death as a side effect. Try loving a person for a year. Then they leave. You cry. Thats physical. Or you feel "depressed". People go through physical and emotional withdrawals all the time for everything. Literally stuff that we have to do in life every day will lead to distress either emotionally or physically. Everything has a cause and effect. Sweating and being irritable are not signs that you are physically dependent on anything. It means youve gotten used to something and your "brain" has to find a way to revert its thinking back to before you ever did that. My sister was and maybe even still is an alcoholic. Im disgusted at the way alcohol is so readily available for everyone but a god damn plant that grows in the dirt is illegal. And its the people that fail to realize that its the habit of doing something and getting accustomed to it that cause the way you feel, that leads to the false "opinion" that weed should be illegal. But honestly i dont see anything that occurs naturally in your body when you do healthy things like run and sleep as being a " physical withdrawal". Running a fever, getting the shakes, vomiting, those are withdrawals. Not sweating while you are sleeping. Thats your body cleansing itself, not asking for more. So relax. Quit smoking if you want. But literally only if you want. Because its the habit that will get you. Not the weed. And for the people that say im stupid and sh*t like that. I have my journeyman electrical license and have 4 years of school for that. After high school. Yes i graduated. Would i have ever been able to do that on heroin or alcohol? Which are two of the leading causes in death in overdose. No. And im not just trying to brag. Im trying to give hope to all marijuana users. If it doesnt hurt anyone in your family dont change the way you are. Conforming only leads to destruction. Dont fix something when its not broke. Whats broke is our legal system. Millions if not billions have been spent by pharmaceutical companies, you know the people that make the pills you get from your doctor, on fighting the legalization of weed. You know why? Because weed is not addicting. Pills are. Educate yourself people. Weed is the only thing that you can medicate with and not overdose. Literally. Take too much tylenol and you might die. More than likely it would take a lot. But still. All you have to do is watch one video of a kid having 100 seizures a day. Then watch when they medicate with marijuana. Maybe a handful of seizures. That kid has a life now. I brand new life. But hold on. Fred from the pharmaceutical company thinks his pills are the best option. So little billy with the seizures takes the pill instead. Guess what. Now he doesnt eat because he has no appetite. He still has 50 plus seizures a day. And he has to scarf down 10 pills every 4 hours. On an empty stomach of course. Now he has a stomach problem. He gets more pills for that. See the cycle people? You see commercials for pills.... may cause stroke heart attack, vomiting. All kinds of truly bad things. Want to hear weeds "side effects"? Healthier appetite, raised metabolism, better outlook on life, you know things that youd expect from natural medication. Not man made BS. This whole rant is probably off topic but someone has got to put weed in its rightful place. Alongside every great accomplishment our country has ever achieved will be the legalization of marijuana and the salvation of american life as we know it for so many families on pills. Quitting marijuana is more of a lifestyle change than anything. Dont feel guilty for a habit. Good luck to all and hopefully this has helped people in one way or another

Your absolutely wrong, not everyone gets addicted to drinking who drink everyday. I quit and layed in fetal position and didn't eat a thing for 3 days and if I did I threw it up. I know your just going to say it's all in my head and your right, it's called chemical dependency and for some it can occur on an extreme level even with weed. Just be glad it doesent happen to you and get off of this blog this is for people who are looking for advice not for some ignorant person to say your all crazy.

Highly do not recommend doing xanax it's in some ways more addicting then heroine ... weed is unique and there's no other drug you can do without negative effects on your health and addiction .. weed is not addicting and If addiction occurs the symptoms only last a couple days and they aren't as severe

First there seems to be a difference in opinion about the addictive nature/ withdrawal symptoms in weed. I think there needs to be several things defined.
1. What weed are you smoking? -c**p street weed is around 5 -10% THC while medicinal pot can range from 10%-25% THC thus providing the user with very different experiences if they smoke the same amount. Also, those that smoke wax are smoking something that is around 60-80% THC so again a very different experience.

2. How much are you smoking in a day. (actual amount) I have friends that can smoke .1 of a gram and get hi, that is their "sesh" but I have grower friends that can smoke up to an 1/8 in a blunt with one or two other people.

3. What went into the growing of the weed? Are you ingesting other chemicals because the grower did not flush out the plants of nutrients before harvesting?

I have smoked for well over 10 yrs now and I never had a problem quitting (yes, I had hot flashes, yes I lost weight and had a very diminished appetite, and a lack of sleep) the withdrawals were real but bearable. For the last two years I have had a medical card and have had access to free weed (ranging 18-25%THC) and wax.

This time around quitting has been super hard. I have horrible night sweats, anxiety, and depression/ ptsd symptoms. I have been practicing birkam yoga for several years, but I have found that the practice really helps with my night sweats. I sweat much more in class than I did before, but it helps cut down on my night sweats. The weight loss thing really isn't a negative for me as I am perpetually 20lbs away from my goal weight. But I do have to set alarms to remind me to eat, otherwise I get nausea and have to fight throwing up.
I also, take a lavender bath, read a book and warm tea at night to help me sleep... I toss and turn a lot still but it helps.

Lastly, I have been meditating and taking a variety of supplements.
1. Magnesium- I use to use it to relax my muscles for TMJ, but it helps for this too
2. Vitamin D- Im in Portland Or so the D helps lift my spirits
3. Ginseng- A dispensary worker told me it would help with the sweats and it does a little, but it does make me feel better in general.

Hope this helps others like me... I feel like in many ways quitting pot is the most difficult, because people see it as a joke, but the effects of constantly being high are real and slowly degrade the quality of life.
Good luck to all!!

As a Dr. you should know better than to tell some one Marijuana is not physically addictive. You are basing this off of old research done when marijuana thc content was low (between 7-10%). Marijuana these days is ranges anywhere from 10-30% thc and IS both physically and psychologically addictive. DO NOT listen to this "Dr." The withdrawals from marijuana are very real both physically and psychologically. This "Dr." probably has never been through withdrawals him/herself and is just throwing out what they have read in texts. Is some one has an addictive personality, it exasperates the psychological withdrawal symptoms even more. Overall, it is absolutely offensive and INCORRECT to say that marijuana has no physical withdrawal symptoms.
