Wow! This just happened to me again today - and has happened now 3 times in the last month, so I decided to check it out. I'm relieved that I'm not "weird" in that several others have experienced it, but I wish there was a diagnosis!

Mine usually happens in my pinky, but can happen in any finger, or as in the case tonight, my thumb. It can happen when I clap or when I tug on my dog's leash or when I grab a pot handle or door handle, etc. It starts out with a burning and itching feeling and then a lump or swelling, bruise and pain. Ice helps and it everything is fine in a couple of days. I do plan to ask my doctor next time I go in! I hope they have a more satisfactory answer for me!

Hmmm No answers here but good to know I am not alone! I am in relatively good health, 40 years old, and this has been happening to me on and off for about 4 years.

My friend has a very bruised finger and we dont know what to do. We have cheer practice tomorrow and she said it really hurts. She cant go to the doctor until wednesday. Thats all they had open. It is some what swollen and it hurts a little bit when she moves it. She can move the knuckle but not the upper knuckle. She wants to know if by any chance that it will not be broken. And if so how long will it take to heel. How do we treat it until she goes to the doctor on wednesday!!!!

This just happened to me also. I am 42 years old and have had this happen once or twice a year for the past 10 years or so. My mother, who is 71, also has this problem a couple times a year. It is comforting to know that SO many people have had this problem. I have never went to a doctor about this but would also like to know the root cause.

Hm well I am 24 and this continuously happens to my middle finger. I don't remember smashing it or anything. For a couple of weeks now, it will grow a small bump if I hit it wrong- sometimes it throbs so badly that I cry! Makes me kinda want to chop off the finger or something. Weird stuff.

I have had this problem as well (periods of time when opening a door, picking up something or grabbing something causes a vessel in one of my fingers to burst, generating a swollen, bruised and painful finger) and occasionally it happens to my toes as well. I have tried to photograph it and get into see my doctor in order for her to get an idea of what it looks like, but she is dumbfounded by it. I tried to track if it was happening around my period (anemia? hormonal thing?) but it doesn't synch up that way. Then, I realized that I was on Vioxx for 3 1/2 years (for a computer use injury) and that one of the problems, besides severe heart tissue damage, with that anti-inflammatory drug was that it also weakened the arteries and veins of many of the users. I suspect that it could be the culprit, but I also have read that a low intake of Vitamin K and the B vitamins could be the cause for excessive bruising. Anybody learn anything like this about their swelling finger bruises? Oh, I am 44 years old - and have had this for about 5 years now.

This can't cure the underlining cause for any of you but this product called BruiseMD can definitely help lessen the bruising that occurs for you. I take it because I get injured a lot playing soccer and it works great for me. I'd say my bruises heal twice as fast as they did before I found it. BruiseMD is also made of natural ingredients so it is non-toxic. I also take it prior to games and it seems to help reduce the number of bruises I get (I'm not kidding).

I have had this for about 5 years. First it was the bruising, sudden painful little blood vessels popping on the interior side of my fingers. By the time the first year had gone by, I was diagnosed with Raynauds Syndrome or Phenomenon (each Doc seems to have a different term) Raynauds causes your your fingers to suddenly turn pale white and go numb. Touching something cold causes the blood vessels in your fingers to contract, which does not allow blood to flow through them (my steering wheel in the winter does it everytime).

Now that the same effect is moving into the knucles where my hand and fingers meet, I am going to go to an RA specialist. One Dr said that excessive caffine can be a contributing factor to Raynauds, but I thing the sudden bruising that came before has to have something to do with it.

:-( :-(
Well it just happened to me about 10 minuets ago. kind of a freaky thing. It has happened before. To me it starts out feeling like a bee sting. It happened when I was carrying out the trash can. Go figure, now it looks like a spider bite or something with swelling. but no nothing bit me. it also happens when I clap my hands. I don't know what it is called, but I know I don't like it.

