A lot of these symptoms seem like what I have been diagnosed with: keratolysis exfoliativa. My hands get little white spots and peel away from there. It has gotten so bad in the past that my entire palm on both hands peeled away. I haven't had any major problems in the past few years, besides minor peeling on one finger here and there, but recently it came back. Its stress related. What has worked for me in the past and I am confident will work again is: use Amlactin Cream and take vitamin A (10,000 I.U) daily when you see peeling. You can get the cream almost anywhere like Walgreens. I also use dish gloves when doing dishes, keep away from long exposure to water, put on some sort of hand cream directly after showering (I use this Ponds Dry Skin Cream). Basically, keep your hands from being dry at all times. Hope this helps and darn this condition, eh!

I am 27, and for some years now, I too have the same symptoms as mentioned for the last couple of years, and will try to type this as informative without drawing conclusions (since I would most likely be wrong), using the information I have read from other posts.

And have a few comments, I do not play instruments, but do type a lot at the keyboard. I also noticed that in college, I had the similar problem on my finger where I held my pen/pencil. And although it seems to be slightly seasonal when I was up north in the mountains, but now I am in phoenix, so it’s not that cold.

Also, as for stress, I took Zoloft because I was always nervous and anxious and had to stop taking it as it made me extremely tired, but I have noticed that my fingers were the worst before I stated it, and have now slightly gotten worse since I stopped.

Also, as mentioned by another poster about bumps on his arms, I had a lot of bumps on my legs that I had gotten from wrestling in high school, and I have been able to control that through using anti-bacterial soap in the shower. But wonder if that could be related to something.

Also, I do wash my hands frequently, and my hands are dry, as the back of my hands also crack often on the knuckles. I put lotion on whenever I can, but feel all it does is makes my hands worse when I forget to use it. Also, after reading this topic I am thinking that it is likely related to a problem I have on my little toe were it is constantly cracking and peeling underneath the toe (which started long before my fingers, about 6-7 years ago), as well as cracking of my heels.

Also I do not take vitamins, nor eat healthy, but up until a couple of months ago was not overweight.

I have long tried to find a solution; I have two band aids on my fingers as I type this. I will try the fish oils, and let you know how it goes. Also I have been feeling fatigued of late and have been battling a cold/cough/sore throat, but have never really felt 100% since this started a few years back, and wonder if it is related to a virus.

I believe I am experiencing a similar problem. I went to one dermatologist who thought it was eczema. He gave me some ointment for my hands (prescription), stating that a normal eczema prescription cream for the body is not strong enough for hands. I'm still experiencing problems, but this might be something you guys could ask your doctors about.

As for guitar, that may well indeed be a factor for some of you. I used to play snare drum outside in the winter months, and I became accustomed to cracked skin on my fingers. Fingers just weren't built to take some of the punishment we put them through.

I've tried the hydrogen peroxide for about 1.5 months now.
It helped in the beginning, but now they're starting to peel and crack again.

Hi Everyone, thought i'd post back on my success!
My fingers haven't peeled a layer for almost a month now. Started taking Krill Oil capsules on the 7/2/07 and they are back to normal now 2/3/07, I can even do the dishes and wash without that soggy waterlog feeling on my skin. I haven't needed to use any hand cream for about 2-3 weeks and just can't belive the turn around, I thought i'd have this problem for years. I chose the krill oil due to it's high content of omega 3 (we get enough omega 6 from our normal oil and marg we use to cook with and it also had antioxidants in it.
so good luck to anyone who is going to give it a go

I have experienced identical symptoms as the rest & I have found (what I believe) to be the "disease" associated with these symptoms. It is called: "HERPETIC WHITLOW". It is a string of the herpes virus. I have always had cold sores (which is also a string of herpes) & now I have the fingertip issues. It is very painful & ugly, but I'm convinced that it is this Herpetic Whitlow. I haven't asked a doctor about it yet, but it is the only thing that makes sense to me....I will follow up & find out about various treatment...hey, maybe I need to just rub "Abreva" on it at the early stages...just a thought (worth trying).

Good luck to you all...it actually hurts to type this because of this problem..I hate it!!

