I am in my 60’s and this is a problem that started about 5 years ago. I did the bedding switcheroo and over several months eliminated gluten and dairy. No significant changes. My GP called it asthma but I’m not so certain. Sure wish we had some answers because I eventually had to address sleep deprivation through cannabis. At least I’m no longer sleep deprived. I also use a humidifier at night which seems to keep the phlegm thinner.

Being 66 and just getting these problems of PND( Post Nasal Drip) starting after Lunch and thru out the Afternoon and Eveing, Unless I lay my head back in my Office type Chair for count of 10 secs every 15-30 min and thus the PND goes down my throat instead. ( can feel it go down) and this goes on all Year now ! Not Seasonal..

2ndy- Saw a ENT and She Prescribed Atrovent 0.06% or Generic Brand of Ipratropium Bromide Nasal Spray, starting a Only 1 Spray in each Nostril at Noon and see how that works! and Solved the Problem. ( ENT Cost $250 w/o Ins. and only $50 with Supp Plan with my Medicare..)

Problem #2-
But I still wake up in Middle of the nite Coughing up Mucus.. So taking 600, time release Mucinex 1 hr Before Bedtime..
and I also will use the Nellitpot at bedtime EONite.. ( If 600 mg isn't enough, take 2 tablets = 1200 mg or 1200 mg Mucinex.. or store brand at Walgreens. ( ask Pharmacist)

But go see a ENT 1st -- From having this problem for 2 mos prior I developed an Infection In my nose and Prescriped a Muiorcin USP 2% Ointment( by Prescrption ) to put in my Nose every 12 hrs.. for 7-10 days.. and then the Nasal spray and Then Taking The Mucinex( Or Store Brand) but start with 600 MG time release at Bedtime and see if that works and if not? Try the 1200 mg. Time release.

The Excessive coughing is comming form the Mucus running down oyur throat over nite while you head is laying on your back. You can even try Sleeping in your lazyoby hair to keep your head Up and allow the Mucus to drain properly down your throat or try that nasal spray at Bedtime as well in the AM ( every 12 hrs) .

Hope that helps someone else !

Previously I wrote that digestive enzymes helped me, but that was inaccurate. I tried taking other digestive enzymes and they proved to be ineffective, so I went back and noticed that it said "digestive enzymes with probiotics." After trying another probiotic that was effective, I compared the two and they have two similar ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus Casei.

So I focused on probiotics with those ingredients, which led me to what I'm taking now: Dr. Stephen Langer's Ultimate 16 Strain Probiotic with FOS (just google it). It has been very effective and helpful, but it hasn't cured my problem. (Note: I purchased that particular probiotic because it has the ingredients that I need plus it was a good price.)

I have had that problem 3 different times. I really thought I was going to die because I could not catch my breath because of mucous and my throat burned. I realized that i had chocolate cream pie just before going to bed. I am lactose intolerent somewhat, but feel that part of the problem is dairy and eating right before going to bed. Don't have mold in our house that I know of.

I agree with many of your suggestions and warnings to inform doctors. The best one is the NETI POT.
It uses warm water with a extremely fine grain salt to strip the linings of your sinuses. I learned using a drop or two of safflower oil into the salt water mix replaces and coats your sinus linings, protecting the sinuses from outside contaminants, if they exist.
I highly recommend trying this before going to bed and upon waking for at least a few weeks if you already have symptoms of bad congestion or infection. With sinus infection, green mucous, see a doctor and do a course of antibiotics and the neti pot.
Warnings: tilt your head when doing the NETI POT.
More salt is NOT BETTER, it will make you gag and you won't get the benefits of the mild cleanse.
Use ONE OR TWO drops safflower oil to recoat the sinus linings and protect them. Water should be warm not cold not hot. This is a gentle cleanse.

I have read this entire board looking for clues, as I have been experiencing this too. I have a long list of environmental issues to work through & am hopeful that I'll get to the bottom of this. I am 66 and have had asthma and allergies off & on, but nothing exactly like the increased mucus with no apparent sinus infection.

The most interesting ideas which have come up in this thread have been around the issue of digestion. It looks like digestive enzymes to reduce candida, as well as the use of natural antibiotics such as ginger, garlic, lemon & honey, could be useful. I've recently been reading about the havoc that food preservatives & other (non-nutritional) food additives like "synthetic fats" and "dough conditioners," as well as the pervasive use of high-fructose corn syrup, is having on our digestive system. I'm going to start there.

It is allergy!! I have the same symptom. Try Allegra for couple of weeks and you should be fine.
You have cough only in the nights because the posy nasal fluid drip to your throat when you lay down.
If you are taking Blood pressure med, take allegra at a different time ( a gap of 4-5 hrs).

The problem is for most and what I have experienced is what your eating specially be bed, hours before bed watch what you eat. Sweets, breads, spices, anything that causes mucus. Change your diet and this shall pass in due time for most people I do believe and have experience myself.
