I have been dealing with the same thing for seven years now. The initial diagnosis was fibromyalgia because whenever I went to the doctor they never heard it pop. However I finally saw a rheumatologist several times and finally my symptoms were flared up at one of the appointments and he diagnosed me with costochondritis. It's basically the inflammation of the tissue between the ribs. I take a muscle relaxer her and anti-anxiety medicine for that as well as some other unrelated issues. I find the flare ups are fewer and further between when I am practicing some sort of deep breathing exercise like meditation or yoga. Depending on other people symptoms though it could also be precordial catch syndrome, where the pain is typically concentrated to between the left side of chest and sternum.

As far as the other posters go, I have never experienced a bubbling sensation that almost sounds like a collapsed long or that fluid is somehow getting somewhere it's not supposed to be?

I have had this same problem since in my 20's. I'm 52 now. I think you are right "Guest" about trapped air in the body cavity! To me there is no pop but it is extremely painful, hurts when I breath. It feels like a bubble and it does move around a bit. I've laid on my side, the opposite of the pain & eventually it moves out into the cavity from where it felt stuck and it disappears. It has gone on as long as several days or as short as several minutes to hours. THE doctors shrug their shoulders and say they've never heard of it and don't know what it could be. I've had a gallbladder removal which was done laproscopicly with tube going in the cavity. I believe an air bubble got trapped in there and it occasionally moves up and under my ribs towards my armpit. I'm sorry you have this too but am relieved I'm not the only one. I don't think there is anything that can be done about it but as I have aged it has gotten less frequent. This is the only explanation I have to explain this anomaly.

Just tried the arms above the head and it "popped" before I even fully extended. I got immediate relief of most of the nagging pain and for the first time all day, I'm feeling a bit of relief. My pain and popping is like all of you describe but it was brought on recently by trauma from falling and landing on my back on the arm of a chair. I don't know what's really going on. Emergency says it's muscle spasms but it feels much worse than that. Either way, thank you so much for the laying and stretching suggestion. It worked pretty well and I appreciate the relief.

I have this every once in a while but not nearly as painful I think it could be something called pCs. Precordial catch syndrome this link talks about it and it was exactly what I experienced

Omg I have been about to die with a similar thing. I can barely stand up straight and can only breathe in when seated or with my hands on the counter stretching upwards. The pain is unreal! I went to the chiropractor thinking it was a pinched nerve. I had an ex-ray at the ER. They found nothing. Blood work shows an infection so I was on antibiotics. I broke down and took a cellebrex last night and was ablle to finally get easy enough to sleep sitting upright in my lift recliner. I will start more doctor trips tomorrow.. Some friends mentioned pleurisy which part could be.. The horrible bubbling feeling right under my ribs is like an ice pick in under my lower right and left rib area.. I was praying outllouod last night for relief. I had my grandson here so I couldnt go to the ER but may later if it doesnt let up. Sneezing sends a sharp stabbing pain in the area right under my lower rib area as does coughing.. No fun!!
