I recommend applying a little pressure to the tonsil on the side that hurts as it may be a tonsil stone. Don't crush it if you find it they smell awful. Lol

I have the same problem, only on the left side. Had three different antibiotics and was in the hospital Dec.17-19, 2012.
Still have the pain (Jan.3.,2013) and am concerned because all these antibiotics didn't help and I am getting weak from fighting the pain--I have not had a good appetite since this started. For a while had great difficult swallowing--now I swallow with care. I would appreciate an answer to me re: these symptoms--Never had this before.

If you went to the doctor and were diagnosed with a virus you shouldn't have been given anti-biotics.   Stop going to Jiffy Lube for medical advice.

Go see an ENT specialist if you haven't done so already. Could save your life.

I just went to the doctor today for this very problem.  A low grade fever and intense throat pain on the right side started for me two days ago.  She diagnosed a peritonsillary abscess, which basically just means I have a bacterial infection in the area around one tonsil.  She prescribed antibiotics, but I guess I could also get it drained.  She said the telltale sign was that it was only on one side, so I think the tonsils may be the culprit here for a lot of people!

Green tea (bags) will bring down the swelling and open up your throat pathways. It also reduces any other inflammation within your body. Also try to eat things that do not cause inflammation such as dairy products and anything with heavy oil in it.

I have had similar issues since I was a kid only mine would progress to early stage and sometimes full blown pneumonia.
Panic attacks every night from not being able to breathe properly or sleep.
Doctors never really understood what caused this condition and they would prescribe steroids which really didn't help too much. I finally went online and researched every stage of these conditions and found out that I was experiencing inflammation causing my insides to swell up which was causing my throat to do the same.
The antidote was to go on a non inflammation diet which consists of drinking green tea (2-4 cups a day) and eating walnuts and apples. Within the first 24 hours I felt 80% better and by the 7th days was completely cured. I have continued the green tea in my diet and I have been symptom free for 4 years now.
Of course I am not living off of walnuts and apples, but I do incorporate it into my meals when ever I can.
I have referred green tea to many sick people even cancer patients. It has helped many.

Don't take antibiotics unless a doctor has CONFIRMED with a culture that it is Strep. There is a good chance it is a viral infection, which is only strengthened by anti-biotics!! The best thing to do is just gargle with salt water, drink lots of fluids, and sleep a lot... Ibuprofen will help the swelling go down for 1-2 hours if you need to be up and about. Be careful with excessive draining of the nasal passages by way of throat... that can make the problem worse. AVOID ANYTHING WITH SUGAR IN IT, even fruit juices. I am skeptical of this 100% pomegranate thing. Do not eat anything dry or oily. Soup with noodles is nice. And try to digest your food before going to sleep... when you go to sleep with a full tummy the stomach acid can work its way up to your throat.

This is all a summation of days of research and personal experience... I have this problem right now (swollen glands, especially the left gland. A slight cough that appeared on the third day). But my throat is feeling better than yesterday. It feels a little like strep, except when I had strep the swollen glands were covered in white dots. Now they are just red.

I have the exact same problem right now. And I had the same problem about 3 years ago. It happened two or three times that year and after the last episode I went to the doctor. I was concerned because the swollen gland or lymph node was in the exact same spot as my carotid artery and every time I felt the swelled area, I could feel my blood pulsing through the carotid artery. The doctor ordered a CAT scan, which revealed nothing abnormal. The problem eventually went away, but now it's back again. I have found that taking 2 Ibuprofen significantly reduces the pain and lets me swallow again. But I am having to say on the Ibuprofen or the pain comes back.
