My 17 year old son coughs VERY frequently, if he is not coughing then he is clearing his throat. I had him tested for asthma and the Dr. said he was fine. He's been through antibiotics but they do nothing, because he is not "sick." He is an athlete and is healthy except for the constant cough. What could this be?
how long has this been going on?? what does it sound like is it deep or just like there is a little tickle in his throat?

Well, this may be interesting.
I've had a cough like that for the past 40 or 50 years.
It used to start in February and last until April or May.
Now it usually starts in December and lasts until July. It's very aggravating to be hoarse for that many months every year.
I get rather tired of it at times and others who don't know me well, think I'm spreading some horrific thing around.
I have never been happy with what medical people are willing to do about it. The doctor usually asks if it's a productive cough. When I say it is, that seems to satisfy HIM and that's the end of it.

I went for my annual exam last Wednesday and I was hoarse that day because I got woke up about 4:00am by the cough, so I was hoarse from coughing all morning before I went to see him. He sent me for a chest x-ray on Thursday, but I think that was mainly because I haven't had one in 10 years. Anyway, he called me Friday evening to say the x-ray was fine.

I'm going to an ENT tomorrow to see what he/she can find. I guess my doctor has finally taken an interest in the cough that's been bothering me for 45 years. I'll let you know if they finally do something that helps.

My daughter had a cough like that but it was so severe that I was sure she had bronchitis. I took her to the dr. repeatedly but her lungs were fine. It turns out that it was the new school building she was in. The chemicals from the carpets and rubber glue on the stair wells. As soon as school let out the cough stopped. Unfortunately, the coughing caused a hiatal hernia which the chiropractor was able to fix on Jan 20, 2010 after much suffering with severe stomach pain. It's been a heck of a ride. She is finally well and eating again. A netti pot helps rid the mucous in the head if his cough is from a tickle. Also rinse the mouth with warm water for 15 mins. Swish hard the whole time. Google Mucous pull and read about it. It helps my son's extreme allergies. Best of luck to you.

How did you figure out it was the school? Is she allergic? I am very interested in this becasue my son is going to a school in an arena and has been coughing since Sept. It got somewhat better at Christmas but we were back to coughing in Jan.

My daughters cough comes and goes. I've put her on allergy medicine at times b/c doc's can't find anything else wrong. I was tgoing to take her to an allergist and the cough disappeared. I'm at a loss. I do know that when I make her vacuum and dust her room every Saturday she is better. Same goes for me, if I keep the dust down. Ice tea made from black tea bags helps reduce inflammation in the body and has really helped my son's allergies. good luck.

This is us too, Sally Martin! I took him to the dr last year for this and they gave him nasal spray. The dr said that it might be out of habit too. I did notice that he does it more when he seems to be nervous. Last night he had a basketball game and he would not stop coughing. (I'm sure the running doesn't help) BUt it's so frustrating to hear him constantly cough. It's not a long cough, it's just a one cough kind of thing, repeated. OVER AND OVER. I am going to take another poster's advice and look up mucous pull. ALso going to start him on Zyrtec again. I am wondering if it's some type of allergy. Did you ever have any luck with your son?

Acid reflux will cause a constant cough.

My 14yr old grandson has a persistant cough. It is a dry cough like a tickle in his throat. Doc can't find anything wrong but it worries me. He too is an athlete and seems ok except for the cough.

Naturally enlarged tonsils can cause this. More easily irritated according to docter. Have them checked by pediatrician.