I know how you all feel. I have this problem also. Colder weather is a factor. Mine started 2 weeks ago again and is now at the itchy blister phase. I have also notice an interesting fact. Do any of you get little blown taste buds at the tip of your toungue at the same time you get the hand issues? Everytime, I get the toungue thing first.....very painful little white, blown taste bud. Looks like a mini cold sore and hurts a lot worse. Then the fingers and hands start. Mine have been completely corelated with stress. No ecsema, VD, cold, or otherwise. Striktly stress. I get far worse symptoms at the same time.......check you temperature when these things start. Normal is 98.2 - 98.6. Mine goes down to 96 range at the exact time the toungue and hands start thier thing. Also, check your blood pressure at your local pharmacy including Wal-mart. Use the automatic reader machine. If your pressure is up......most likely cause is stress. My wife gets them to but it's a rash on the back of her neck that goes away when the stress is reduced. High stress.......rash hits again. Stress rashes are very common. They just present differently for different people.

I hope this helps.

No it's not "Herpetic Whitlow", as ours is not a painfull condition - our fingers would just shed their skin like a snake shed's it's skin, completely different.[/img]

I have read many of the posts and am amazed how similar some are to my symptoms. I am a 47 y.o. male and had surgery to my left shoulder for a complete torn rotator cuff about 14 months ago. Since then I haven't been able to sleep on my left arm because my hand and fingers would get numb within a couple minutes. Not the same so far but read on! About 8 months ago I noticed my left thumb from the nail to the pad and left hand fore-finger joint that can be touched with my thumb had developed very thick skin. Then within a couple days it started to crack and peel leaving very thin new skin. This process is only painful when I peel it up to the good skin and the area has always been the same size on both.

I had thought that somehow it was caused from the surgery but after googling for this subject I realized it wasn't. I am worried more now! I have read how some think it is virul while others said it was caused from something in the environment. I might add I used to play guitar but stopped about three years ago. So, these digits haven't been any closer to nickle than any of my others. I will go see my Dr. but from what I read that may not help. Please, if any of you found a cure that has lasted, post something. I will be checking back often. Thanks

I have no answers, nor can I find help.

I have used:
cortizone creams
fungal creams

The latest dermatologist said it was stress related and prescibed
Temovate ointment (the most effective, but still temporary).

I recently took a 2 week vacation, and it was much worse during that time (go figure). I have been very stressed because I quit smoking.

It was 85% healed last fall, but shortly after I started playing guitar again, it broke out again. First on all of my guitar fingers, then to my other hand as well. It seems to really like places wiht callus. It attacks my fingertips when they become callused from playing guitar. Also, if I do a lot of yard work and get callus, it attacks those too. It likes callus, but is not exclusive to callus.

I am 45 and healthy.
I have had outbreaks for 20 years.

I am 32 years old, I live in new england, during this winter I have noticed that the skin on my finger tips has been continually peeling leaving very sensitive red skin exposed. There is a warm tingle sensation that stays with my fingers. I noticed that the cold weather has been definately an irritant. Any body have an idea what causes this? I work with computers all day, so typing can sometimes be painful/discomfortable.

Thanks

I first experienced skin-peeling problems on both hands which include both of my left and right palms and all my fingers. I can say my whole entire hands are peeling. It started when I took up bodybuilding which I lifted really heavy weights with my bare hands without wearing any gloves.
Nothing bad happens until two years later into the sport, I noticed dead skin started appearing on both of my entire hands and cracked very easily resulting in a really ugly appearance. Just imagine seeing your entire hands with white, dead and cracked skins forming up relentlessly.
It started to get worse as time past and forced me to quit the sport in order to give my hands time to heal. I t became so bad to such an extent when doing simple chores like tying my shoelaces, fixing my furniture and changing clothes simply tear my skin apart! The ugly sight of my 'dead' hands became such an irritation to me that I resorted to spending hours a day peeling off all the dead skin on my hands each time I return home from work! As a result, my hands became pink and really rough. I got so embarass everytime people asked me what actually had happened to my hands hands and I actually lied to them that it was simply a minor fungus infection which actually is not! I don't feel itchy at all! It is simply dead skin! So far, I had tried moisturising cream for years which did not help at all! This condition still stay with me today Can anyone give any advice to solve this everlasting irritating condition?

Every time I eat crawfish my fingers get really red and start to swell. I put lotion on them constantly but it really dosnt help. After two days they start to peel and get red again. The peeling dosnt stop until maybe 3 weeks later. Ive always said it was the seasoning that made my hands do that. It dosnt hurt me internally or anything it just makes my hands and fingers get red and start to swell. What do you call this? what do I need to do about it??
