Hi all,

I just had the THD procedure done Wednesday at 1pm.  It's now Sunday at 4pm.  I developed hemorrhoids and some rectal prolapse after the delivery of my son several years ago.  I have tolerated the protruding skin, intermittent thrombosed hemorrhoids, and bleeding on the tissue paper since then, but to be honest, I really couldn't stand the way it looked.  My husband never said anything but I felt very very unattractive during sex and it was really beginning to affect me.  Also, it was hard to keep the area clean without causing a lot of irritation.  Anyway, I heard about the THD procedure from a colo-rectal surgeon friend of mine and so decided to go for it. I read GM's post and I am generally quite tough (gave birth without an epidural and didn't think it was all that bad), so I figured I would have a super smooth post-op course.  Well, I can't say that it has been fun.  I have been VERY uncomfortable and in quite a bit of pain.  For the moms out there, it feels like you are having birthing contractions but in your rectum.  And, you CONSTANTLY feel like you have to have a bowel movement.  I didn't take narcotics beaches I didn't want to get constipated so all I used was toradol for the pain and zofran for the nausea.  I have to say that I was not prepared for this pain and, when I took the mirror to check out the area, there doesn't seem to be much difference.  I seriously am not sure I could go through this "healing period" again.  Ialso have a post-op thrombosed hemorrhoid.  Lucky me!  My surgeon says that the full effect takes about 3 months (scar tissue will eventually cause more retraction of skin).  Anyway, for what it's worth, if I have a good final outcome, I would say the pain would have been worth it.  And, I would throw in the following recs:

1) make sure you get an enema BEFORE you go to the OR

2) don't take narcotics for the pain because they will constipate you

3) toradol works great for the pain (gets rid of that "contraction" feeling)

4) take something for the nausea (I took zofrqn)

5) keep taking fiber post-op

6) expect significant pain and if you don't get any, hooray!

I will post again in a week but for right now, I am on the couch, in pain, taking sits baths, and hoping this horrible feeling goes away soon!

Sorry for the spelling errors. Hard to be grammatically correct while wincing in pain! =)

Hi, can I ask how it's gone as your history sounds exactly like mine. Ie skin tags, and piles. I'm due to gave THD but worried about the results

Hi, Just want to put my comments in.

I have read and re-read all of the posts on the THD procedure and was worried about getting it done like many of you.

I am 43 years old, physically fit, and had stage 3 external hems, which didnt hurt, but would bleed briefly after every bowel movement for months at a time. This really bothered me mentally, even though I had a colonoscopy done which showed no problems except hems.

So I had the THD procedure  done on June 3rd, and it has been almost 2 months, and I am glad I had it done.

The biggest problem with posting on this site on an hourly/daily basis right after you get the surgery is that it scares people who are thinking about having the procedure done. Of course you are going to have pain and discomfort, which is what my doctor told me in the first place - Brian Sweeney, from Umass memorial in worcester MA. ( I would highly recommend him, he has done at least 20-30 of these)

I did not take any pain killers, as they will bind you up, which is not a good thing right after surgery. It is also very hard to urinate for the first couple days. All of this was told to me ahead of the surgery.

Sitz baths worked great, especially when you had to have a bowel movement. my nurse told me to do it right in the sitz bath, which was disgusting, but it was the easiest , most comfortable way to have one. I had some bleeding for 4-5 weeks after surgery, but it has subsided, no more hems, no more bleeding.

I still take Konsyl fiber in the morning with food, and 2 fiberwell gummies after dinner, every day. And eat a fiber rich diet.

I stay away from large amounts of cheese, and NEVER push or strain when I go to the bathroom.

Hope this helps better than the hourly posts of people giving vivid descriptions of the pain they are going through. Surgery always sucks, but you deal with it because you know you will improve every day and eventually be back to normal.

I bet if you were to ask all the THD patients on this board, 2 months post op, 99% of them would say it was worth it.

Thanks to everyone for these posts.  It's educational and (sadly) comforting to know I'm not alone in this. I'm considering this THD surgery but will need to pay out of pocket.   I'm trying to do my homework first so I can make a decision on which way to go.  Can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs to have the surgery?  what is the price of the THD?

Hi, I'm day 17 now post THD surgery in Naas in Ireland. Long story short, it's been hell/agony/worst pain post operativly I've known... My Q is that, here I am, day 17 & still not out of the woods - BM's are incredibly painful & plentiful - my life revolves around a bathroom. Going long distances ir playing with the children is still out as I permanently feel like I need to have a BM! Is there anyone out there in the same situation or does it get better??? Crying with frustration - feels like I'll never be normal again.

Hi,its now day twelve post thd for myself and like yourself i am struggling badly.Got mine seen to in Scotland and was in and out of hospital on the same day.The pain around the area has been bearable although a bit stingy due to all the bm;s ive been having,it also feels as if another pile has  appeared.I too seem to be spending most of the day around the bathroom as i have a lot off pressure at the back passage as if i need to go to the loo again,i also seem to be in pain above the anus at the tailbone as if ive had a hard kick up the butt, this pain is also working its way down the back of my leg,it feels like nerve damage possibly due to the injection they gave me in the back before procedure.Have been trying hard not to push when having a bm but thats not been easy, and my back passage seems to automatically go into fierce spasms as soon as i sit down causing me a lot of discomfort. One thing that does give me a bit of relief from all the discomfort is a hot bath,at the moment it does seem as if there is no end in sightbut fingers crossed that will change this week.

Hi - I am day 18 now & frantically trying to see my Surgeon. Yesterday & last night I had 15 BM's- most of them between 1am & 5 am so I got no sleep. I am exhausted today in work & had 4 BM's from the time I arrived in to work. Quality of life at the moment is bad, due to constant feeling full in rectum & having to go to the bathroom. Awaiting response from Surgeon. Is there anyone out there that had/ is having a similar THD recovery??? Wishing their is someone to tell me that this will all settle down & I will get my life back cause I am seriously regretting THD surgery right now. My hemmorhoids were not that bad to live with. No like this

I had THD privately in uk on 13 October, I was told 48 hr recovery. I went down for surgery in morning and when I came round I was in instant pain, after a couple of hours I was sent home with stool softener and pain killers, for the first week I couldn't even manage to get out of bed the pain was horrific, I have had 4 children all with no pain relief and I can honestly say the pain from THD was worse than giving birth. All I could do was keep taking more painkillers, my BM were like passing glass, pain was not the word for this. I personally would not EVER have this done again and would not recommend this procedure there was not enough information given all the surgeons said was after 48 hours you will be back to normal (yeah right) Now 10 days since having op and I am still struggling but trying to stay positive and fight the pain, I'm so depressed and keep crying, I no everyone's different and some have had a positive outcome from this procedure. Really wish I had found this site before I had my op as I probably would not have done it.

I am just home after being re admitted to hospital on the 22nd - my Surgeon operated again as I was in extreme pain post THD. What he said was, my THD was a success but there was no healing in the site where he pulled my external skin tags inwards & where he stitched them. That accounts for the extreme pain when passing a BM. So I'm back home & it's a case of wait & see. I had my initial THD on the 2nd Oct & the second evaluation under General Anasthetic on Thursday 23rd. My experience has been a big negative. Yes, supposedly the THD "was successful" but absolutely no healing on the skin tags he stitched inside. Still in bits & pain. I previously posted that I have had 2 natural births & believe me, the pain of childbirth was a diddle compared to the pain of this. So, so, regretting I ever had this done. Apologies, but not everyone is "back to normal after 48 hrs".
