Hi - I'm on my 2nd Mirena, first 1 not a problem until June last year, 3 months before I was due to have it removed and I bled for the 1st time in 5 years (fitted due to heavy and prolonged periods), I went to see my Dr, different practice to where it was fitted, and she said that it would suggest it need changing. The next bit was my mistake, I went to the local FP clinic and it was horrendous, I've never had strings to check, but had an ultra sound so new it was in place. The Consultant said my Dr was stupid and of course there was nothing wrong then dug around blindly for 10 minutes trying to find it, then declared it wasn't there and I was possibly pregnant (at this point she became friendly, and if I was pregnant, imagined that she would have damaged the baby). Following this, sent home with pregnancy test and a bag full of condoms. When I returned a week later, not pregnant, the wonderful new doctor, with ultrasound and anisthetic removed the coil and replaced it, absolutely no problem there. Now a year later I have started with light bleeding, happend twice lasted a week each time - not overly concerned, but does anyone think I should be concerned enough to seek advice?

I have had my IUD for about 1and 1/2 years and I hate it. Have hated it ever since it was put in. Painful from the start and has not stopped. I bleed every time my husband and I have sex. I cramp constantly and sometimes it hurts so much we can't have sex. It is a constant source of pain if you are contemplating getting one DON"T!!!!! It isn't worth the risk of having this happen to you. I lost my medical insurance and can't go to the dr. but as soon as I am able it is out.

I had my son in January 2007 and had my IUD placed shortly after my 6 week checkup. It was not a painful instertion, but def. uncomfortable. I have not had a period since it was inserted. I may spot once or twice every few months, but usually its just for one day. My periods before becoming pregnant and getting the IUD were very heavy. I have endometriosis. My periods would last about 2 weeks, and I would have to wear a overnight pad all the time. Here I am now , I started a period. It has been going for about 6 days and shows no signs of stopping. I thought I was just spotting at first, but now it is pretty heavy. Also, when I spotted, it was always "old, brown blood" this started that way, but now it has turned into bright red blood. I will have a light flow, where I just need a pantyliner and then boom Ill have to change because it picks up and stains my clothes and I need bigger pads. Ive had the placement checked on my IUD at the doc a couple times. However, they only look for the strings. I just wonder if it has embedded itself, would the strings still appear normal??? I had an ultrasound done a few months back on my bladder and kidneys. The tech knew me and looked for my IUD. She said that she didnt see it and thought I should go to the doc. THe doc confirmed the strings were there, but that makes me wonder even more if it imbedded. Im glad that I am not the only one going through this. I may contact my doc about having this removed.
I have had a lot of weird things happen in the past few years once I got this. I have a weird skin rash that appears anytime I put pressure on my skin. anyone have any issues like that?

Ok I too have had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years. Funny that it seems everyone starts to have problems around the same time. I got mine put in June 2008. My Daughter was born in Dec. 2007. For one thing they say if you have a least one child you should be fine getting it inserted. What they don't say is if you have had 1 vaginal birth. I had c-sections with both of my children. So when I went to get it put it my doctor had to manually dialte me (had c-sections because I wouldn't dialte.) Horrible pain, bleeding for over 2 weeks, but then I was fine. I had light periods for about a year. Then I would spot once in a while. About a year and a half after getting it I was getting sharp horrible pains in my sides. They sent me for an ultra sound and found systs on my ovaries. The bleed was them popping. If they didn't pop I would have had them removed. Now I'm getting craps, periods more frequently, right now I have been bleeding on and off for over 2 weeks. I'm really emotional, my back hurts, im swelling. I just took a pregnancy test and it came up negative. My fiance sometimes feels it when we have intercourse and it sometime bruises him. I want to get it removed but I can't really take any other kind of birth control. And I'm not ready to have my tubes tied. I have to make an appt with my dr and see whats going on now. Has anyone gotten any results from there doctors yet?

I posted about a month ago about my issues. My doc ended up doing a D&C to remove mine. The strings broke and it folded up on itself. I feel like a whole new person now that it is out. I hope you guys find the relief that I have.

Oh my gosh! I'm 22 and I had the Mirena inserted in 2009. It'll amost be 2 years since ive had it in and i experience TERRIBLE cramps in my left ovary! I can't even function when i get them. I went to my doctor and they found an ovarion cyst on my right ovary? They ensured me that was the cause of the pain so i got the surgery to get it removed and i STILL get them, daily. Its so bad that the pain runs down my leg and my whole stomach area is always tender and sore, my breasts hurt and recently ive been bleeding a lot. I Bleed almost everytime i'm intimate with my boyfriend too, whats happpening to me!?

Ahhh, funny enough - here I am experiencing the same 3 year "rite of passage" you all are. My Mirena was inserted December of 2008 - its now January 2011.
Last night I woke up with horrible cramping and bleeding (something that used to happen to me pre-mirena) . This is the first time in 3 years that I have seen or felt anything remotely related to menstruation (except for when it was first inserted and I was in agony for about 2 weeks).
So, while laying in bed at 2am with cramps I decided to google "Mirena 3 years." Low and behold, look what popped up.
We're all experiencing about the same thing 3 years post insertion...there's no way this is a coincidence.

