I had breast implants done 12 days ago.  I have silicone, I think 425cc done through areola insertion.  My nipples have become very sensitive, but I do have numbness on the upper portion of my left breast.  I was concerned until I have read through these posts.  I think this is the chance you take with getting surgery of any kind.  Even surgeries that are non-cosmetic can cause numbness.  I am hopeful that the numbness will go away over time.  If it does not, I am still happy I had surgery.  After having 2 children and breast feeding both, my breasts looked deflated and it was hard to fit in tops even in a push up bra.  I did the surgery for myself, not my husband.  It took me 2 years to convince him to let me do it.  He always said he loved my body and was against any kind of plastic surgery.  I finally got him on board and he loves them!!!  I barely had any nipple sensation before the surgery so I think I will like the increased sensation my nipples have.  Not sure if that will last, though.  I have another follow up appt. with my PS tomorrow and I will be asking him about all my concerns.

Bottom line girls, you're not going to regain sensation in your breasts, and if you do it will be very very minimal. The nerve endings were severed and will NOT reconnect themselves. Trust me, I know, and I have tried everything! I got a breast augmentation when I was 19 years old. I am 33 years old now and I am still waiting to feel something. The only sensation I feel from time to time is a a nasty sharp throbbing pain in my left breast. I have to grab my breast and squeeze as hard as I can to stop it from hurting. I've rubbed ice, lit matches and pinched my nipples in attempts to feel something, and still nothing! My doctor said sensation would gradually come back...they LIE! I so regret getting them done. As sad as it sounds, you will learn to live with this. Good luck to you all.

Did you ever regain normal sensation? I'm a year post op augmentation (~300 cc silicone submuscular, areolar incisions) and have total numbness both nipples and the cleavage portion of one breast. I have no temperature sensation to the numb areas either!

how many years til your nipple sensation returned and do you think it is similar to your pre-op sensation? Did you regain temperature sensation also? I can't feel heat or cold to my numb nipples and of course, the erotic feelings are gone also:(
my dr never told me of this risk! so mad!

did you ever regain nipple sensation? I'm looking into herbal remedies like st john's wort and helichrysum essential oils in the hopes that the numbess can be reversed!

Omg you just said EXACTLY how I feel :( I am so miserable Ive even thought of having them removed just to hopefully feel them again. I would give anything to have my saggy excitable great feeling breasts again. Instead Ive now got attractive, numb, sore and uncomfortable nightmares. I really am sad, if I had of known I would never had done it, saddest things is I hate my boyfriend touching them and I have to fake how I feel. Thanks for your post, at least I'm not alone xx

I had a BA on March 23 of this year.  My PS didn't tell me I could lose sensation, but I already knew through lots of online research.  If you've never had a BA losing sensation is a BIG deal.  I didn't give it much thought before I went in and now my left breast (which was my more sensitive one) has no sensation in the nipple or lower part of my breast where the incision is.  I also lost sensation under my arm (in the area where a bra would cover).  My right breast seems to have made it out of surgery just fine (no loss of feeling that I can tell).  I also still have a little bit of pain when my husband tries to touch or suck my left nipple (this sucks).  Yes, in some ways our sex life is better, but it's also diminished with the loss of sensation in my left breast.  I would say it could be a trade off, but you never know how your body will react from the trauma.  As far as regaining sensation, it is possible from what I have learned about the nervous system through a course in Anatomy & Physiology.  The nerves that supply your breasts are part of your Peripheral Nervous System and when they are damaged the more superficial part (closer to the skin) degenerates, and eventually over time will regrow.  If the damage is just too much then it will not and there is no way to tell who will or will not regain sensation.  I hope, one day, that all of us will regain sensation.  Goodluck to you all!

I had breast augmentation surgery 5 years ago, and my left breast never felt normal. The right one is fine, feels like I was born with it, but the left is a different story. I expressed my concerns with my dr and she said that everything looked normal and that she didn't see anything that would be causing this. 1/3 of my breast, not the nipple, is numb. I don't know if it's to try to see her again and tell her there IS something wrong, or just to see another surgeon. Any advice?

About 1 and 1/2 yr out, still numb back of right armpit. My nipples used to be sensitive in a good way, but now I can't even stand to touch them myself they are so sensitive and hurt if they are squeezed. Not much improvement thus far, and I really don't expect any. I think the nerves were/are stretched or compressed. At least my breasts look good now.

8 months post op with 400 cc's saline. Incision under my breast and placed under my muscle. I have feeling everywhere on my breast except for a small area on the outer sides. It's very uncomfortable.

Don't panic! Numbness is quite common after breast augmentation, with the nipples being the most commonly affected. Sensory nerves are often damaged at the tme of surgery; many are so small they are invisible. Nerve regrowth occurs very slowly. Sensation typically returns within 12 months, although permanent numbness can rarely occur. Having said that, at 3 weeks there is little cause for concern. Continue to massage the tissue per your doctor's instruction and try not to worry! Give your body time to recover and you will be quite happy in the long run
