I have had the same problem for several years and now my son has started having it too. It happens more seldom if I never wash dishes without wearing gloves, avoid handling detergents in general, and use hand cream regularly. If it gets bad, the only thing that helps is a good cream and bandaids.

Use hydrogen peroxide on the peeling area several times a day making sure that HP gets under the nail. I apply the HP with a Q-tip. This works for me

Hello All,

I have just developed the same problem as everyone: skin starts peeling around the fingertips, especially right below the end of the fingernail....eventually leading to the whole of my both hands peeling off.

Im 29, and this is the first time it has happened to me...it barely painful (only when pulling off skin, also its fresh and sensitive skin underneath), and i cant seem to figure out why its happening right now in my life, after 29 years of no skin problems whatsoever...

A couple things i thought worth mentioning: I went camping about 3 weeks ago, and upon returning I got very sick (flu-like symptoms eg:fever, aching, chills, etc)..after getting over that sickness, 5 days later my hands started peeling...I still have a sneaking suspiscion it may be Lyme Disease, after all all these symptoms seemed to pop up after a weekend of camping and getting bit by various evil little bastids. After a little research on the web, i also noticed a small percentage of Lyme sufferers had this skin peeling disorder on their hands. Anyone else? Feel free to contact me at rob_asp(at)yahoo.com

I am so glad to know others can relate to this...my problem is on my right thumb. My PCP thought it was fungal, but the cream he gave me did nothing. After a few trips to the dermatologist, she has called it "hand excema" and prescribed Topicort ointment (a steriod).

So, here's the trick: apply the ointment at night, and wrap the affected finger with plastic wrap. It sounds (and looks) crazy, but it helps to "drive in" the medication and keep it from rubbing off, and I notice improvement in a few days. She also suggested using a hand protectant during the day such as TheraSeal cream, or something with dimethicone to block out moisture and irritants, which also helps a lot especially in cold weather. Finally, when the skin is cracked it REALLY HURTS there is a product by Nexcare called "skin crack care" that looks like a bottle of clear nail polish. I love this stuff! It coats the cracked area (keeping the raw skin protected and minimizing more peeling) yet it is more functional than wearing a band-aid on your thumb for the rest of your life.

My empathy to all of you...if anyone has other ideas please share them!

Wow, like one of the last posts, great to see lots of folks with similiar distress, but distressing that none can post solutions. I wonder if any of you experience a puckering of the fingetip skin just prior to the peeling phase - as if you've just gotten out of the bathtub. This combines with numbness on the first digit of the fingers, then peeling begins and the fingers are VERY sensitive. This affects just the touch side of the hand, no fingernails are involved, however it is down to the ring area on both hands now. I am a holistic health practitioner and have been stumped and bothered by this recent ( 3 months) development on my hands.
I had a bout of strep throat 3 months ago, which can trigger finger peeling in susceptible people that usually clears in 1 week - I thought this was my case, but no. I am intuitively feeling this is viral, especially seeing all of your reports on allopathic treatment for fungus has gained nothing. I am beginning oral herbal treatment with Lomatium, Usnea, Pau d' Arco, Lemon Balm, Osha Root, and Propolis Gum, and Red Clover Blossom. Will be taking this 3x a day for the next 4-6 weeks. I am aslo applying fresh aloe vera gel 3x daily. Water definately irritates my hands - no chemical cleaners or soaps in my home. However I am an avid gardener and this summer have not worn gloves while working the soil. Are others out there that are gardners as well? Many viruses are contracted this way. I'll let anyone know if the remedies work. Thanks!

I am so happy to see other people have what I have. My fingers do not go numb but they peel badly. It started about 4 years ago (I'm 43), and it is getting worse. It is mainly the thumb and forefinger and sometimes the middle finger. The skin gets very very tough and then starts to come off from under the finger nail. It peels away in a thick sheet of skin and under is raw sensitive skin. It is hideous and so embarrasing. I have tried prescription creams and even prescription steroid creams and nothing works. i am going right now to a doctor to see if I need to do PUVA treatments. has anyone heard of this? And does it work?

