glad to be reading all this but its freaking me out. i was on doxcicycline since 6/9/11. spent all day in the sun today and at dinner my hands started tingling and burned when i washed them. It comes and goes and is also going up my arms. This is so strange!!! PLEASE TELL ME IT GOES AWAY!!!:(
I too am having these symptoms. I am so glad I am not crazy and I found these posts because there is nothing in the drug info to indicate doxy causes these problems. However, minocycline is a similar drug in the tetracycline class of antibiotics and it lists neuro toxicity as a side effect. Here is my experience: On day 5 of doxycycline 100 mg twice daily, I spent some time in the sun. not very long. Noticed that my lower legs felt very hot every time I was exposed to the sun even in the late afternoon around 7 pm. The next day my hand started tingling and by day 7 I felt like my arms and legs but especially feet and hands were exposed to a cold rain. It was the most disturbing sensation I have ever felt. Plus, any time water droplets would get on my hands and feet it would feet like acid. I stopped the doxy 4 days ago and the sensations are better but still there. I too hope it goes away. I am so depressed. I can't live like this. But I know it can take awhile for nerve damage to resolve. I also have a sunburn type rash on my arms and nose.
This is an update to my previous post. After stopping the doxycycline, the pins and needles sensations took about 10 days to resolve completely. I am never taking that medication again.
I have been on doxy for 7 days . I am In Florida for vacation. I went the beach went & washed my hands . As soon as the water touched my hands I felt numbness & tingling. I feel it is from doxy. Did your symptoms. Ever go away. Please let me know.
You are not alone-- I was out in the sun after about 3 days on Dioxy, and as of last night my hands are tingly and numb and burning like heck in water. I wish they had put a NO SUNLIGHT warning on the label!!!
I just finished taking doxyclcline yesterday morning. Yesterday afternoon, my hands started feeling like pins and needles poking them each time I get them wet (handwashing). I thought it was because I was in the sun yesterday but it is still feeling that way today.
Day 5 of Doxcycline I woke up feeling a weird tingling in the tip of my right pinky. It was kind of itchy, but then would go numb from time to time. By evening it had started to spread to other fingertips. Haven't stopped taking it yet - debating whether this is a good idea as I don't want any major permanent damage.
I've been on Doxy for about a week now. The nature of my work forces me to be in the sun for long hours daily. I've been wearing SPF 100 sunscreen but for the past three days or so now I have also noticed burning and tingling on the tops of my hands. Also the same feelings of scalding water when washing them.
Yes I've been taking it for 4 days and today my hands started getting all tingly and numb. I'm not sure if it's from the doxycyclone or not. Yesterday my back was hurting and my dad (he's a doctor) said that could have something to do with it. He also said it might be that I don't get the right vitamines. But it's extremely uncomfortable.
I've been on Dyoxycycline now for almost 3 weeks. I'll be done in two days, so I'm going to try to tough if out. But I too have the same symptoms. After sun exposure, with sunscreen and without, the tops of my hands are burning and when exposed to water, feel like an acid peel is taking place. There is also acute redness on my nose, where I did wear sunscreen. The doctor did warn me about sun, and to wear sunscreen, but honestly it should be a stronger warning. However, it is pretty hard to avoid the sun in June.
Yes, I am currently taking same medication and just developed same side effect. i still do not know why?
Me too... Can you please help me and let me know what it was at the end or did it disapear through time?
Thanks a lot and best

My burning hands, feet and arms went away about 3 days after quitting the doxycycline. I was out in the sun and developed a sensation like cold rain was pelting me even though it was 90 degrees. It must be toxic to the small peripheral nerves in association with sun exposure in certain individuals. That's about all I can figure since it has happened to all of these people but it is still not a widely reported side effect.
I have been on Doxy for 12 days and the tingling and burning of my toes and foot tops and fingers and hand tops is making me crazy. I have been at the beach covered and slathered in 50 sunscreen. The hot sand that touchs my toes thru my sandals burns like fire. The sun rays actually hurt. Had some mysterious bug bite that got infected and was given a 21 days script. I am seriously thinking of quitting the twice a day 100mg pills at this half way point. The infection has gone. Certainly don't want any permanent nerve damage. Does anyone think ending the pills is a good idea? Never have taken any meds before so I am new to this.
I also have been on the 'Doxy', now at day 7 of 14 day, due to what appeared to be a bug bite with large red circle, and was afraid of Lyme Disease.
I knew all about the sun/photo-sensitivity, and have mostly avoided being exposed, except for one day, last saturday, and I wore long sleve white shirt, hat, and put sun block on my legs (as I was wearing shorts), tops of my feet (wearing sandals), and on the tops of my hands, as they were exposed. Bright sunlight, for about 1-2 hours probably.
I did NOT notice any burning/sun-burn at all, thankfully, but I did notice that at least on one hand, my left hand, got funny tingling sensation, similar to other posts, like cold water spray sensation, and then became pins and needles, but, it went away after 10-20 min. As my hand was cold, I thought perhaps it was bad circulation, and warming my hand up, the sensations went away, not sure if that is helpful, or just a co-incidence.
It happened again the next day, shortly after my 2nd dose for the day, this time, a bit stronger sensation, and this time, in both hands, and mostly finger tips, but the whole hands somewhat. Same cold water spray feeling, along with pins and needles kinda feeling. No burning, water doesn't bother me, and I'll be sure to avoid sun/light exposure until I'm off the Doxy. Not sure if the light did it, or what, but it sure is a weird sensation, slightly annoying, but for me, not so intense as to be a serious issue. Hopefully, it will go away once I'm off the meds, after 24 hours or so, certainly within a few days, it should mostly clear outta the body, I think.
If it was severe, and/or really painful, I would see a doctor about it right away, to make sure all is OK. I guess I was lucky in that it seems kinda mild to me so far.
Glad to read that others have same symptoms, and it's not 'just me'.
:)
I would strongly advise to avoid sunlight until off the meds, not sure if sunblock would really help or not, as even the light that get's through might be enough to cause grief. Stay in the shade for a few weeks, wear long clothing, etc..., don't trust sunblock alone, and certainly don't stay in the bright sun on a beach, etc...
Good luck to ya'll, and please do post your results after going off the meds, if it lingers or goes away, etc...
Cheers,
Daniel