I have the exact same thing. This is the second time it's happened to me. The first time, the vein popped when I pulled on a door handle and a bruise developed that went away a within a few days. The lump didn't come back right away. It's probably been about 6 months. Now it's back and it's interesting that this is not as unusual as I'd have thought. It's almost like a varicose vein or a blood clot or something. Should I pop it again? Should I take aspirin to thin my blood? Any one find out what this is yet?

I have had this problem for a few years, my doctor doesn't think it is serious. I have found that stress does seem to affect this more often.

I'm 35 and this has been happening to me for 10 years.... about 4 times a year. It happens when I'm either sitting or walking, neither doing or touching anything. My vein will pop up real big and the only way to stop the pain is to push on it and pop the vessel. Of course then it leaves me with a big bruise. It happened today and I've never seen it this bad. My finger is swelled up twice it's size, it's hot and very black. It's so hard it feels like there's a rock in it! I worry that it could be a cholesterol blockage and what happens when it breaks free and goes to my heart or brain? I really hope someone can find an answer to this. Unless you have it happen to you, you can't imagine how painful it is.

I, too, am... about 35 ;-) okay 37, and I've had this and similar on and off my whole life. I am compelled to explain... When I was younger, I'd get one tiny little itchy spot on my pointer finger first or second knuckle (it would switch) like an itchy single spec of white-ish/clear poison ivy, but under all of my skin and wouldn't burst (gross, I know, sorry) but it also hurt like I had a tiny shard of glass was in it as well. It would disappear within the day. I used to think it was too much salt the day before because my knuckle felt "salt swollen" if you know what I mean? =) I I started with this because of the same sensation... I'd occasionally got large hives on my upper torso and back - maybe three times in my life when I was a teen, but they haven't happened since I was 17. (The only other skin "issue" I've encountered - maybe some of you have similar too...?)

Now that I'm... *sigh* getting older, other strange things are happening out-of-the-blue that I am noting... finger bruises being one (or three in te past two months). First time I hit my pointer finger knuckle a few weeks back on a cabinet corner - you know, in a hurry to get laundry cleaned on my days off so I can clean-up after my children before I take them shopping for "jeans"... sorry, I am a dork sometimes - making this fun =) Well when I hit my knuckle it made me reminisce of the days of old - the painful swelling and sensation was identical to those other pains!! I correlate the two because of the same painful sensation under my skin, not the bone, - intense, but not like another poor soul on this messageboard who considers "cutting [his/her] finger off" but painful nonetheless and under the skin/and surrounding the skin on my fingers. Second time I was turning the doorknob at work and got my thumb. Oooooh this one hurt and was hot and swelled instantly. Turned purple within the hour and hurt for two days but was sensitive for nearly 10 days. Third time, last week (three days ago) I tapped out my razor on my hand in the shower - okay there's a visual for ya! I'm Italian and it's Spring! Imagine THAT! hehehehehe JKJKJK okay, seriously... I got a massive purple bruise on the underside of my middle finger - it was instantaneous like the other two times... I don't bruise easy!! I'm American Italian with less Irish! This is a fairly pretty color, but not quite what I'm going for this Spring. ;-)

Mom says... Hey, come on now, she raised 11 children, so I think she's capable of giving sound advice... MOM SAYS =) it's lack of Vitamin C and possibly also Iron. I'm a little less than a social drinker because I don't really go out much (okay, not much in the cold winter - I hibernate, brrrrrrrr!) I have ADD and take Ritalin (can you tell? hehe) and I smoke. I come from healthy stock, but have heart disease in very close, very recent family history... dad and big brother... within six years =(.

I'll take some "C" and make some delish spinach salads and come back to report.

Be kind and considerate to others - all the time. Especially when driving - letting that guy in won't hold you up any longer than if you don't. =)

My 11 year old son has this problem in his middle finger at the base of it. A bruise come up and his finger swells, but there is a small lump under the skin even when the bruise has faded. His GP (we are in England) thinks it is a cyst or ganglion but he says that my son may have to have it removed as this keeps happening to him. So check it out, cyst or ganglion, you never know it might be the answer you were looking for. ;-)