I too am 22 years old and have sore and peeling finger tips, that actually feel quite painful sometimes. I wondered various reasons for this but nothing out of the ordinary. But I have done some research and found that Viral Infections can be realted to this. I am just geting over a bad viral infection.

Try using Pure Vitamin E oil, by googling it on the net. Make sure it is Pure. THis will soothe and help the peeling greatly, as it the best natural remedy.

For those that have this problem and like me who is 22 years old also find it very discomforting. Try using Pure vitamin E oil, and only pure, google it.

I think it majke be related to a viral infection i am getting over.

Same thing happen to my boyfriend for years, he said it got better by itself over time since nothing the dermatologist prescribed worked... His hands still get dry and sometimes get bumps, but they no longer crack and bleed. Just try to keep your hands very moist especially in the winter... maybe use noscented lotions in case of an allergy, and use a lotion for healing or Extra dry itchy skin... I hope that at least helps a little!

I took up diving as a career a few years ago and my hands and feet went crazy. Any exposure to salt water results in intense peeling on palms and soles about 5 days later. I am also a guitarist, that's weird, I wonder if it's something in guitar strings?
This condition is a pain in the backside, to say the very least.

it seems like whomever suggested nickel is the cause might be onto something, as most guitar strings are nickel-plated

I'm 31 female and have had the same problem for about 3 years. I do not play the guitar.
It started with my right ring finger and now affects my right index finger as well. Only these two. First I feel the skin is all numb and thick. (Why? because its dead/dying.) and sure enough, it begins to peel away. Leaving new pink skin underneath but also a raw red border w/ the unaffected part of the finger. It's very irritating, unpleasant and embarrasing. The nail also looks ugly because the skin underneath part of it is peeling in this way and debris is building up. Once the sore border area heals the new pink skin is ok for a little bit and then the numb feeling begins again and the cycle repeats. I've never had a very long break. Its pretty much a constant thing
I work year-round in a very cold air-conditioned office. I don't know if thats related at all. I used to think it was psoriasis but it doesn't exactly fit that MO so I'm still searching for the answer. I've tried all the creams (prescription and otc) and so far nothing helps at all. I'm still (its been over 3 yrs) working on testing different things w/ my dermatologist. I'll try to let you know if we ever get to the bottom of it.

I'm 24 and have been experiencing the same thing on my right ring finger. The skin becomes numb and little brownish dots appear. A few days later, the skin cracks and peels revealing shrivelled unhealthy new skin which sometimes cracks and bleeds, sometimes is completely painless. It's been going on for some time now, I would say a few years. I'm not a guitarist and that finger has not been in contact with any surface more than any other finger (in fact I tend to favour it by avoiding using it). Like many other people, the cycle repeats every couple of weeks. I have troid steroid creams and a few other things with no success.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone in this weird problem, but it's hard to get doctors/dermatologists that I am having this relatively unique problem and that's not some normal skin problem as they just discount my comments.

I've read all the above posts, and I seem to have the exact same symptoms listed out... growing blister-like inflammation, numbness, dead skin, excessive peeling.

It repeats so often, and it tends to travel within the same areas on the end segments of both my thumbs on the pad and nail, my right index finger on the last 2 segments on the side of the thumb, and just recently two spots on the lower portion of my palm opposite the thumb. I also noticed peeling on 2 points of both the soles of my feet, but I'm not sure if its related yet.

When I talked to my doctor, it wasn't exhibiting the most noticeable symptoms (of course!) but i've been perscribed both Ketoconazole 2% and Hydrocortisone 2%, neither of which seems to work. They say to apply it 2 times a day which is nearly impossible because the cream doesn't absorb, so you'd need to wear comprehensive bandages close to all day. Maybe this is why the creams haven't worked, but I don't see a way around the problem.

I've been told that its probably a fungus, but what's curious is that it occurs in what appears to be symmetrical zones on both hands, and now feet. I'm inclined to think that its a disease or other internal affliction, but as has been said, doctor's apparantly don't know squat about it.

any other info would be greatly appreciated, this is annoying as hell!
