Good to find this thread, as I was afraid it was just me and it was some lurking cancer!

I 've had a burning/tingling/pins and needles sensation at a small area in-between towards the end of my right shoulder blade and my spine, that at times it could get worse and spread to the right side of my upper back. I am right-handed. No rash, no blisters, no lumps, nothing.

I got so freaked out a few weeks ago that I went to the general doctor (GP) at urgent care, because my partner told me it looked a bit swollen. The GP looked young and inexperienced, but looked at the area and didn't notice anything suspicious. She did ask me about a mole there, but I've had it for years and it's benign, no change. She asked questions to see if it could be rash-less shingles but this condition involves a LOT of pain, and I don't really feel any. She also asked me about possible diabetes or other symptoms such as fatigue or cognitive problems, but I've had none (be aware that if you have other symptoms as well it could be the start of MS or Lupus, so you need to see a doctor). Finally, she told me not to worry as she couldn't think of it being something worrying, to take ibuprofen for a few days and go back if it didn't improve.

It seems to me that as others say, this area is prone to nerve irritation and susceptible to 'notalgia paraesthetica.' The latter fits the symptoms exactly, but for me the question is what triggers this nerve irritation. I think the answer is different for everyone. For some is muscle injury; for others is an old case of shingles; for others is a disk hernia somewhere in the spine; for others is an irritated mole or a sunburn.

In my case, the symptoms started last winter (2015) when I started using an electric blanket (called heated mattress pad in some countries)!! I like to put it on maximum to heat the bed well, and then I get into bed and turn it off or turn it down. After using the blanket for about a month, the itching/slight burning started on that spot. Initially I didn't give much attention. Then I looked at my back, thinking there would be some visible irritation, but nothing. When I stopped using the blanket, symptoms gradually went away during the summer. This winter, I started using the blanket again, and I got the symptoms again! When I freaked out, I stopped using it and symptoms improved in a week. Now I get them very occasionally. As the article on notalgia parasthetica says, I did feel better when I applied vaseline, body lotions or cooling spray, indicating some nerve-skin involvement, despite the fact that my skin looked absolutely normal, without any burn or rash or redness.

Symptoms return (but not that bad) if I have a bad posture, slouching, or lying with my back against the sofa arm, when standing to wash the dishes, or when carrying bags on that side. So, weak back muscles do play a role as well, and it's not a coincidence that many of us suffer from a sedentary lifestyle.

So my advice is: moisturise the skin in that area, use numbing creams or ice-sprays for muscle injury if needed, and try to figure out what you do that triggers the condition, because only then you can reverse it. Of course, if you have the means, you can always go and have an MRI. Be aware of the possibility of diabetes or lupus or MS if you are generally feeling unwell, and if the condition happens all the time without improvement.

I noticed a tingling in my back a couple of months ago (few inches down from left shoulder). At first I thought it was something stuck in my t-shirt or the detergent I was using, but then noticed it was happening when I didn't have a top on.

I checked in the mirror and it happens to be in the same place as a dodgy looking mole I was told to keep an eye on in January (this was the first time I'd located the mole on my own back, before that I just had a close-up photograph of it). Is this worth making an appointment for?

Hi! I have the EXACT same thing!! Loads of awful tngling in my back, upper left hand side by my mole - I'm worried that my mole might have something to do with it! Did you get yours removed for safety or was there something wrong?

Do you still have this problem? I have got it too on my left shoulder blade for over 3 weeks no and is starting to bother me

Tingly/crawling/fluid/bubbly feeling, no pain. Under left-shoulderblader(right handed) and I got the feeling it is in the surrounding muscle tissue below shoulderblade.
Been reading through some 18 pages now and it is comforting to find this forum. This is my story:
Had some pain after sleeping(backache), few more nights came and I cough rather hard and I had an intense pain, maybe cramp like feeling. Next day I decided to remove second mattress because of the insane softness I believed was causing the ache and it helped, the pain was almost gone just in one day after reducing softness. However this tingling, crawly feeling is what I am left with for months now and I am getting worried.

What I got in common with other posters here is that I sit a lot in front of computer(80% of day, rarely exercise) and at the time not have the comfy good chair I was used to, but I was sitting in a rather hard couch that I could feel having some stress on neck and back for some time(couple months). I also was under stress in the non physical way(job-related/lack of).

My guesstimate to problem: I need to straighten up my back and exercise more, not having a soft bed, get myself a comfy chair, also I should try to avoid stressful life situations and avoid anything that can be cough inducing.
(That or I got cancer or 100 other things that could match the symptoms of back pain)
Hope the information is helpful to someone in adding things up.

I had this same thing starting almost four years ago. I've been diagnosed with a B12 deficiency since then, and I noticed when I am taking B12, I don't have this problem. But when I get lazy and stop taking the B12, it comes back.

There are a lot of B vitamin deficiencies that involve the nerves. I take a b-complex now in addition to the B12.

Try taking a b-complex. B-vitamins are really important for nerve tissue. I had this same numb and tingling spot in my upper back, just to the left of my spine. It was there for months, then went away, then came back a few years later, right around the time I was finally diagnosed with B12 deficiency. I didn't make the connection with the numb spot and the B12 until I had been taking the B12 for a while, and then got lazy, the the numb spot returned. So now I take B12 plus b-complex, because generally if you are low in one b vitamin, you are low in all of them. And a deficiency in any of them can lead to neuropathy.

I have had a tingly/tickly feeling which covers approximately a 2" x 4" area vertically. It is about 2 inches to the left of my spine at the top. Sometimes it feels like something crawling over me, like someone said, ants crawling on you. The feeling isn't always the same. Sometimes I don't get it for days, then other times I might get it several times a day. Today it was the strongest feeling I've had. It doesn't hurt at all, but I'm curious as to what it is and worry a bit in case it is an indication of something more serious, or a warning that something worse may happen in the future.

Thanks guys for mentioning Vit B deficiency. I am taking metformin tablets for PCOS metabolic syndrome, and it's notorious for bringing Vit B and folic acid down, so is it a coincidence? Hmmm.... I used to take a Vit B tablet every day, but I have become lazy and don't take them often now. Maybe just once a week. When the symptoms had disappeared last year, I was taking a multi-vit every day for a few months.

You know I hadn't considered Vit B either. I didn't really think about it until now but my tingling started coming back a little while after I had my son and has been even stronger this time. But my whole pregnancy I took a prenatal every day. I felt like I had been going through long stretches without feeling tingling even when I had my daughter and prenatals very well may have been why.

I have had tingling numb sensation on my left shoulder for about a year on and off. I saw someone else say a doctor said it may be a precursor for shingles. I am 31, and actually came down with shingles on the same spot. I asked my doctor if they were related, but she knew nothing about shingles in a young person. If so it is stress related, try to take it easy.
