I have been married for a few years, sexually active for 13 years, seeing different gynocologists for 14 years . I do not understand the plastic speculum. I know that the first gynocologist I saw used a small metal speculum which was uncomfortable but fine. I've also had some gynocologists use some plastic speculums that are less comfortable than metal ones but still no pain. The past 2 exams I have had have felt like I was being torn open and as the speculum opened I could feel the click click click each increment it would stretch farther...what is that?

Also, the first of the two last visits I saw only the Nurse Practioner and there was no one else in the room during the exam, only her and I and it was a very rough and painful experience. The second visit was with the actual doctor (nurse there as her "reinforcment" as she put it) but again painful and maybe because the NP had seen me the day before and I was still sore but come on?

I was told I had a ruptured vaginal cyst, but before the exam the pain I am now experiencing was not in existence ...I originally went in for left abdominal pain and heavy bleeding (not vaginal pain). I'm going to get the ultrasound she ordered, take the antibiotics "preventatively" and go back for my follow up, but I'm starting to not want to go back. Does anyone know a gentle gynocologist in Southern California, I'll drive where ever if it's a really good one! I'm debating about flying back to Nashville, TN where my mom's doctor who is super gentle.

o.O
Hi honey! I am NOT from California, but had the EXACT same problem! So what I did was phone my local Womens Health Centre/Hospital and ask them for a "Gentle and Caring Doctor" The nurses that work there are ALL fully aware of how each doctor is and who better to get advice from! The lady told me about mine and I haven't looked back since! He used to say "OH!!! You poor thing that must hurt!!!!"! I was in shock that he "GOT IT!" So ask friends and nurses, other women will ALWAYS be on your side about finding a good doctor! Good luck! When do you go for the ultrasound by the way!? Is it a Transvaginal/Pelvic one? IF it isn't I want you to ask for one and DONT take NO for an answer OK?

It is transvaginal and it is scheduled for May 5th. Thank you!

My mom had the same problem - she was so mad at the gyno's she would see. it was always painful and sometimes would knick her inside and she would bleed a little.

She finally found a good doc who told her it's important to tell EVERY doctor to be careful because she has a tilted uterus. There's nothing wrong with her uterus (she had 2 kids and it's very normal), but it just means the uterus is in a different position than expected. The doctor then knows to put it in a specific way.

Hope that helps!

I'm so happy, but not, to read about the absolute pain from the plastic speculum! I gave birth to my son naturally and he was just short of 10lbs, 42 years ago and I have NEVER had this amount of pain during a pap, it was awful and hopefully (due to my age) this is my last pap! This "plastic" speculum must have been designed by a man, as a woman would never want this. Hopefully, someone will come up with a better speculum, and I'm forever grateful but it's bad enough we ladies have to have our boobs squished into a hamburger patty trying to have our (grateful for), mammograms!
