I just got this diagnosis today. I have been in pain for 6 weeks. Finally a podiatrist went over all of my xrays and told me I had a Lis Franc injury. I am in a boot and now have a knee walker so that I will not bear weight on the foot. I am so mad as this should have been seen 6 weeks ago. It is painful and being unable to bear weight on a foot is awful. I am hoping for the best and hoping for no surgery. The fact that this was missed may make my recovery longer. Just happy to know what is wrong after limping for 6 weeks.

I was dignosed 10 days ago with a linsfranc fracture, in which the doctors said part of my ligament was torn and a fleck of bone was pulled off.  I went to see a foot and ankle specialist and at first (of course) he wanted to put a few screws in my joints and then keep me in a cast for 6-8 weeks.  The surgeon noted that my linsfranc injury was what he called "soft," I do have some joint displacement when I bear weight.  Upon weighing the pros and cons and coming to understand that I will probably have mid-foot pain and some arthritis on and off for the rest of my time in this body, with or without surgery, I am choosing to not have the screws put in.  I believe what is most important (at least in my case) is to not bear weight.  I must stay off my foot and allow my ligaments to heal (scar) in a cast.  I will be followed by the doctor and he stated he would like to take x-rays every week or every other week to chart my healing progress.  Worse comes to worse down the line and I find myself in terrible pain (godforbid), I will opt for surgery at that time.  I am 30 years old and healthy and I feel my body will be able to heal from this without screws in my joints.  glad to be able to share with and learn from this blog. :)

Hi Rowan. Did you ever recover without surgery? I have a Lisfranc disrupture, but it wasn't spotted immediately (1 month), so I was back on weight bearing, now off again, after MRI. Into 4th month and not much improvement. Going non-surgical route at this point.

I'm for non surgical, because I've read too many stories of non successful surgical treatments. I'm guessing everyones lisfranc is different. Just do what you think is best. I think my foot will survive, no matter what others say. I will bend and kiss it every day and it will survive!

I had midfoot sprain and torn tendons and ligaments that torn off a piece of bone on March 21.Boot on for two weeks, then special shoe for three. Had the MRI. Doctor said it would get better. Last week I was told by a foot surgeon that I need a fusion with screws b/c my arch is collapsing from the injury. I only tripped over a curb! I don't know who to trust. I have no family nearby so surgery recovery will be tough.

That’s sounds awful!! Acupuncture helps with various injuries and health problems so I suggest you to try out it. I often go to our local TCM Mississauga clinic for these treatment kind of treatments and practitioners there are quite good!

I have been going through exactly what you describe. After 5 doctors, I finally got the lysfranc diagnosis. I am wondering if I should give away my shoes :(. I have pain with every step but less with tennis shoes and orthotics. I am trying those for a month and then the podiatrist suggested customs. I used to run and enjoy high impact exercise classes. Are you any better? Did you find any good exercises that do not cause pain? I really do not want surgery on my foot.

Hello, just out of curiosity did you see a doctor in Metairie, LA?

I am wondering how things worked out for you? I am in a similar situation, I had a fracture of the base of the 2nd metatarsal and was put in a weight bearing boot, 8 weeks later they realized I had a lisfranc and should not have been bearing weight. Fusion surgery is the only option and I am wondering if you had any luck healing without surgery? I am an avid runner, yogi and just really active and I want to be able to continue that.

I just finished week 14 being in a boot after being diagnosed with a lisfranc. At week 9, my doc stand it's probably healing, maybe another week. So I'm requesting another CT scan to see if it's healing. He said at the beginning that if it doesn't heal, surgery may be needed. How long must I wait? I have pain if I walk far or too long in the boot, or almost right away without it.I really don't want surgery, but has anyone actually healed without it?

Hi Jojos,
What did you end up doing? Having the surgery, or not? In an effort to help others that may be reading this, I will share my experience. On August 25th 2016 I seriosly injured my foot & walked on it for three days b/c my husband thought it was only a sprain. To stand was excruciating. Finally went to urgent care & xrays showed multiple fractures. I was put in an air boot. I was referred to an Orthopedic surgeon on Friday before Labor day. First thing after taking his own xrays he wanted to schedule surgery for the following Tuesday, because of the holiday. I did NOT want surgery if possible. We told him that and that we wanted to go for a second opinion & asked if any other tests could be done. He ordered an MRI. ( I had chipped & bruised bone, fractured my foot & a ligament tear, which was where the Lisfranc surgery came in). MRI showed some shift due to tear, but surgeon agreed he would do wait & see with us, as long as it didn't shift anymore. I wore an air boot for 6-7 weeks, iced that baby & elevated it, & used Arnica gel to help with inflammation & bruising. I had multiple weight bearing xrays & now 4 months out & no surgery. It still swells if I walk too much & aches too, but all in all, I am happy with my progress. If I had to do it over again, I would still ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS, and put my foot down, about the surgery (pun intended), but I also would've worn the boot at least 8+ weeks to protect it more, as I was worried it was going to shift more without it. I realize this is not the solution for everyone & my surgeon did try to scare me into having the surgery by saying I may not be able to do the things I love, walking , dancing etc down the road. Once I decided not to have the surgery, then he said we'll see, you may still need it a year down the road. But, how I'm walking now, I think not. I still can't wear any shoe I want, only two pairs feel comfortable, one is tennis shoes. Now he says I was "just lucky".

I was first dianosed with no injury at all after falling over my dog and twisting my foot wearing flip flops. Two days later i Saw two diff surgeons at two diff orthopaedic offices, both confirmed the lisfranc injury. One wanted to operate and put steel rods in my foot before even trying a boot cast. I insisted we try thr boot cast first. Then I went for a second opinion with a doc 30 miles away. He looked at xrays, mri and said "you dont need surgery but will have to wear the boot cast a long time. Took 6 month to heal but was totally worth it. Lisfranc surgery is very delicate and tricky and success rate is not high enough for me to take that gamble. Was so glad I got the second opinion and listened to my own judgement. Good luck everyone!

Hey! I'm in a very similiar situation - a severe sprain of 1st ligament but no dislocation after a car accident. I've see two leading surgeons - one immediately booked a surgery (without even trying a weight bearing Xray), the second one after the Xray decided to put me in a boot, as I have been walking already on my injured foot for past 3 weeks, and come back to see him in 3 weeks. I really don't want any surgery and will do my best. I heard about vitamins from Solgar called "7" supporting joints recovery. Any other advise? I'm glad there are other people trying to have it healed :)
