I'm almost 3 weeks after surgery now and healing pretty well. I went back to work after 6 days which I was worried about but coincidentally my swelling massively reduced the night before my first day back! Now I feel pretty normal and don't notice it during the day at all, I have a check up appointment next week so we'll see how that goes!

Personally I would just purely focus on the physical pain, I know some people say that have got it done for emotional reasons due to how it looks but my doctor did say that this barely/never happens.

Also be prepared that they may make you try other things first, I was prescribed a numbing type cream that I used for 3 months before they considered surgery.

But definitely just go and see your doctor, so far it's best thing I've done!

Good luck!

Hello Everyone,

I know this post is quite old but I just thought I would share my experience so far. I'm in NI, visited my GP today (absolutely terrified at first but she was so understanding) after a quick examination she explained that I'm being referred to a plastic surgeon as opposed to a gynae? Has anyone heard of this? From my research it seems that most people have been referred to a gynaecologist first.

She also mentioned that it may take up to a year before the surgery due to the waiting list being so long.

Did you go to the doctors upset about it's appearance rather than any physical discomfort? If you did then I'm assuming that is why, although labiaplasty for appearance on the nhs is pretty rare so I guess you're lucky! Have you asked why it is with a plastic surgeon? Could be worth seeing if you can get a gynae instead if it is much quicker.

I had mine done by a gynae, and although this was for discomfort reasons, she took great care to make sure it looked good and I'm very happy with how it looks now.

Hi, I've from NI too!!! Went to my GP two years ago and was also referred to a plastic surgeon. Had the consultation and there and then he told me he'd do the surgery. Unfortunately I waited a year for the surgery and when the letter finally did arrived id missed the date as they sent it to the wrong address! So typical. So anyway I phone the plastic surgeons secretary and she said she'd put me back on the waiting list which would take another year :( anyway a year and a half later I've finally got my date for a months time, very happy!! Wouldn't worry about it being a plastic surgeon they do it more often now than gynae's do. Good luck!!!

Hi,

That's great news! How long did it take between seeing your GP and your consultation?

I don't mind waiting up to a year, just want to get it sorted. Keep us updated on how you get on!

Hi, sorry haven't checked back in a while! Took maybe 6 weeks before my app with the consultant. So a couple of days before my surgery got a letter to say it had been cancelled and would be rescheduled so I phoned the surgeons secretary and she gave me a date for 2 weeks later (after I explained I needed it when I was at home as I am currently at uni in England). Then of course 4 days before the surgery it got cancelled again!! Absolute nightmare. So phoned again and told them the next time I would be home would be this Christmas and she said she would get it sorted and give me a call back which of course she never did :(. Feel like completely giving up on any chance of this surgery and just saving to get it done privately now.

So just a quick update! When I got back from uni there was a letter to say the surgery had been scheduled for this week. Didn't want to get my hopes up as it had been cancelled twice in the past. Checked the post everyday expecting a cancellation letter and nothing so phoned up on the day at 7am and they said that there were no beds available just what I was expecting but they actually phoned me back at 8am to say a bed had become available and could I make it in before 9!! At this point I was still trying not to get my hopes up as I knew it could get cancelled at any second due to an emergency. But anyway arrived before 9 and and was out of surgery by about half 11 couldn't be more happier that its finally done!!!

I recently plucked up the courage to visit my GP about having a labiaplasty, she was very kind and understanding and referred me to the local hospital to see if I was eligable for a labiaplasty on the NHS. Unfortunately after my appointment being cancelled, then being booked into the wrong clinic, I finally saw a doctor (after waiting 2 hours) and was told within 5 minutes that this surgery is no longer carried out on the NHS and is only available to patients that have ripped vulvas doing child birth.
This really upset me, being a student this is not a surgery i could pay for privately and causes me so much pain during sex, nothing to do with having it done for comestic reasons but the consultant was rude and didn't seem to care.
This has left me so angry as I have heard stories of women having breast enlargement surgery on the NHS because they have been unhappy with their breasts, but something that is physically causing me pain, they have no interest in helping me.
I currently reside in London and have been told no hospital in the area will fund this surgery anymore but will continue to seek help.
Has anyone else had any luck???

Had the same experience. It depends on area. I went to one hospital and three people told me it couldn't be done, I went away in tears as it was horrible having three people look at it and then be told it's normal and rejected for the procedure I was referred there for. Sorry you had to go through that too.

Went back to my doctor and she referred me again and told me to choose a specific hospital. Had it done over a year ago now and couldn't be happier.

You need to make it clear that it's causing and has caused you significant emotional distress and physical pain. Excuse my bluntless here but I also heard that they will only do it if one side is bigger than the other, so for this reason while I was waiting to be inspected by the second doctor i gently pulled one side so that when he looked at it, it looked larger than the other. hope this helps, best of luck!

Thanks for the advance. My doctor is currently away on annual leave. But as soon as she back I'm going to be on her case. Really want to get this sorted but feel she's going to fob me off and recommend going private (not something I could afford). Did you have it done in London?

I have problems with my labia its hanging down when I go the loo I go through pain when I'm peeing , I go through pain when I'm whipping my self I cant sit down straight I cant wear tight clothing such as jeans and leggings I stopped going swimming because of the pain I go through and I'm scared that someone might see my labia hanging out of my swimming suit I don't know what to do because I have read stores where people saying that GP no longer help because it is a cosmetic surgery I've never been to my GP about my private area so I don't know what to do I'm scared that I would not get the help I would want maybe getting referred to a Gynaecologist where they can help me and I want to know does NHS still fund this type of surgery

Hi! Sorry to hear of your struggle and discomfort, I am also in a similar situation and visited my doctor, he referred me to a gynaecologist who assessed me and he said I didn't need anything doing, I could get a second opinion tho. I got a call of a female gynaecologist, who said it wasn't funded and that there was no point in having an appointment. I have had a baby which has made me way more self conscious of down there and I'm in discomfort all the time. I have been pushing as much as I can for it, but it's not looking likely. I am looking at private now! I would say speak to your gp! What have you got to loose?! Let me know how you get on and I will do the same. I'm pretty certain I will end up having to get in debt for it tho :(
