I had this same issue. I noticed a little white dot under my skin a few weeks ago, maybe almost a month or so ago. I thought it was some sort of little egg, or that I had hurt myself with a fish hook (I noticed it on a fishing trip) or maybe a pimple. I left it alone but a small calloused bump form around it from me poking at it and it began to feel sore, this morning when I looked at it it looked like It had grown a little bigger. I cleaned some sewing needles and nail clippers and just clipped at the skin around it until finally it popped. Milky-liquid came out of it and there is a blister-like empty hole left behind. It definitely feels a lot better now.

I know this may be late, but from what I have read, most of the situations here sound like a bursa has formed. It's not a bad thing. The body naturally forms these where it needs them often in places of friction.

Guys, the best way to pop it is with a sharp pointy knitting needle. i had it twice and sorted it out that way because the longer you live and expect it to go away, it just gets bigger and painful. so pop and get whatever waterish yellow thing inside out

hello everyone!, i just was just reading and i performed a little surgery on the one i have, there was
something inside as i squeezed it something pushed its way to the surface like a small soft sliver of some sort. So i guess along the way something got in and got infected, its been a half hour and feels better i can push on it no problem other then the cut its much better already

Yes I've had one for years my writing index finger have been treating it like a wart but it isn't. Sore but white ball rises to the surface and you can squeeze it like s hard zit.

Hi, all,

There seems to be a lot of panic over this hard, white bump that rises beneath the skin in guitarists and other hand-intensive professionals. While some of these may have infection/splinter/surgical potential, the most likely cause is that these are calluses. Calluses are the body’s natural protection against frictional damage. They are thickened, insensitive skin sites that develop where skin is most likely to be abraded (such as the fingertips of a guitarist, as the strings vibrate and can damage to the fingertips if not defended). I used to have calluses on my feet from walking around barefoot on gravel as a child. Yes, they look like hard zits, but they’re just skin.

The other likely cause is blisters. I noticed small, white bumps on the side of my pointer finger, and upon using a hypodermic needle (please, use the proper tools when slicing open your skin) and squeezing, I discovered that it was, indeed, a blister. I’m treating it with antibiotic ointment and a band-aid.

I hope this clears up this extravaganza for the majority of y’all. Obviously, if it turns out to be worse than a mere callus or blister, see your doctor. Otherwise, Occam’s Razor dictates that the simplest solution is the most likely solution.

It is actually a type of mild dermatological angioneuroma that is in the sub-dermal area of your skin. It will typically come and go with stress and also pressure on your skin...like using a tool or pushing a stroller for periods of time. It is NOT contagious and is not going to spread from one person to another no matter what you do. It's caused by small damaged areas of your nerve bundles (and the vessels that travel with them) in your fingers (and possibly feet). It will typically stick around for 2-3 weeks and then just resolve on their own. They are mildly painful (due to the nerves in them) and can bleed like crazy if you cut into them (due to the vessels that follow and feed the nerves). The best way to avoid them (even though this is much easier to say than do) is to try to arrange or change things in your life to be less stressed out. I got them once in a while in school and also have been getting them again for the past year during an incredibly unfortunate divorce. (wife walked out on me and our 2 year old boy at the beginning of this year). STRESS is the trigger for me, but it could be other things or combination of things for others. I'm learning how to manage my life as a working single father and that's why they are popping up now and then. Just look at them as a warning that you need to de-stress your life. They will go away after several weeks. Also, stop rubbing, pushing and poking them because they are essentially little damaged nerve bundles in your skin that you will inflame and damage more if you irritate them. Just try to ignore them and they will eventually resolve. No amount of creams, steroids, antivirals, antibacterials, etc. will do anything to help them go away faster. As mentioned before, alcohol based hand sanitizers can help dry and toughen your skin (thicken your epidermal layer), which can help them be less sensitive...but it doesn't actually help them resolve any faster. Patience and de-stressing your life is the answer.

I recently just found the same white circular lump under my right middle finger. I went only to try and find some pictures of something similar but to no avail. Thankfully I found this site. It has been sore now for a couple of days and the only strenuous hand work I have been doing is picking up pecans which isn't that punishing to hands so doubt I would develop calluses from that. I think I am going to try using a needle and see if that works because it really hurts from using this finger at all

I’m reading these posts because I have their same thing too! My husband squeezed the effer out of it last night, he kept squeezing with nothing coming out. I almost had tears! This morning the base of my thumb and palm peach are swollen, looks like I’ve had a wasp bite! Anyway no one here has helped (thanks you lot!) however I may have a theory for the guitarists.... I am highly allergic to nickel! I mean if I wear any metal that contains nickel, I welt within 15 mins. If my jean buttons and studs touch my bare skin ie. hips from the inside of the pants, I welt. Earrings, rings, necklaces you name it! It might be the same on the guitar strings? It’s just a thought, lots of ppl are allergic but to different degrees but don’t know it. For the bodybuilder it may be the metal bar you’re lifting? I did a home test, which I don’t recommend, where my mum and I taped a nickel coin to my arm for 24 hours, I needed a quick answer for heart surgery options, and I have never been so sick in my life! I vomited for 4 days straight! I could only crawl to the bathroom. I had poisoned my body. Hence why the holes in my heart were stitched together rather than a device put into my heart. Just crossed my mind as I was reading this post. Good luck to all! Shell xx

I have the same too and I am not a guitarist. I have a hard 1-2 mm bump deep under the skin on my middle fingertip, left hand. When I press on it, it turns white. When it becomes painful on it own it is red. Normally it is not painful, except when I poke it or when the weather is very cold. I am very familiar with splinters, blisters, and bone fragments: this is not what is happening here. Unlike the other people that reported this, I remember when I got it. I slightly burnt my finger on the stove by accident and assumed it would go away in a few weeks. (that is what I remember) For the next few days afterwards, the amount of pain experienced was not proportionate to the injury. It has been over 5 years now and it is still exactly the same. If you are thinking it is a deep blister, you are wrong. I have tried to squeeze and dig it out with no success, going so far as to use a needle. I just end up feeling sick afterwards. When I bump into something with my fingertip the pain is very intense. I have slight numbness from my fingertips to my shoulder on a regular basis. If anyone can give me an answer I would be grateful.

Hi all, I have 1 on the side of both my little fingers. I don’t play guitar but I’ve had both of them since I was very little.. well over 20 years. I went to the doctor with them when we first saw them and they didn’t have a clue what they were. Mine aren’t sore unless I press them so don’t bother me all.. they’re just so weird. I thought I was the only one though

Helloo all
I also have the same little 1cm white painful outgrowth on the first joint of my right middle finger. I am not a guitarist.... professionally being a dentist ...it is also a reason for my psychologic disturbance. I have this from the past 20 days n find it hesitating to operate it myself.
Anyone knowing the cause or treatment... Do help out.
