I have had this same experience. And have found no doctor or dentist who knew the reason behind it. It has been over 12 yrs sence this began. And with my experience I found childrens colgate works best for me. Anything else continues to make the mucus membranes shed.
My Doctor now believes I have an allergy to something in most toothpastes. But haven't decided exactly what it is. Tom's of Maine which is subpose to be all natural also makes it peel. My childrens tooth paste has been the best. And mouthwash has no effect. Best of luck!

This peeling of the mouth is also a symptom of Candida. This is when the body produces to much yeast in men and women.

I've suffered with this for many years.  No way do I have HIV or any sexually transmitted disease (you need to have sex or a blood transfusion for that!) and I've had treatments for candida (thrush) because the "all knowing" doctor refused to acknowledge that it could be anything else.  Recently my tongue has really started to feel burnt all the time, as though I've been drinking tea that's far too hot, and it's becoming unbearable.  The skin comes off in sheets and is driving me mad.  The worst thing is that food no longer tastes good.  I don't smoke and hardly ever drink alcohol, so neither of those could be causing it either.  So, it looks like it has to be the toothpaste.  Unfortunately, although I live in London, and have loads of shops to choose from, finding a toothpaste that doesn't contain bleach or flouride is almost impossible.  Even Biotene has floride, unless you're lucky enough to find the one shop in a thousand which stocks the only one in the range which doesn't.  Why does everything have to contain chemicals these days?

I woke up with this problem this morning, Just inside my lips, top and bottom. Not very pleasant experience. I'm betting it had something to do with the large packet of salt and vinegar chips a devoured the night before. I'll wait a week or so and devour another bag to see if it happens again, I have also changed toothpaste but I do remember the chips zinging my lips, yummy. I don't smoke and I don't have any health issues at all, touch wood.

Only/Always happens to me when I eat Lay's Salt and Vinegar potato chips.

Side note, I have what people call the "green touch" in that I turn real silver green because of the higher than normal amount of acid in my sweat.

I've tried eating a large packet of Salt and Vinegar chips at various times and they have had the same effect. I've decided to stop testing the salt and vinegar chip test though as now I'm a little worried what it might do to my stomach. I can't say I've ever turned silver green, infact I think I'm the opposite as I've been wearing silver earings for the last few years and they have been great.

I have also noticed that my neice seems to become overactive when she eats the chips, they don't seem to have the same effect on me.

I wonder if people could be bitting their inner lips when they are asleep.

i woke up with peeling and shedding of the skin inside my cheeks and gums.  it grows right back but sheds again and again and my mouth becomes dry and lips peel also.  i have top and bottom dentures and clean them at night with polident.  when i take out my dentures, my mouth feels slightly better.  putting them in seems to cause sheeding again.  wondering if there might be some connection with the denture material and this condition.  anyone have anything similar to this with dentures?  help, i am so depressed about this condition.  i am constantly aware of my mouth, gums and lips.

I too have dentures and the lip/mouth peeling. I have been lucky on occasion to be able to leave my dentures out for a 16 hr (or so) but this doesnt seem to help my problem. I have just read it could be caused by toothpastes, caffeine, vitamin b2 deficiencies, bacteria or yeast. I am going to an oral surgeon tomorrow hoping for an answer (doctors dont seem to have much clue to this problem). I am going to start eliminating caffeine (I drink energy drinks on a regular basis), to see if this helps. If noit Im going to start taking vitamin b2 then changing toothpastes one suggested solution at a time to see what works. Good luck with your problems and I will share what helps me if anything

I have been suffering with my lips peeling - off and on for the last few months. The post above relating to eating salt and vinegar pringles has dropped a penny in my head. I have been eating the walkers baked salt and vinegar crips thinking that they were a little more healthy than deep fried ones over the last few months so I will stop eating them for a while and see if this could be the solution. Hopefully this will be the solution,

I also have this problem. In addition to my cheeks and lips peeling I have a whitish tounge. I think in my case it may be cause by the fact that I have a salivary stone which is causing me to produce less saliva.  I noticed that the peeling lips will go away for a week and then I'll wake up one morning and it will be back for a day or two causing me to believe I'm irritating it somehow.  I ate a bunch of Salt and Vinegar chips last night as well (noticed a lot of ppl mentioning that). So that could be it. I also smoke marijuana, which I'm beginning to think could be contributing to the problem.

Also I forgot to mention that I went for an STD test which came back clean.

I had a sloughing off of the skin on the inside of my lower lip, and a burning irritated tongue with little white spots on it. I used VINCE GUM AND MOUTH CARE. It is made by Lee Pharmaceuticals, South El Monte, CA 91733. A pharmacy should be able to get it for you. It is a pink powder you mix with warm water and swish in the mouth. My condition cleared up in two days!

I just went to my 6 month cleaning, and I mentioned the sloughing off of skin inside my cheeks to her. Since I was going for a cleaning, I obviously used commercial toothpaste, not the baking soda/salt I normally use Before I went.

She told me I have an allergy to sls, sodium lauryl sulfate, which makes sense, because I can only use natural shampoos, and only certain toothpastes. My allergy seemed to happen overnight. I had a HUGE amount of hives one day, inside of mouth sloughing off, and hives, itches, cracked mucous membranes, and not One symptom even remotely close before. I thought it was the mint, because I used to grow ompletely organic peppermint, and my fingers would blister when I picked it. I just rubbed my toothpaste on one side of my mouth, and some crest 3d White on the other side. Looks like I am allergic. I urge you to be aware. No one seems to know how these allergens build up in your system, but they do seem to.

I've had this problem for years.  I'm thinking it is the toothpaste.  I always used Colgate Total Plus Whitening, but about a month ago I switched to Biotene and Sensodyne and the peeling stopped.   Then this week I started using Crest Clinical Gum Protection and the peeling has started back up.  So, I'm guessing the peeling is caused by whatever the whitening ingredient is.
