It could also be piriformis syndrome. I have the same problem. Your piriformis muscle gets too tight from sitting all day and you need to stretch it out. Do a yoga class or look online about stretches you can do for piriformis syndrome.
ive had severe sciatic pain like you are describing since november, bak then i couldnt move couldnt get up the stairs so had to sleep on the sofa for 2 n half months. I was in a wheelchair for 8 weeks cos it was so bad have been on diazepam, gabapentin and naprosyn and takes the edge off but doesnt make the pain go away. im really fed up. at one point it spread to my arms and chest and i had what looked like rheumatoid nodules on one arm so had blood tests to rule out rheumatoid arthiritis and an autoimmune disorder. i had an MRI and went to see an orthopeadic surgeon and he gave me my results which were negative. i am going to see another spinal surgeon on the 22nd of this month so fingers crossed i will get some answers. i have already tried physio, electrotherapy accupuncture and even a chrio but nothing has helped, if anything it has made it worse. the most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disk so is probably best to get a scan from your Dr. It really is such an awful pain. I still wake up everytime i turn in my sleep its so frustratiing and hurts so much i end up screaming in pain. think im starting to annoy my fiance but i really cannot help it! if anyone gets some answers please post i am getting so desperate.
best of luck to you all who are suffering.

Need to stretch the spine. Just lie on your side and stick out your stomach, pull back your legs and shoulders. Too much leaning forward causes the herniated disc. Celebrex will relieve the pain in about a day but continued use damages the liver and kidney. I know all this because I experienced horrible pain for months. Also must have firm mattress with no sag. Leaking air mattress caused my trouble and sagging box springs made it worse..
Today is April 2, 2012 and I have been experiencing with the deep left buttock pain and more so in the left
thigh....more to the outside of the left thigh. As in all of the responses here, more so when I am sitting.
I finally got xrays and the doc (last week on March 27th) told me he thinks it is hip bursitis.
He gave me a cortisone shot and that did alleviate the pain about 85%
I am finding that I still have pain and as you all say after sitting and especially when driving.
I will wait another couple of months and then go back to the doc and see if he can do an mri ....hopefully
that would tell if it is a tendon or muscle. Good luck all because I feel (literally) your pain.
I suspect pinched sciatic nerve from too close spacing of Lumbar discs. Easy fix is to lie on your side and arch your body with the stomach sticking out and your legs and shoulders pulled back. Several minutes of this on each side should eventually stretch the spine to alleviate this pain. I am a back pain sufferer of long experience and discovered this easy fix. Physical therapist had me lie on my stomach while raising my chest with my arms which stretches the spine but harder to do than laying on your side but more effective.
I feel an instant difference just by changing my shoes.

The thigh pain in the back below buttocks and knee is normally associated with the back problem, may be a slightly to largely worn out lower back discs. This needs exercise for at least 15 to 20 days such as raising your leg 30-60 degrees 20 times while lying on your back, then do 0 to 90 degrees 15 times, later press your thigh (with folded leg) against the chest while lying down 15 times; while lying sideways, lift your leg up 15 times. You may also need exercises for your back. Yoga will definitely help alleviate back and lower thigh pain.
I have something similar although not as severe in pain, i don't feel it at all while walking, just if I sit a certain way or twist a certain way while standing. Are we 100% sure that none of the symptoms anyone including myself here are experiencing are not blood clots or blocked arteries? This has been worrying me quite a bit.
I began experiencing pain in the back of my right thigh two months ago. I woke up and it hurt so bad I could barely move. I screamed in pain all day for about a week. It then got better, but has remained at a moderate level since then.
I experience no pain while standing or walking, but it hurts to sit (I now work standing up at my computer) and driving or sitting in a car is painful.
I had an MRI of my lower back and MRI of my leg (as well as x-rays) and all were normal. I saw a chiropracter a few times but it didn't seem to do anything. The experts I've seen are confused--they say some of my symptoms are consistent with a pulled hamstring, but not all of them, and some are consistent with a pinched nerve. But none of it seems to all line up.
I was on an anti-inflammatory for a week or so but it didn't seem to help. I also tried physical therapy but I've found that any sort of back or leg stretches result in it hurting worse later that night.
I am scheduled to see a neurologist in a month.

I have been having the same pain everyone speaks of and I've been wondering why it seems so common in the left leg. But anyways mine started around 1-2 months ago, it might be more or less, I can't really remember . It was pretty bad to the point where I was always last to leave class (i'll be a high school senior in the fall). I could barely get up out of my seat and once I did eventually get out of my seat I had stand a wait a little bit until I could actually move because it hurt so much. But once I started walking the pain would be relieved also when I sat down the pain reduced. So I figured it was just a regular cramp. But it happened after every class period or basically anytime I sat down and tried to get back up. I figured it might of been from the lack of exercise since the end of the year is so busy. But then even walking around couldn't relieve the pain, it was there no matter what I did, sit, stand, or walk. For awhile I just ignored it and endured the pain, I don't really like going to doctors. And then without even noticing it went away fro 1-2 weeks end of May/beginning of June. But today it came back! and hurts just as much as before.
So after doing some reading/research what everyone said, I figure I do have the Sciatica/Piriformis Syndrome. It sounds closest to what I have. So I'm going to try the exercises people have recommended for Sciatica/Piriformis Syndrome and see what happens. Hopefully I have found the solution to my pain and I hope everyone else does as well, especially those who've had it for years! I feel ya pain!
I'll come back and post if the exercises work!
it is the sciatic nerve i had it for about a week. i went to an acupunturist and after five days with a needle in my ear and a session i am perfectly fine but i havent tried any extrenous exersice yet .
