I'm a 16 year old. I had ingrown toenail on my big toes and hammer toes on both of my 2nd toes. I had the surgery on my left foot a few months ago. I think it depends on who does your surgery on how it goes during and after. I had a bit of pain, but that's only because I had to walk a lot because I go to a school and they said my surgery didn't count to use the elevator. I am going to have the surgery for my right foot in a few weeks. I'm excited because I'm tired of this foot pain. But my answer is it depends on who does it. Hope that helps! :-)

Hello everyone, I had hammertoe surgery on all but my big toe on my left foot on 4/21/11.  I was told to stay off of my foot and not go to school for 1 week.  I went back to school the next morning.  The surgery last about 2 hours, as all 4 toes were shortened and permanent screws were placed in all 4 toes.  There was quite a bit of swelling and a little pain.  I kept it elevated as much as possible and was on crutches for the first 5 days.  I have been wearing the boot (for the most part) and only took the pain pills for the first 3 days.  I must say, everything seems to be coming along pretty good.  I had corns on the tops of the 2nd and 3rd toes, which unfortunately were not removed during surgery.  The incisions are healing well and the staples were removed on yesterday.  There is alot of scabbing on the tops of the toes from the staples, but it looks like most of the scarring will fade with time.  Other than the fact that I have no natural bend in the toe that I had previously, I am pretty satisfied.  Due to have the other foot done in 5 weeks.  Hope everything goes just as smoothly.

I had Hammer toe surgery on both feet.  Doctor says healing great and no problems (awesome) she took the stitches out and said i can bathe and do whatever.  That was 6/9/11 now today 6/11/11 as i was finishing showering the top layer of the stitch area looks like it started to open.  The bottom skin looks healthy but is this normal that the suture didn't close all the way?  I have been putting neosporin on the area, maybe i made it too moist?  I called the docotr but want to know if this is "normal" for this type of surgery

I am a healthy 30 year old female who recently had hammertoe surgery on the 4th and 5th toes of each foot at the same time. The pain pills made me so sick I was off them after the first week and the pain wasn't so bad. I went back to work within three weeks. My toes felt like two vienna sausages taped to my foot and a month and a half later still feel kind of foreign to me. There is still a lot of swelling (its been 2 months) but I am able to wear flip flops quite comfortably now for short walks. I am trying icing them tonight as they were pretty sore. All in all, I have good days and bad days, but not enough to make me want to take pills. Not even tylenol. At work I still wear the surgery shoes because I am on my feet most of the day in close quarters where my coworkers can accidentally step on me. My toes look great and I don't regret the down time for an instant! It is very helpful to elevate your feet at night when you sleep because if I don't, I wake up with swelling. And drink plenty of water. The feeling is slowly returning to my toes but they are still tender so I am very careful with them. I can't bend my toes for now but I can wiggle them a little bit. I had pins in them for two weeks and stitches. They still get a bit itchy at times so I put some rubbing alcohol between them and betadine on them daily to dry them out. At night, neosporin. The old skin is peeling off to reveal fresh beautiful toes. For the people who can't wet their feet: get in a dry tub with surgery shoes and put the feet up on the edges of the tub. A detatchable shower head makes it easier to wash yourself and your hair without getting your feet wet. A bit uncomfortable at first and hurts your back but worth it! I'll tell you how the icing goes. Also a physical therapist told me to soak them (when its fine to get them wet) in hot water then immediately ice them for 15 mins. I haven't tried it yet. Good luck.

This info is very helpful to me. I've read so much here after my toe surgery 3 months ago (2 toe bone spurs removed + tenotomy in one of the same toes - 2nd toe). Been worried, anxious and depressed as I expected to be fully normal like it never happened after 3 months. 2nd toe is still "thick/deep" looking and red w/burning and what I perceived as swelling. Still sore on bottom. Podiatrist appt. I had today - said toe is looking ok and that it doesn't seem too swollen. Your info posted here helps me realize it's not a swelling issue and I appreciate you giving a timeframe for normal "healing". I think every podiatric surgeon needs to emphasize what you posted, it will help ease a lot of people's minds and give more of a realistic expectation. Thank you again!!

FYI - my post is for DrSilver's post about it not being swelling but rather scar tissue that needs time to go away. 6 - 12 months. Most useful information i've found in 3 months about it.

Hi! I want to get my 2nd toes shortened and I was wondering how much it costs? and how come your insurance pays for it? its a cosmetic surgery so I thought insurance would not cover it. Thanks a lot for your help!

I presently am recovering from hammertoe surgery and bunion surgery. This is my third week of recovery. The first four days were very painful mostly out of it the day of a second day. Thank the lord for pain meds. I have a metal post in toe that had hammertoe till next week the stitchs came out 12days after surgery the hardest thing for me is walking on my heel. I must admit i had a screw put in too so my toe would not be too short. Your surgery may not be as bad. I have noy gone back to work since i drive an hr to work and still have to keep foot elevated. My dr. Warned me recovery is bad but i didn't think it eould be. Guess whT mine was.

I just had this surgery 2 weeks ago and i can honestly say i have had no pain at all. I take my prescribed meds and they gave me foot some sort of injection during surgery that numbed ny foot for about 16 hours. I have my foot all bandaged up and i have pins sticking out of the two toes that were straightened. I go in 2 days for xray and to see the surgeon again. I don't know what will be done but i do hope they put on a walking cast or something that will able me to ditch the crutches.I have been told i am off work for 8-12 weeks.

The surgery is painful just make sure you take pain med every 4 hrs. the worst part is in the morning i dont recomend sleeping with shoe on , big mistake.the way they tape it contributes to how much it hurts. Taking the pins out isnt as bad as you would think only one pin hurt.and try to take it easy put ice on for at least 3 days.Good luck

Hi there!

I am a twenty-two year old female who just recently got surgery on a hammertoe. The surgery was about a month ago and the healing process seemed to be going fine up until a week ago. The bandages had been taken out; the stitches were taken out ten days after the surgery, however the top of my toe is very sore and red in colour. I have been given instructions to continue to keep my foot elevated as much as possible and to do toe-exercises every day. However I don't know if these symptoms are common or if I should be concerned? Has anyone else who has had a similar surgery - joint removal - had continual swelling and redness occur?

I realize it takes a long time to fully heal and I am not rushing the recovery by any means. But from doing all of the instructional exercises and icing the foot, etc, what should be expected at just over a month recovery?

Hardly painful at all.
