Hello,
I'm 25 years old. The last time I have gotten my pap test was 4 years ago when I started my birth control. Since then, I have had sex only with my boyfriend and he has only had me as a partner.
For myself, pap tests cause extreme pain. Each and every time I have gone for one, no matter who did it, I had cramping and burning for a couple of days. It was horrible.
I have been putting off having a test for that reason.
I have been reading online, and found a long thread of comments from people saying that these tests are unnecessary. That only a small percentage actually get cervical cancer, and that it is possible the scraping of the cervix could actually cause bacteria to breed.
I would like to know if I am doing myself severe harm in not going for a pap.
So far I have been able to avoid it by getting my birth control perscriptions from clinics, and lying about when I went for my last pap.
My only worry is that I have been smoking for a year now which I read is a problem, and that my boyfriend once had genital warts and I believe I did as well -which as I know of is HPV. But, neither of us has had symptoms for years now, and my symptoms only lasted a week. I believe my body fought off the virus (if it even was hpv).
Thanks!

After the first or second pap that had these uncomfortable side effects, have you asked your gynecologist why this happens and can it be avoided? They won't know that it's painful or that there is any problem if you don't tell them. And I think that's what you will need to do because you are under bigger risk because of the HPV (nobody can't fight off this virus, that's why it might cause problems - your immune system is just keeping it under control so you don't have warts). I think that you realize yourself that if you are under some risk of cervical cancer that it's better to make sure that everything is OK. And that doesn't mean that you can't ask first why this burning happens after pap.

I told them this after the first time I had a PAP, and they just shrugged and said they had no idea and didn't seem to care. It seems to be worse after they scrape the cervix.
Truth be told, I have almost no chance of having children either way. If I lose my uterus to cancer, it is not so much a big deal. Also the fact I do not have much of a yearning to have children. I lost one of my ovaries to a cyst, and my other one is completely bent and warped. I am only keeping it so I do not have to take hormone replacement pills.

Had a pap 2 weeks ago and now I'm having pain and bloating. I went back and was told by nurse that practitioner tore my cervix in 2 places. What should I do? Can I sue them?
