If it's clear phlegm, it may be GERD(reflux). My son has it pretty severe and I only have it at night. His mimics a cold- his eyes get red and water, as the acid comes upward inside his sinus cavity. His phlegm is so bad at night sometimes that I have to use a blue nose syringe to clear his airway. He began at 3 month foaming from the mouth when he slept and that was the giveaway. We have to avoid spicy, greasy, and dairy foods as much as possible and eating after 6pm. Sleeping elevated and on the left side is also very helpful. I make sure I drink plenty of water and keep it by my night stand at night to help clear my throat when I wake coughing that junk. I'd also look into candida, as I've been told it could be a silent culprit.

Mucus forms at the back if nose blocking the air wind. This is common at night due to cold or damp weather. N few could be allergic to that. Use nasaldrops to clear the nose passage n temperature in control. Hope this helps

Mucus forms at the back of the nose thus blocking the air wind pipe. This is common at night due to cold or damp weather. And few could be allergic to that. Mostly from midnight to 3am, when the temperature dips suddenly, during cold or in rainy season and this time triggers more of coughing. Hope this helps. Use nasaldrops to clear the nose passage and keep the room temperature in control.

Diphenhydramine will help for about 3 hours. It's just generic Benadryl. Go to Sam's Club and by a 600 tablet bottle of Member's Mark for about $5. The same amount of Benadryl will cost you probably $75.00 and it's the exact same stuff!

It is the chemicals in the air that they're spraying. The chemtrails are causing it. It's the best explanation.

Bactroban should not be used for respiratory problems and does not have place in this.
You may be suffering from asthma or similar condition with an allergic origin. Better to have it well diagnosed because it may become chronic and may limit lung function in years to come.

I have been a smoker for 45 yrs. Both parents were smokers and died of bronchogenic cancer. I've alway had a little cough but nothing serious and have good stamina. But 6 months ago, I woke up during the night choking on phlegm....and lots of it. I have continued to smoke and I am positive this is the cause. The phlegm protects the lining of the airway, especially the bronchus. When laying down, it gets worse. Being a registered nurse, I know the cause but can't kick the addiction and habit of cigarette smoking. The smoke constantly irritates the airway, causing goblet cells to overproduce sputum and thick phlegm. To those that smoke, we have to quit....and the sooner the better. Tomorrow is my day!

Apparently it is acid reflux, even without the heartburn aspect. I have the same thing happen when I eat too closely to bedtime, especially sugary foods.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.  During the day I'm fine.  However, when I'm about to go to bed, I sense this excessive mucus in my throat, and there's practically nothing I can do about it.

I have tried a few supplements, but the thing that made the biggest difference was digestive enzymes.  Although, it hasn't solved my problem completely.  Before the enzymes, I'd get that mucus during the day and the night.  But after I took them, I only had the problem once every few days, but only at night.

The other thing that made a difference was "Kirkland Signature Mucus Relief Chest Guaifenesin 400 mg".  This didn't make the problem go away, but it made it so it wasn't so "annoying" by breaking down the mucus.

Overall, I'm still looking for a permanent solution.

I would like to say that I am experienceing the same thing. I am 18, and this happens almost every night and has been happening for at lease the past few month. My mom explained it as post nasal drip, and my dad has it too, but when I looked it up, it said that post nasal drip is for people who are sick, and I know I am not sick. I got up this morning to use the bathroom, and I vomited. When I did I was a thick red mucous. It scared me though, because I have not eaten anything red that I remember. Someone please tell me what I have it's starting to scare me

This is same as me ive been coughing since september 2016 and it was still going in September 3017. At the start i had pneumonia and was on antibiotics and puffers but nothing stopped the cough. Xrays and other tests showed nothing till my ENT specialist said it could be the steroid in the puffer. Check with your gp first if you want but try these Atrovent Forte Nasal Spray. Wow it stopped the cough. Ive now got another infection with symptoms like hayfever mixed with a cough. Off to GO again I guess. Good luck
