This was a year ago, but, I just had to say something! Whitestang86, you failed to mention how they wrote "emergincies" rather than "emergencies", and "hospitalzation" rather then "hospitalization". I'm sorry, that was really funny. Anyways, I have one of those little buggers (ingrown hairs), and it is driving me NUTS!!

Long but IMO some good advice?
First: To the med school dropout (most probably a CNA at a nursing home) stop giving medical advice that is way off base and I fear you may have prevented some people with question that needed immediate care not to ::bother:: ther ER! Many people believe they have an ingrown hair when it's actually a cyst and it is getting infected. If squeezing it and using sterile tweezers doesn't result in a hair coming out, don't keep trying to do it. I've had ingrown hairs that I "took care of" after trying and trying I ended up having to go to the ER because I had a HUGE egg shape bump that turned out to be so badly infected. I told the doctor that I felt stupid, etc. He assured me not to because it was so infected, it was spreading. I ended up with a huge hole that he had to pack and put in 2 stitches to hold it together. Didn't learn my lesson, happened again. Turned out it was a cyst that I was trying to dig into to find the hair that I just "knew" was there. My PCP sent me to the hospital (they have non emergency and emergency triage nurses evaluate you and put you where you belong) So please do not take advice from some interwebs "medical professional" who can't spell and does not have a clue how the ER is run. Getting an immediate appointment with a dermatologist was just not working out in my case (my doctors office made the calls on my behalf) Another big hole this time a lot of puss! The latest one I have now, I poked with for 5 minutes. No success, I gave up. I put antibacterial ointment on it and put on loose clothes. ALWAYS WEAR LOOSE CLOTHES AFTER YOU SHAVE THE BIKINI LINE! Also, shave in the direction that the hair is growing. Ya'll may know that already. I didn't! I was taught to go against it for a better result.
I see the dermatologist tomorrow and from all of my experiences with this (I am too ashamed to admit how many times I've forgotten the previous infections and gave it a whirl!) It actually feels like a mix of a cyst and an ingrown hair with a side of a bit of an infection.
If it hurts and looks really infected, try getting into a dermatologist ASAP. If the infection is making you concerned, go to the ER. They have specialists on call. NO to urgent care. They can't do anything for that, they aren't equipped to do the procedure. Most of their diagnosis' come from a central medical system look up (A medical Google, if you will, so it's hit or miss)
Hot compress using a moist, clean washcloth. 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. That tends to draw a head, then give popping a go. Non serious issues can turn extremely serious when you have an infection and you don't know it as a first timer.
I'll end this unintended novel with some SIMPLE TIPS:
No head on bump, hot, moist compress. 30 minutes on/off. Results in a head, use clean hands and tweezers in good light, go for it. Never dig or use sewing needles! Still nothing, antibacterial ointment (not cream) wear loose clothes. If it just starts to get larger and red/purple, get to a dermatologist before it gets serious. Not fear mongering, it can be really serious. If you see the red around it spreading at a good pace, get to the ER even if you have a few days to go until your appt. with the dermatologist. If you haven't made an appointment yet, go to the ER. Remember, there is tissue surrounding there, the infection will spread. They will have to (in some cases) remove surrounding tissue. Cosmetic yuck, healing and pain double.
I make no claims that I'm in the medical field, I make no claims that I'm not. Lessons I learned well before I became educated. So for you all young and old first timers with this, as my Gran would say "stop fussing with it and see someone!"
Good luck, be safe, be smart

you can't even spell absurd, hospitalization, stuff, emergencies, or put together a proper sentence. You sure seem like you have 8 years of higher education (plus residency) under your belt. BTW: Don't disagree with your message.

These people are not doctors. Nor am I. I just am in nursing school, and have a CNA license in the state of NY.
Most importantly, take care of yourself! and don't squeeze and pop until it's ready. You can cause the infection to travel, swell more and even get into your blood. Possible sepsis. You will know its ready when the "head" is clearly visible and starting to ooze a clearish, white fluid. Keeping hot packs on it will sped that process up.