I love my Mirena and would hate to have it removed. Luckily, both my bleeding and cramping have stopped less than 24 hours later. It was just such a shock for me I had to see if anyone had similar storied. I hope its the last time it happens, but, if not - I'm heading to the doctor.
Also, anyone out there experiencing acne and night sweats? I mean clothes and sheets completely soaked. I'm wondering if this is also a side effect as I have never had acne except for the occasional blemish or two. I also have NEVER sweat at night like this....

Other things pertaining to my Mirena experience. Insertion was the most traumatic, painful thing I have ever undergone. I was 24 at the time and never had given birth. First 2 or 3 weeks were terrible - I had lots of cramping and relied heavily on pain killers. After that everything was smooth sailing. No weight gain (I have actually lost 20lbs) and my boyfriend has only commented once or twice about the strings.
Overall, I'm happy with my Mirena decision. However, this 3 year thing bleeding/cramping, night sweats and acne flare up is freaking me out.
Hopefully, it's just a temporary shift in hormones.

I have read all of yall stories ...its pretty intense..im only 19 just had my first baby n sep 2010..at the last week of november I got the iud put in.. Everything was normal ..nothing out of the regular.. My doctor said that if I didn't want no more children because I was so young I didn't want to even think about anymore kids tell the 5yrs were up.. He said that the iud was the one that more relable than the shot or than that thing that they put in arm. So I went with it.. My son four months today.. And for three days I have pelivc pain that comes and goes..day and night. Every nite I start to get so worried that I'm pregnant an I will have to have surgery or the I'm have one of those side effects that could be life threathing. What would happen to my son if somthing happen to me all because I tired to protect myself from getting pregnant again.. I so scared for mylife ... The bad thing is I just can't go to the doctor.. Like everyone does.. God I know your listening all I ask to make this iud work this one time so I can make my one child life better ... Before I bring another one to this insane world. And then I really can't make our llives better.. Be 20 with two kids that is too much for me to handle..thank you ladies for all the great advice.. If my pain does get worse.. I might just get it removed.. Sounds more safer with a shot or the thing in the arm.. Then having to worry about it growing on my uterus wall.. Now that is something you don't won't to here...

Ok, Well I as well am having "some of these issues"...This is my second Mirena IUD the first 5yr go round NO Problems at all!!! Except the insertion was PAINFUL!!!!!!!

I have had my second on now for almost a year and I am experiencing bleeding, cramping etc from time to time! I don't understand why...

I recently noticed the bleeding the day after sex...I am just wondering if that has anything to do with it???
I have considered having it removed b/c of my experiences this time??? I never thought about it much, but I do have the night sweats too and have often just thought it was age....
My Ob-Gyn acts like its no big deal...I often fear..pregnancy etc, due to the bleeding......

Any feedback would be helpful!

Hi, fellow concerned Mirena users!

First, I'd also love more follow-ups from those people who said they were planning on speaking with their doctors regarding the Mirena 3-year issues.

Second, I have also been experiencing bleeding after 3-years of having the Mirena inserted. When I first got it in fall of 2008, it was super-painful! I had heavy bleeding for around two months. Also, after about a year, I found when I lifted things, like my children, I'd get a stabbing pain in my lower left abdomen. I always wondered if it was the Mirena poking me? Eventually it would cease, but it always seems to come back the next time I lift anything. Now, usually after sex, I find light bleeding. For the first time since the initial heavy bleeding after insertion, I found the need to wear a pantyliner. This has been going on for a couple weeks, the light bleeding. More recently, I woke up sweaty and have been dealing with more severe cramping. I haven't (*knock on wood*) been experiencing the stabbing pain too much recently, but now I have the bleeding. I'm wondering if the Mirena shifted somehow? I can feel the strings (and always have). Never have had any complaints from my partner about feeling the strings.

The major life changes have been starting new jobs, moving, and buying a house. Not sure that really factors into this issue, bit probably worth a mention.

I am past due for a pap and mammogram anyway, so I'll be sure to bring it up with my new OB/GYN once I find one here in our new city!

I've been having the same problem! I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's been about 3 years since I got Mirana, and before about a month ago, I was period and cramp free. Lately I have had a non-stop period. Luckily it's not very heavy and minimal cramping, but I'm worried! I don't have health insurance at the moment and can't see a doctor. Has anyone gotten any results of why this is happening? Is it hormones? Does it mean that the IUD has shifted? My period just won't end. I'm thinking about getting it removed if this persist.
Please help!

Hey all okay so I had my iud put in after having two kids and being completely and totally a single mom. I decided I wanted to have a relationship without being worried of child number 3. And doing it all alone again. Anyway. It's been maybe 3 weeks . I bled the first day a lil from the procedure with some cramping. But then it stopped.2-3 later I got my period came on. And I have been one for over 2weeks now. I have cramping that sometimes feels like my uterus is falling off. But its light. Bleeding not heavy. I'm a big woman and when I reach down there I can actually feel my strings at the opening. It doesn't take a lot to feel them I mean they are seriously right there! And.pointy. how long is the period going to last? Should my strings be that low? One of the perks of an iud is no period. So when do I get to experience that? I mean I didn't bleed this long after giving birth. Oh one more thing. I've notice I've been having head aches lately as well. Can anyone help me understand this more?
